Sticker Chat is one form of communication tools in the social media. There are a variety of characters, including human and non-human. This study aims to investigate the signs and meanings contained in the character of the sticker chat. In this case, Flower Hijab sticker chat edition is used as the object of the research. The research is conducted by describing the components in the sticker, such as the character and identity, costumes used, color, visual style, expressions and gestures, as well as an overview of activities undertaken by the characters. The second analysis is conducted by interpreting the meaning contained in a few of the stickers by using structuralism semiotics. The results of the interpretation suggest that the sticker chat Flower Hijab is a representation of modern Muslim teenagers who live in the urban society, between two different axes: the axis of the sacred and of the profane. These two axes appear due to the influences of two different flows: tradition and modern culture. Internet Dwelling, Cyborgs, and the Matrix of Modernity: An Empirical Inquiry with Critical-Hermeneutic Features

    Get PDF
Amidst modernity\u27s expanding electronic social matrix, this cultural-historical inquiry explores the technological construction of human being (e.g., cyborgs) and sociality in the America Online cyberscape. A two-tiered critical-hermeneutic method enables exploration of the broad rationalizing historical narrative and the localized play of virtual discursive practices impacting human meaning construction, selfhood, and social practice. A third and fourth tier of inquiry occasions integration of psychological meanings found in research participant experiential descriptions and interviews. This four-tier interplay reveals a bodily ethic enabling participants to modify subjectifying Internet practices toward meaningful social ends. Otherwise, eclipsed interpretive bodily powers contribute to undecidability about meaning constructions and identities. Despite multiple identity solicitations, normalization of objectified and schizoid being, and panoptic e-surveillance, participants pursued genuine and personally satisfying encounters

Unmet goals of tracking: within-track heterogeneity of students' expectations for

Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If students’ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in student’s expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality

The afterlife of industrialization: flows and transformations in Kyrgyzstan

This dissertation examines layered transformations in a town in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, as it has experienced the process of industrial restructuring and social change since the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. Through the lens of six critical events—the collapse of the Soviet order, significant infrastructure changes, delineation of new territorial borders, Islamization and the emergence of new media technologies—this study traces the transformative dynamics in the town’s post-industrial, post-Soviet development. More concretely, I examine a kaleidoscope of inter-related themes in Shamaldy-Sai, a locality that was a ‘high-socialist’ community constructing socialism in the thrall of utopian visions (Thrift 2004, Schwenkel 2020). The research objective is to examine how local communities have responded to major post-Soviet transformations and the ongoing flows of ideas, practices, and information that confront them. A small town, Shamaldy-Sai represents not only a deindustrialized periphery but is also a border town nestled on the transboundary Naryn River, itself the site of a ‘cascade’ of strategic hydropower plants. It is the place where the project of Soviet modernity unfolded in the 1950s and 1970s, promising a stable future — one in which, since the 1990s, after the collapse of industry and the Soviet regime, local communities have been left disoriented
