    Portable random number generators

    Computers are deterministic devices, and a computer-generated random number is a contradiction in terms. As a result, computer-generated pseudorandom numbers are fraught with peril for the unwary. We summarize much that is known about the most well-known pseudorandom number generators: congruential generators. We also provide machine-independent programs to implement the generators in any language that has 32-bit signed integers-for example C, C++, and FORTRAN.     Modal logics on rational Kripke structures

    This dissertation is a contribution to the study of infinite graphs which can be presented in a finitary way. In particular, the class of rational graphs is studied. The vertices of a rational graph are labeled by a regular language in some finite alphabet and the set of edges of a rational graph is a rational relation on that language. While the first-order logics of these graphs are generally not decidable, the basic modal and tense logics are. A survey on the class of rational graphs is done, whereafter rational Kripke models are studied. These models have rational graphs as underlying frames and are equipped with rational valuations. A rational valuation assigns a regular language to each propositional variable. I investigate modal languages with decidable model checking on rational Kripke models. This leads me to consider regularity preserving relations to see if the class can be generalised even further. Then the concept of a graph being rationally presentable is examined - this is analogous to a graph being automatically presentable. Furthermore, some model theoretic properties of rational Kripke models are examined. In particular, bisimulation equivalences between rational Kripke models are studied. I study three subclasses of rational Kripke models. I give a summary of the results that have been obtained for these classes, look at examples (and non-examples in the case of automatic Kripke frames) and of particular interest is finding extensions of the basic tense logic with decidable model checking on these subclasses. An extension of rational Kripke models is considered next: omega-rational Kripke models. Some of their properties are examined, and again I am particularly interested in finding modal languages with decidable model checking on these classes. Finally I discuss some applications, for example bounded model checking on rational Kripke models, and mention possible directions for further research

    It's the age-old recurrence with a twist: sum the last two terms and if the result is composite, divide by its smallest prime divisor to get the next term (e.g., 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 3, 7, ...). These sequences exhibit pseudo-random behaviour and generally terminate in a handful of cycles, properties reminiscent of 3x+1 and related sequences. The consumer can now benefit from hardware and software which was considered state-of-the-art several years ago. The advantages offered by the digital technologies are major but the same digital technology opens the door for unlimited piracy. Copying an analogue VCR tape was certainly possible and relatively easy, in spite of various forms of protection, but due to the analogue environment, the subsequent copies had an inherent loss in quality. This was a natural way of limiting the multiple copying of a video material. With digital technology, this barrier disappears, being possible to make as many copies as desired, without any loss in quality whatsoever. Digital watermarking is one of the best available tools for fighting this threat. The aim of the present work was to develop a digital watermarking system compliant with the recommendations drawn by the EBU, for video broadcast monitoring. Since the watermark can be inserted in either spatial domain or transform domain, this aspect was investigated and led to the conclusion that wavelet transform is one of the best solutions available. Since watermarking is not an easy task, especially considering the robustness under various attacks several techniques were employed in order to increase the capacity/robustness of the system: spread-spectrum and modulation techniques to cast the watermark, powerful error correction to protect the mark, human visual models to insert a robust mark and to ensure its invisibility. The combination of these methods led to a major improvement, but yet the system wasn't robust to several important geometrical attacks. In order to achieve this last milestone, the system uses two distinct watermarks: a spatial domain reference watermark and the main watermark embedded in the wavelet domain. By using this reference watermark and techniques specific to image registration, the system is able to determine the parameters of the attack and revert it. Once the attack was reverted, the main watermark is recovered. The final result is a high capacity, blind DWr-based video watermarking system, robust to a wide range of attacks.BBC Research & Developmen

    A Contribution to Metric Diophantine Approximation : the Lebesgue and Hausdorff Theories

    This thesis is concerned with the theory of Diophantine approximation from the point of view of measure theory. After the prolegomena which conclude with a number of conjectures set to understand better the distribution of rational points on algebraic planar curves, Chapter 1 provides an extension of the celebrated Theorem of Duffin and Schaeffer. This enables one to set a generalized version of the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture. Chapter 2 deals with the topic of simultaneous approximation on manifolds, more precisely on polynomial curves. The aim is to develop a theory of approximation in the so far unstudied case when such curves are not defined by integer polynomials. A new concept of so–called “liminf sets” is then introduced in Chapters 3 and 4 in the framework of simultaneous approximation of independent quantities. In short, in this type of problem, one prescribes the set of integers which the denominators of all the possible rational approximants of a given vector have to belong to. Finally, a reasonably complete theory of the approximation of an irrational by rational fractions whose numerators and denominators lie in prescribed arithmetic progressions is developed in chapter 5. This provides the first example of a Khintchine type result in the context of so–called uniform approximation

    Simulation based Bayesian econometric inference: principles and some recent computational advances

    In this paper we discuss several aspects of simulation based Bayesian econometric inference. We start at an elementary level on basic concepts of Bayesian analysis; evaluating integrals by simulation methods is a crucial ingredient in Bayesian inference. Next, the most popular and well-known simulation techniques are discussed, the MetropolisHastings algorithm and Gibbs sampling (being the most popular Markov chain Monte Carlo methods) and importance sampling. After that, we discuss two recently developed sampling methods: adaptive radial based direction sampling [ARDS], which makes use of a transformation to radial coordinates, and neural network sampling, which makes use of a neural network approximation to the posterior distribution of interest. Both methods are especially useful in cases where the posterior distribution is not well-behaved, in the sense of having highly non-elliptical shapes. The simulation techniques are illustrated in several example models, such as a model for the real US GNP and models for binary data of a US recession indicator.
