    Modelling and Simulation of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems using Timed Rebeca

    In this paper we propose an extension of the Rebeca language that can be used to model distributed and asynchronous systems with timing constraints. We provide the formal semantics of the language using Structural Operational Semantics, and show its expressiveness by means of examples. We developed a tool for automated translation from timed Rebeca to the Erlang language, which provides a first implementation of timed Rebeca. We can use the tool to set the parameters of timed Rebeca models, which represent the environment and component variables, and use McErlang to run multiple simulations for different settings. Timed Rebeca restricts the modeller to a pure asynchronous actor-based paradigm, where the structure of the model represents the service oriented architecture, while the computational model matches the network infrastructure. Simulation is shown to be an effective analysis support, specially where model checking faces almost immediate state explosion in an asynchronous setting.Comment: In Proceedings FOCLASA 2011, arXiv:1107.584

    Mind the Gap – Passenger Arrival Patterns in Multi-agent Simulations

    In most studies mathematical models are developed finding the expected waiting time to be a function of the headway. These models have in common that the proportion of passengers that arrive randomly at a public transport stop is less as headway in-creases. Since there are several factors of influence, such as social demographic or regional aspects, the reliability of public transport service and the level of passenger information, the threshold headway for the transition from random to coordinated passenger arrivals vary from study to study. This study's objective is to investigate if an agent-based model exhibits realistic passenger arrival behavior at transit stops. This objective is approached by exploring the sensitivity of the agents' arrival behavior towards (1) the degree of learning, (2) the reliability of the experienced transit service, and (3) the service headway. The simulation experiments for a simple transit corridor indicate that the applied model is capable of representing the complex passenger arrival behavior observed in reality. (1) For higher degrees of learning, the agents tend to over-optimize, i.e. they try to obtain the latest possible departure time exact to the second. An approach is presented which increases the diversity in the agents' travel alternatives and results in a more realistic behavior. (2) For a less reliable service the agents' time adaptation changes in that a buffer time is added between their arrival at the stop and the actual departure of the vehicle. (3) For the modification of the headway the simulation outcome is consistent with the literature on arrival patterns. Smaller headways yield a more equally distributed arrival pattern whereas larger headways result in more coordinated arrival patterns

    Physical and neural entrainment to rhythm: human sensorimotor coordination across tasks and effector systems.

    The human sensorimotor system can be readily entrained to environmental rhythms, through multiple sensory modalities. In this review, we provide an overview of theories of timekeeping that make this neuroentrainment possible. First, we present recent evidence that contests the assumptions made in classic timekeeper models. The role of state estimation, sensory feedback and movement parameters on the organization of sensorimotor timing are discussed in the context of recent experiments that examined simultaneous timing and force control. This discussion is extended to the study of coordinated multi-effector movements and how they may be entrained

    Representing Conversations for Scalable Overhearing

    Open distributed multi-agent systems are gaining interest in the academic community and in industry. In such open settings, agents are often coordinated using standardized agent conversation protocols. The representation of such protocols (for analysis, validation, monitoring, etc) is an important aspect of multi-agent applications. Recently, Petri nets have been shown to be an interesting approach to such representation, and radically different approaches using Petri nets have been proposed. However, their relative strengths and weaknesses have not been examined. Moreover, their scalability and suitability for different tasks have not been addressed. This paper addresses both these challenges. First, we analyze existing Petri net representations in terms of their scalability and appropriateness for overhearing, an important task in monitoring open multi-agent systems. Then, building on the insights gained, we introduce a novel representation using Colored Petri nets that explicitly represent legal joint conversation states and messages. This representation approach offers significant improvements in scalability and is particularly suitable for overhearing. Furthermore, we show that this new representation offers a comprehensive coverage of all conversation features of FIPA conversation standards. We also present a procedure for transforming AUML conversation protocol diagrams (a standard human-readable representation), to our Colored Petri net representation

    Development of a Multi-agent Collision Resolution System at the Supply of Spare Parts and Components to the Production Equipment of Industrial Enterprises

    The approach to the creation of computer facilities for the automation of the technical maintenance of production equipment (TMPE) at industrial enterprises (IE) is outlined. Meaningful and formal statement of the problem of forming solutions for identifying and eliminating collisions that arise when delivering spare parts and components for TMPE are presented. The method of formation of coordinating decisions on maintenance with spare parts and accessories for carrying out TMPE at IE is described. The organization of intellectual support of formation of coordinating decisions by recognition of potential collision in the TMPE process is offered. This procedure involves checking the real existence of the collision and issuing a coordinating decision. In this case, the decision is formed in the event of a disagreement between the need for spare parts and components for the TMPE maintenance, with their availability in the PP warehouse. The ways of software implementation of this method in the environment of multi-agent system are considered. In particular, the description of the multi-agent system developed during the prototype research is given. The prototype is implemented using CORBA technology, in accordance with DSTU ISO/ EC 2382-15:2005. The calculation of the efficiency of the application of the developed computer tools in production is shown.     Neurofuzzy control to address stochastic variation in actuated-coordinated systems at closely-spaced intersections

    This dissertation documents a method of addressing stochastic variation at closely-spaced signalized intersections using neurofuzzy control. Developed on the conventional actuated-coordinated control system, the neurofuzzy traffic signal control keeps the advantage of the conventional control system. Beyond this, the neurofuzzy signal control coordinates the coordinated phase with one of the non-coordinated phases with no reduction of the green band assigned to the coordination along the arterial, reduces variations of traffic signal times in the cycle caused by early return to green , hence, makes more sufficient utilization of green time at closely-spaced intersections. The neurofuzzy signal control system manages a non-coordinated movement in order to manage queue spillbacks and variations of signal timings.Specifically, the neurofuzzy controller establishes a secondary coordination between the upstream coordinated phase (through phase) and the downstream non-coordinated phase (left turn phase) based on real-time traffic demand. Under the fuzzy logic signal control, the traffic from the upstream intersection can arrive and join the queue at the downstream left turn lane and be served, and hence, less possibly be blocked on the downstream left turn lane. This secondary coordination favors left turn progression and, hence, reduces the queue spillbacks. The fuzzy logic method overcomes the natural disadvantage of currently widely used actuated-coordinated traffic signal control in that the fuzzy logic method could coordinate a coordinated movement with a non-coordinated movement. The experiment was conducted and evaluated using a simulation model created using the microscopic simulation program - VISSIM.The neurofuzzy control algorithm was coded with MATLAB which interacts with the traffic simulation model via VISSIM\u27s COM interface. The membership functions in the neurofuzzy signal control system were calibrated using reinforcement learning to further the performance. Comparisons were made between the trained neurofuzzy control, the untrained neurofuzzy control, and the conventional actuated-coordinated control under five different traffic volumes. The simulation results indicated that the trained neurofuzzy signal control outperformed the other two for each traffic case. Comparing to the conventional actuated-coordinated control, the trained neurofuzzy signal control reduced the average delay by 7% and the average number of stops by 6% under the original traffic volume; as traffic volume increasing to 120%, the reductions doubled
