    Adaptation des images et des vidéos pour des utilisateurs multiples dans des environnements hétérogènes

    La dernière décennie a connu l'émergence de l'utilisation des équipements mobiles comme les assistants personnels et les téléphones, ainsi que la prolifération des réseaux personnels favorisée par le développement considérable dans les technologies de communications. D'autre part, l'information véhiculée a travers le World Wide Web devient de plus en plus visuelle (images et videos) grâce à la numérisation. Afin de permettre à tous les usagers un accès universel à cette information visuelle dans un environnement caractérisé par la diversité des équipements et l'hétérogénéité des réseaux, il devient nécessaire d'adapter les documents multimédia. L'adaptation consiste à appliquer une ou plusieurs transformations sur un document multimédia. Dans ce cadre, plusieurs travaux ont été élaborés en partant de différentes formulations. Nous pensons qu'un système d'adaptation efficace doit choisir les traitements nécessaires à appliquer sur un document visuel afin de maximiser la satisfaction de l'usager. Il doit considérer conjointement les caractéristiques de cet usager ainsi que les performances de son équipement, la qualité de sa connexion et les conditions de son environnement. La majorité des travaux réalisés dans ce domaine n'ont traité que des cas limités, par exemple ajuster une vidéo pour la capacité d'un réseau donné. Dans la présente recherche, nous proposons une solution globale obtenue à l'aide d'un modèle probabiliste qui utilise les traitements des images et des vidéos et l'extraction des caractéristiques des contenus

    Device-based decision-making for adaptation of three-dimensional content

    The goal of this research was the creation of an adaptation mechanism for the delivery of three-dimensional content. The adaptation of content, for various network and terminal capabilities - as well as for different user preferences, is a key feature that needs to be investigated. Current state-of-the art research of the adaptation shows promising results for specific tasks and limited types of content, but is still not well-suited for massive heterogeneous environments. In this research, we present a method for transmitting adapted three-dimensional content to multiple target devices. This paper presents some theoretical and practical methods for adapting three-dimensional content, which includes shapes and animation. We also discuss practical details of the integration of our methods into MPEG-21 and MPEG-4 architecture

    Description-driven Adaptation of Media Resources

    The current multimedia landscape is characterized by a significant diversity in terms of available media formats, network technologies, and device properties. This heterogeneity has resulted in a number of new challenges, such as providing universal access to multimedia content. A solution for this diversity is the use of scalable bit streams, as well as the deployment of a complementary system that is capable of adapting scalable bit streams to the constraints imposed by a particular usage environment (e.g., the limited screen resolution of a mobile device). This dissertation investigates the use of an XML-driven (Extensible Markup Language) framework for the format-independent adaptation of scalable bit streams. Using this approach, the structure of a bit stream is first translated into an XML description. In a next step, the resulting XML description is transformed to reflect a desired adaptation of the bit stream. Finally, the transformed XML description is used to create an adapted bit stream that is suited for playback in the targeted usage environment. The main contribution of this dissertation is BFlavor, a new tool for exposing the syntax of binary media resources as an XML description. Its development was inspired by two other technologies, i.e. MPEG-21 BSDL (Bitstream Syntax Description Language) and XFlavor (Formal Language for Audio-Visual Object Representation, extended with XML features). Although created from a different point of view, both languages offer solutions for translating the syntax of a media resource into an XML representation for further processing. BFlavor (BSDL+XFlavor) harmonizes the two technologies by combining their strengths and eliminating their weaknesses. The expressive power and performance of a BFlavor-based content adaptation chain, compared to tool chains entirely based on either BSDL or XFlavor, were investigated by several experiments. One series of experiments targeted the exploitation of multi-layered temporal scalability in H.264/AVC, paying particular attention to the use of sub-sequences and hierarchical coding patterns, as well as to the use of metadata messages to communicate the bit stream structure to the adaptation logic. BFlavor was the only tool to offer an elegant and practical solution for XML-driven adaptation of H.264/AVC bit streams in the temporal domain

    On robustness against JPEG2000: a performance evaluation of wavelet-based watermarking techniques

    With the emergence of new scalable coding standards, such as JPEG2000, multimedia is stored as scalable coded bit streams that may be adapted to cater network, device and usage preferences in multimedia usage chains providing universal multimedia access. These adaptations include quality, resolution, frame rate and region of interest scalability and achieved by discarding least significant parts of the bit stream according to the scalability criteria. Such content adaptations may also affect the content protection data, such as watermarks, hidden in the original content. Many wavelet-based robust watermarking techniques robust to such JPEG2000 compression attacks are proposed in the literature. In this paper, we have categorized and evaluated the robustness of such wavelet-based image watermarking techniques against JPEG2000 compression, in terms of algorithmic choices, wavelet kernel selection, subband selection, or watermark selection using a new modular framework. As most of the algorithms use a different set of parametric combination, this analysis is particularly useful to understand the effect of various parameters on the robustness under a common platform and helpful to design any such new algorithm. The analysis also considers the imperceptibility performance of the watermark embedding, as robustness and imperceptibility are two main watermarking properties, complementary to each other
