    Re-targetable tools and methodologies for the efficient deployment of high-level source code on coarse-grained dynamically reconfigurable architectures

    Reconfigurable computing traditionally consists of a data path machine (such as an FPGA) acting as a co-processor to a conventional microprocessor. This involves partitioning the application such that the data path intensive parts are implemented on the reconfigurable fabric, and the control flow intensive parts are implemented on the microprocessor. Often the two parts have to be written in different languages. New highly parallel data path architectures allow parallelism approaching that of FPGAs, but are able to be reconfigured very rapidly. As a result, it is possible to use these architectures to perform control flow in a manner similar to a microprocessor, and thus a complete program can be described from an unmodified high-level language (in particular C). This overcomes the historical instruction-level parallelism (ILP) wall.To make full use of the available parallelism , existing microprocessor tool flows are insufficient. Data path machines are typically programmed via HDL tools from the ASIC design world. This expresses algorithm s at a low er level than the application algorithm s are typically developed in. The work in this thesis builds upon earlier work to allow applications to be described from high-level languages, by employing low-level optimisations in the compiler back-end and working from the assembly, to maximise parallel efficiency. This consists of scheduling, where known techniques are used to pack instructions into basic blocks that map well to the reconfigurable core (optimising spatial efficiency); then automatic pipelining is applied to dramatically improve the achievable throughput (optimising temporal efficiency). Together these can be thought of as “instruction-level parallelism done right”. Speed-ups of more than an order of magnitude were achieved, yielding throughputs of 180-380M Pixels/s on typical image signal processing tasks, matching the performance of hard-wired ASICs.Furthermore, conventional software-based simulation technologies for data path machines are too slow for use in application verification. This thesis demonstrates how a high-speed software emulator can be created for self-controlled dynamically reconfigurable data path machines, using a static serialisation of the data paths in each configuration context. This yields run-time performance several orders of magnitude higher than existing techniques, making it suitable for use in feedback-directed optimisation

    The research summarized was concerned with the design of testbed and emulation tools suitable to assist in projecting, with reasonable accuracy, the expected performance of highly concurrent computing systems on large, complete applications. Such testbed and emulation tools are intended for the eventual use of those exploring new concurrent system architectures and organizations, either as users or as designers of such systems. While a range of alternatives was considered, a software based set of hierarchical tools was chosen to provide maximum flexibility, to ease in moving to new computers as technology improves and to take advantage of the inherent reliability and availability of commercially available computing systems

    The automated compilation of comprehensive hardware design search spaces of algorithmic-based implementations for FPGA design exploration

    Over the past few years FPGA hardware has become a logical choice for implementing cutting-edge signal processing applications. While there have been advances in FPGA technology, the common process of creating specialized hardware implementations for them is a manual one involving extensive design exploration. Design exploration is a process that requires a designer to look for designs that ¯t a set of performance characteristics such as size, throughput, or power depending on the application and it can be the most time consuming step when creating FPGA hardware. This process is a nontrivial task that requires extensive background knowledgeof both FPGA hardware and the application being implemented. While advances have been made in automating the process of design, there is still a gap between the application writers and hardware engineers that can be filled.This thesis presents a novel approach for automating the generation of hardware design search spaces that contain a comprehensive set of ways to implement signal processing algorithms with FPGAs. To accomplish this we generate a set of equivalent mathematical representations for an input equation via a novel declarative programming language that avoids a number of di±culties associated with the imperative languages used by previous approaches. We show that this equation space is bounded in terms of bracketing and ordering of mathematical operations, and that by changing the way an equation is written we can generate unique hardware instantiations (designs). The generated instantiations are mapped to heterogeneous computing architectures and written in a structural hardware descriptive language style to ensure that the intended instantiation will behave as predicted in hardware.A software system was created based on this approach that generates an equation space for varying numbers of summed multiplications and converts each representation into a comprehensive hardware design search space that can be analyzed for performance characteristics such as size, throughput, latency, and power.Ph.D., Electrical Engineering -- Drexel University, 200

    The trade-offs between the use of modern high-level and low-level programming languages in constructing complex software artifacts are well known. High-level languages allow for greater programmer productivity: abstraction and genericity allow for the same functionality to be implemented with significantly less code compared to low-level languages. Modularity, object-orientation, functional programming, and powerful type systems allow programmers not only to create clean abstractions and protect them from leaking, but also to define code units that are reusable and easily composable, and software architectures that are adaptable and extensible. The abstraction, succinctness, and modularity of high-level code help to avoid software bugs and facilitate debugging and maintenance. The use of high-level languages comes at a performance cost: increased indirection due to abstraction, virtualization, and interpretation, and superfluous work, particularly in the form of tempory memory allocation and deallocation to support objects and encapsulation. As a result of this, the cost of high-level languages for performance-critical systems may seem prohibitive. The vision of abstraction without regret argues that it is possible to use high-level languages for building performance-critical systems that allow for both productivity and high performance, instead of trading off the former for the latter. In this thesis, we realize this vision for building different types of data analytics systems. Our means of achieving this is by employing compilation.     Towards Comprehensive Parametric Code Generation Targeting Graphics Processing Units in Support of Scientific Computation

    The most popular multithreaded languages based on the fork-join concurrency model (CIlkPlus, OpenMP) are currently being extended to support other forms of parallelism (vectorization, pipelining and single-instruction-multiple-data (SIMD)). In the SIMD case, the objective is to execute the corresponding code on a many-core device, like a GPGPU, for which the CUDA language is a natural choice. Since the programming concepts of CilkPlus and OpenMP are very different from those of CUDA, it is desirable to automatically generate optimized CUDA-like code from CilkPlus or OpenMP. In this thesis, we propose an accelerator model for annotated C/C++ code together with an implementation that allows the automatic generation of CUDA code. One of the key features of this CUDA code generator is that it supports the generation of CUDA kernel code where program parameters (like number of threads per block) and machine parameters (like shared memory size) are treated as unknown symbols. Hence, these parameters need not to be known at code-generation-time: machine parameters and program parameters can be respectively determined when the generated code is installed on the target machine. In addition, we show how these parametric CUDA programs can be optimized at compile-time in the form of a case discussion, where cases depend on the values of machine parameters (e.g. hardware resource limits) and program parameters (e.g. dimension sizes of thread-blocks). This generation of parametric CUDA kernels requires to deal with non-linear polynomial expressions during the dependence analysis and tiling phase. To achieve these algebraic calculations, we take advantage of techniques from computer algebra, in particular in the RegularChains library of Maple. Various illustrative examples are provided together with performance evaluation
