    1991 to 2019: The rise of machine interpreting research

    Concebido como um estudo cienciométrico, este artigo procura compreender o estado da investigação sobre interpretação automática na base de dados IEEE de 1991 a 2019. Os documentos foram analisados considerando uma série de medições como as instituições e países mais proeminentes que investigam a interpretação automática, citação, co-autoria, co-ocorrência de palavras-chave, acoplamento bibliográfico e análise baseada em textos recuperados dos títulos e resumos dos documentos. Através do software VOSviewer e de suas ferramentas de coleta e visualização de dados, a pesquisa sobre interpretação automática no corpus analisado centra-se em três aspectos principais: tecnologias de tradução automática, síntese de voz e língua japonesa.Conceived as a scientometric study, this paper searches for understanding the research status of machine interpreting on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) database from 1991 to 2019. Documents were analyzed considering a series of measures such as most prominent academic institutions and countries that investigate machine interpreting, citation, co-authorship, keywords co-occurrence, reference coupling, and textual-based analysis retrieved from the documents’ titles and abstracts. Through VOSviewer software and its tools for data collecting and visualization, machine interpreting research in the analyzed corpus focuses on three main concerns: machine translation, speech synthesis, and Japanese language

    Trialing project-based learning in a new EAP ESP course: A collaborative reflective practice of three college English teachers

    Currently in many Chinese universities, the traditional College English course is facing the risk of being ‘marginalized’, replaced or even removed, and many hours previously allocated to the course are now being taken by EAP or ESP. At X University in northern China, a curriculum reform as such is taking place, as a result of which a new course has been created called ‘xue ke’ English. Despite the fact that ‘xue ke’ means subject literally, the course designer has made it clear that subject content is not the target, nor is the course the same as EAP or ESP. This curriculum initiative, while possibly having been justified with a rationale of some kind (e.g. to meet with changing social and/or academic needs of students and/or institutions), this is posing a great challenge for, as well as considerable pressure on, a number of College English teachers who have taught this single course for almost their entire teaching career. In such a context, three teachers formed a peer support group in Semester One this year, to work collaboratively co-tackling the challenge, and they chose Project-Based Learning (PBL) for the new course. This presentation will report on the implementation of this project, including the overall designing, operational procedure, and the teachers’ reflections. Based on discussion, pre-agreement was reached on the purpose and manner of collaboration as offering peer support for more effective teaching and learning and fulfilling and pleasant professional development. A WeChat group was set up as the chief platform for messaging, idea-sharing, and resource-exchanging. Physical meetings were supplementary, with sound agenda but flexible time, and venues. Mosoteach cloud class (lan mo yun ban ke) was established as a tool for virtual learning, employed both in and after class. Discussions were held at the beginning of the semester which determined only brief outlines for PBL implementation and allowed space for everyone to autonomously explore in their own way. Constant further discussions followed, which generated a great deal of opportunities for peer learning and lesson plan modifications. A reflective journal, in a greater or lesser detailed manner, was also kept by each teacher to record the journey of the collaboration. At the end of the semester, it was commonly recognized that, although challenges existed, the collaboration was overall a success and they were all willing to continue with it and endeavor to refine it to be a more professional and productive approach

    Examining the Trend of Literature on Classification Modelling: A Bibliometric Approach

    This paper analyses and reports various types of published works related to classification or discriminant modelling. This paper adopted a bibliometric analysis based on the data obtained from the Scopus online database on 27th July 2019. Based on the ‘keywords’ search results, it yielded 2775 valid documents for further analysis. For data visualisation purposes, we employed VOSviewer. This paper reports the results using standard bibliometric indicators, particularly on the growth rate of publications, research productivity, analysis of the authors and citations. The outcomes revealed that there is an increased growth rate of classification literature over the years since 1968. A total of 2473 (89.12%) documents were from journals (n=1439; 51.86%) and conference proceedings (n=1034; 37.26%) contributed as the top publications in this classification topic. Meanwhile, 2578 (92.9%) documents are multi-authored with an average collaboration index of 3.34 authors per article. However, this classification research field found that the famous numbers of authors’ collaboration in a document are two (with n=758; 27.32%), three (n=752; 27.10%) and four (n=560; 20.18%) respectively. An analysis by country, China with 1146 (41.30%) published documents thus is ranked first in productivity. With respect to the frequency of citations, Bauer and Kohavi (1999)’s article emerged as the most cited article through 1414 total citations with an average of 70.7 citations per year. Overall, the increasing number of works on classification topics indicates a growing awareness of its importance and specific requirements in this research field

    Purpose – Evaluate the various academic researches with multiple views on credit risk and artificial intelligence (AI) and their evolution.Theoretical framework – The study is divided as follows: Section 1 introduces the article. Section 2 deals with credit risk and its relationship with computational models and techniques. Section 3 presents the methodology. Section 4 addresses a discussion of the results and challenges on the topic. Finally, section 5 presents the conclusions.Design/methodology/approach – A systematic review of the literature was carried out without defining the time period and using the Web of Science and Scopus database.Findings – The application of computational technology in the scope of credit risk analysis has drawn attention in a unique way. It was found that the demand for identification and introduction of new variables, classifiers and more assertive methods is constant. The effort to improve the interpretation of data and models is intense.Research, Practical & Social implications – It contributes to the verification of the theory, providing information in relation to the most used methods and techniques, it brings a wide analysis to deepen the knowledge of the factors and variables on the theme. It categorizes the lines of research and provides a summary of the literature, which serves as a reference, in addition to suggesting future research.Originality/value – Research in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is recent and requires attention and investigation, thus, this study contributes to the opening of new views in order to deepen the work on this topic

    Lean Cooperation: A Framework

    While both concepts lean management and cooperation not only have received considerable attention in management literature but also have been combined e.g. in the field of supply chain literature, a comprehensive definition of lean cooperation is still missing. Whereas lean supply chain cooperation is only one aspect in a growing field, we aim at considering further forms of cooperation coming up and having consequences for the management of lean initiatives.Based on an extensive literature review, we develop a framework addressing lean cooperation and thus, allowing for systematization. Furthermore we find out that current literature mainly focusses on leancooperation along the supply chain. This paper presents other forms of cooperation focused on lean management. With a case study of lean cooperation within an industry cluster we will show the potential of knowledge-transfer on lean practices for individual firm´s  implementation.This paper provides a definition and a research framework for lean cooperation. Insights will be useful for further analysis of lean management roll-out within outlined forms of cooperation. Practitionerswill learn about benefits and restrictions of lean cooperation. The paper also is of value for researchers giving a structured outline of lean cooperation and stating fields for further research

    The selfish signifier: meaning, virulence and transmissibility in a management fashion

    Purpose. Management fashions can be, and have been, conceptualized as narrative elements competing for replication and resources in the wider managerial discourse. Most wax and wane through a life cycle. Some achieve an extended place and even a transition to quasi permanent institutions. Facilities / Facility Management (FM) is one such example. Design/methodology/approach. The case draws FM’s history since 1968 and asks whether it is compatible with recent and classic (Darwin 1871) thoughts on cultural evolution as a selection process between competing discourses. Findings. Several properties of that history are argued as compatible with the theoretical stance taken particularly the mutation of the syntactic content to suit local circumstances and the dilution of the term’s intent. Success attributes in the selective competition include contingency, securing an organizational home and mutability (what was represented became, more operational, less virulent but in the process more transmissible). In spreading globally the signifier / meme FM also proved mutatable to local managerial discourses. Originality/value The study supports a developing paradigm that it is possible to view organizations as ecologies of variously, memes, signifiers, narratives, representations or discourses. All five terms are shown to have been used to make similar significations by different authors. It shows how a natural history of narrative memes can be constructed
