This paper describes an intelligent component database system that delivers components to synthesis tools when given a set of attributes and constraints. Requirements of a component server are defined and an implementation is described. Our experiments demonstrate that such a component sever can replace component libraries and component catalogs with hundreds of pages

Constant-time cost evaluation for behavioral partitioning
Given a system behavioral specification, partitioning can be used to distribute among chips the processes, procedures, and storage elements that comprise the specification. We introduce a technique for constant-time recomputation of pin, area, and execution-time estimates for a behavioral partitioning move. The technique permits fast, accurate estimations of a large number of partitionings, thus enabling better results than approaches which attain tractable computation time by using gross estimates or less thorough partitioning algorithms. The key to our technique is the isolation and extraction before partitioning of the basic design attributes needed for estimation, and the updating of this information in constant-time for each move. The estimation models are almost as detailed as those presented in previous estimation approaches not intended for constant-time update. The results we provide indicate the speed and practicality of our estimation approach in conjunction with sophisticated partitioning algorithms

Back-annotation for interactive data path synthesis
In order to take into account physical design effects, a designer needs a feedback mechanism during interactive data path synthesis. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph model and a back-annotation algorithm which provide a feedback mechanism for back-annotation from physical designs to behavioral descriptions. Given a control data flow graph and its structural design, this back-annotation technique cannot only evaluate the design quality but can also feedback the delay to each edge and node in the graph. Therefore, a designer can identify the critical paths and improve the design. The hypergraph model and the back-annotation algorithm allow us to bridge the gap between the behavioral description and the physical design

Layout area models for high-level synthesis
Traditionally, the common cost functions, the number of functional units, registers and selector inputs, are used in high level synthesis as quality measures. However, these traditional design quality measures may not reflect the real physical design. To establish quality measures based on the physical designs, we propose layout estimation models for two commonly used data path and control layout architectures. The results show that quality measures deriving from our models give an accurate prediction of the final layout. The results also show that traditional cost functions are not good indicators for optimization in high level synthesis
Low power techniques for video compression
This paper gives an overview of low-power techniques proposed in the literature for mobile multimedia and Internet applications. Exploitable aspects are discussed in the behavior of different video compression tools. These power-efficient solutions are then classified by synthesis domain and level of abstraction. As this paper is meant to be a starting point for further research in the area, a lowpower hardware & software co-design methodology is outlined in the end as a possible scenario for video-codec-on-a-chip implementations on future mobile multimedia platforms
Job Security and Work Absence: Evidence form a Natural Experiment
We analyze the consequences for sickness absence of a selective softening of job security legislation for small firms in Sweden in 2001. According to our differences-in-difference estimates, aggregate absence in these firms fell by 0.2-0.3 days per year. This aggregate net figure hides important effects on different groups of employees. Workers remaining in the reform firms after the reform reduced their absence by about one day. People with a high absence record tended to leave reform firms, but these firms also became less reluctant to hire people with a record of high absence.Seniority rules; sick pay insurance; firing costs; moral hazard
The role of the reference alternative in the specification of asymmetric discrete choice models
Within the discrete choice modelling literature, there has been growing interest in including reference alternatives within stated choice survey tasks. Recent studies have investigated asymmetric utility specifications by estimating discrete choice models that include different parameters according to gains and losses relative to the values of the reference attributes. This paper analyses asymmetric discrete choice models by comparing specifications expressed as deviations from the reference point and specifications expressed in absolute values. The results suggest that the selection of the appropriate asymmetric model specification should be based on the type of the stated choice experiment.stated choice experiments, reference alternative, preference asymmetry, willingness to pay
Taxes, Wages and Working Hours
This paper presents estimates of individuals' responses in hourly wages to changes in marginal tax rates. Estimates based on register panel data of Swedish households covering the period 1992 to 2007 produce significant but relatively small net-of-tax rate elasticities. The results vary with family type, with the largest elasticities obtained for single males and the smallest for married/cohabitant females. Despite these seemingly small elasticities, evaluation of the effects of a reduced state tax using a microsimulation model shows that the effort effect matters. The largest effect is due to changes in number of working hours yet including the effort effect results in an almost self-financed reform. As a reference to the earlier literature we also estimate taxable income elasticities. As expected, these are larger than for the hourly wage rates.
