    Time-optimality by distance-optimality for parabolic control systems

    The equivalence of time-optimal and distance-optimal control problems is shown for a class of parabolic control systems. Based on this equivalence, an approach for the efficient algorithmic solution of time-optimal control problems is investigated.     This thesis explores various computational aspects of solving nonlinear, continuous-time dynamic optimization problems (DOPs) numerically. Firstly, a direct transcription method for solving DOPs is proposed, named the integrated residual method (IRM). Instead of forcing the dynamic constraints to be satisfied only at a selected number of points as in direct collocation, this new approach alternates between minimizing and constraining the squared norm of the dynamic constraint residuals integrated along the whole solution trajectories. The method is capable of obtaining solutions of higher accuracy for the same mesh compared to direct collocation methods, enabling a flexible trade-off between solution accuracy and optimality, and providing reliable solutions for challenging problems, including those with singular arcs and high-index differential-algebraic equations. A number of techniques have also been proposed in this work for efficient numerical solution of large scale and challenging DOPs. A general approach for direct implementation of rate constraints on the discretization mesh is proposed. Unlike conventional approaches that may lead to singular control arcs, the solution of this on-mesh implementation has better numerical properties, while achieving computational speedups. Another development is related to the handling of inactive constraints, which do not contribute to the solution of DOPs, but increase the problem size and burden the numerical computations. A strategy to systematically remove the inactive and redundant constraints under a mesh refinement framework is proposed. The last part of this work focuses on the use of DOPs in aerospace applications, with a number of topics studied. Using example scenarios of intercontinental flights, the benefits of formulating DOPs directly according to problem specifications are demonstrated, with notable savings in fuel usage. The numerical challenges with direct collocation are also identified, with the IRM obtaining solutions of higher accuracy, and at the same time suppressing the singular arc fluctuations.Open Acces

    A convex analysis approach to optimal controls with switching structure for partial differential equations

    Optimal control problems involving hybrid binary-continuous control costs are challenging due to their lack of convexity and weak lower semicontinuity. Replacing such costs with their convex relaxation leads to a primal-dual optimality system that allows an explicit pointwise characterization and whose Moreau-Yosida regularization is amenable to a semismooth Newton method in function space. This approach is especially suited for computing switching controls for partial differential equations. In this case, the optimality gap between the original functional and its relaxation can be estimated and shown to be zero for controls with switching structure. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of this approach

    Error estimates for the approximation of the velocity tracking problem with Bang-Bang controls

    The velocity tracking problem for the evolutionary Navier–Stokes equations in 2d is studied. The controls are of distributed type but the cost functional does not involve the usual quadratic term for the control. As a consequence the resulting controls can be of bang-bang type. First and second order necessary and suïŹƒcient conditions are proved. A fully-discrete scheme based on discontinuous (in time) Galerkin approach combined with conforming ïŹnite element subspaces in space, is proposed and analyzed.     Second order optimality conditions and their role in PDE control

    If f : Rn R is twice continuously differentiable, f’(u) = 0 and f’’(u) is positive definite, then u is a local minimizer of f. This paper surveys the extension of this well known second order suffcient optimality condition to the case f : U R, where U is an infinite-dimensional linear normed space. The reader will be guided from the case of finite-dimensions via a brief discussion of the calculus of variations and the optimal control of ordinary differential equations to the control of nonlinear partial differential equations, where U is a function space. In particular, the following questions will be addressed: Is the extension to infinite dimensions straightforward or will unexpected difficulties occur? How second order sufficient optimality conditions must be modified, if simple inequality constraints are imposed on u? Why do we need second order conditions and how can they be applied? If they are important, are we able to check if they are fulfilled order sufficient optimality condition to the case f : U R, where U is an infinite-dimensional linear normed space. If they are important, are we able to check if they are fulfilled? It turns out that infinite dimensions cause new difficulties that do not occur in finite dimensions. We will be faced with the surprising fact that the space, where f’’(u) exists can be useless to ensure positive definiteness of the quadratic form v f’’(u)v2. In this context, the famous two-norm discrepancy, its consequences, and techniques for overcoming this difficulty are explained. To keep the presentation simple, the theory is developed for problems in function spaces with simple box constraints of the form a = u = ß. The theory of second order conditions in the control of partial differential equations is presented exemplarily for the nonlinear heat equation. Different types of critical cones are introduced, where the positivity of f’’(u) must be required. Their form depends on whether a so-called Tikhonov regularization term is part of the functional f or not. In this context, the paper contains also new results that lead to quadratic growth conditions in the strong sense. As a first application of second-order sufficient conditions, the stability of optimal solutions with respect to perturbations of the data of the control problem is discussed. Second, their use in analyzing the discretization of control problems by finite elements is studied.     Minimum-lap-time optimisation and simulation

    The paper begins with a survey of advances in state-of-the-art minimum-time simulation for road vehicles. The techniques covered include both quasi-steady-state and transient vehicle models, which are combined with trajectories that are either pre-assigned or free to be optimised. The fundamentals of nonlinear optimal control are summarised. These fundamentals are the basis of most of the vehicular optimal control methodologies and solution procedures reported in the literature. The key features of three-dimensional road modelling, vehicle positioning and vehicle modelling are also summarised with a focus on recent developments. Both cars and motorcycles are considered

    On the solution stability of parabolic optimal control problems

    The paper investigates stability properties of solutions of optimal control problems for semilinear parabolic partial differential equations. H\"older or Lipschitz dependence of the optimal solution on perturbations are obtained for problems in which the equation and the objective functional are affine with respect to the control. The perturbations may appear in both the equation and in the objective functional and may non-linearly depend on the state and control variables. The main results are based on an extension of recently introduced assumptions on the joint growth of the first and second variation of the objective functional. The stability of the optimal solution is obtained as a consequence of a more general result obtained in the paper -- the proved metric subregularity of the mapping associated with the system of first-order necessary optimality conditions. This property also enables error estimates for approximation methods. Lipschitz estimate for the dependence of the optimal control on the Tikhonov regularization parameter is obtained as a by-product
