Vision, Action, and Make-Perceive
In this paper, I critically assess the enactive account of visual perception recently defended by Alva Noë (2004). I argue inter alia that the enactive account falsely identifies an object’s apparent shape with its 2D perspectival shape; that it mistakenly assimilates visual shape perception and volumetric object recognition; and that it seriously misrepresents the constitutive role of bodily action in visual awareness. I argue further that noticing an object’s perspectival shape involves a hybrid experience combining both perceptual and imaginative elements – an act of what I call ‘make-perceive.

The multisensory body revealed through its cast shadows
One key issue when conceiving the body as a multisensory object is how the cognitive
system integrates visible instances of the self and other bodies with one\u2019s own
somatosensory processing, to achieve self-recognition and body ownership. Recent
research has strongly suggested that shadows cast by our own body have a special
status for cognitive processing, directing attention to the body in a fast and highly specific
manner. The aim of the present article is to review the most recent scientific contributions
addressing how body shadows affect both sensory/perceptual and attentional processes.
The review examines three main points: (1) body shadows as a special window to
investigate the construction of multisensory body perception; (2) experimental paradigms
and related findings; (3) open questions and future trajectories. The reviewed literature
suggests that shadows cast by one\u2019s own body promote binding between personal
and extrapersonal space and elicit automatic orienting of attention toward the bodypart
casting the shadow. Future research should address whether the effects exerted
by body shadows are similar to those observed when observers are exposed to other
visual instances of their body. The results will further clarify the processes underlying the
merging of vision and somatosensation when creating body representations
Man and Machine: Questions of Risk, Trust and Accountability in Today's AI Technology
Artificial Intelligence began as a field probing some of the most fundamental
questions of science - the nature of intelligence and the design of intelligent
artifacts. But it has grown into a discipline that is deeply entwined with
commerce and society. Today's AI technology, such as expert systems and
intelligent assistants, pose some difficult questions of risk, trust and
accountability. In this paper, we present these concerns, examining them in the
context of historical developments that have shaped the nature and direction of
AI research. We also suggest the exploration and further development of two
paradigms, human intelligence-machine cooperation, and a sociological view of
intelligence, which might help address some of these concerns.Comment: Preprin
From surround to true 3-D
To progress from surround sound to true 3-D requires an updating of the psychoacoustical theories which underlie current technologies. This paper shows how J.J.Gibson’s ecological approach to perception can be applied to audio perception and used to derive 3-D audio technologies based on intelligent pattern recognition and active hypothesis testing. These technologies are suggested as methods which can be used to generate audio environments that are believable and can be explored
How Do You Feel, Developer? An Explanatory Theory of the Impact of Affects on Programming Performance
Affects---emotions and moods---have an impact on cognitive activities and the
working performance of individuals. Development tasks are undertaken through
cognitive processes, yet software engineering research lacks theory on affects
and their impact on software development activities. In this paper, we report
on an interpretive study aimed at broadening our understanding of the
psychology of programming in terms of the experience of affects while
programming, and the impact of affects on programming performance. We conducted
a qualitative interpretive study based on: face-to-face open-ended interviews,
in-field observations, and e-mail exchanges. This enabled us to construct a
novel explanatory theory of the impact of affects on development performance.
The theory is explicated using an established taxonomy framework. The proposed
theory builds upon the concepts of events, affects, attractors, focus, goals,

This is a bibliography of books and articles on consciousness in philosophy, cognitive science, and neuroscience over the last 30 years. There are three main sections, devoted to monographs, edited collections of papers, and articles. The first two of these sections are each divided into three subsections containing books in each of the main areas of research. The third section is divided into 12 subsections, with 10 subject headings for philosophical articles along with two additional subsections for articles in cognitive science and neuroscience. Of course the division is somewhat arbitrary, but I hope that it makes the bibliography easier to use.
This bibliography has first been compiled by Thomas Metzinger and David Chalmers to appear in print in two philosophical anthologies on conscious experience (Metzinger 1995a, b). From 1995 onwards it has been continuously updated by Thomas Metzinger, and now is freely available as a PDF-, RTF-, or HTML-file.
This bibliography mainly attempts to cover the Anglo-Saxon and German debates, in a non-annotated, fully formatted way that makes it easy to "cut and paste" from the original file.
