    A distributed alerting service for open digital library software

    Alerting for Digital Libraries (DL) is an important and useful feature for the library users. To date, two independent services and a few publisher-hosted proprietary services have been developed. Here, we address the problem of integrating alerting as functionality into open source software for distributed digital libraries. DL software is one application out of many that constitute so-called meta-software: software where its installation determines the properties of the actual running system (here: the Digital Library system). For this type of application, existing alerting solutions are insufficient; new ways have to be found for supporting a fragmented network of distributed digital library servers. We propose the design and usage of a distributed Directory Service. This paper also introduces our hybrid approach using two networks and a combination of different distributed routing strategies for event filtering

    An Event-Based Coordination Model for Context-Aware Applications

    International audienceContext-aware applications adapt their behavior depending on changes in their environment context. Programming such applications in a modular way requires to modularize the global context into more specific contexts and attach specific behavior to these contexts. This is reminiscent of aspects and has led to the notion of context-aware aspects. This paper revisits this notion of context-aware aspects in the light of previous work on concurrent event-based aspect-oriented programming (CEAOP). It shows how CEAOP can be extended in a seamless way in order to define a model for the coordination of concurrent adaptation rules with explicit contexts. This makes it possible to reason about the compositions of such rules. The model is concretized into a prototypical modeling language

    The words mobility and network are found together in many contexts. The issue alone of modeling geographical user mobility in wireless networks has countless applications. Depending on one’s background, the concept is investigated with very different tools and aims. Moreover, the last decade saw also a growing interest in code mobility, i.e. the possibility for soft-ware applications (or parts thereof) to migrate and keeps working in different devices and environ-ments. A notable real-life and successful application is distributed computing, which under certain hypothesis can void the need of expensive supercomputers. The general rationale is splitting a very demanding computing task into a large number of independent sub-problems, each addressable by limited-power machines, weakly connected (typically through the Internet, the quintessence of a wired network). Following this lines of thought, we organized this thesis in two distinct and independent parts: Part I It deals with audio fingerprinting, and a special emphasis is put on the application of broadcast mon-itoring and on the implementation aspects. Although the problem is tackled from many sides, one of the most prominent difficulties is the high computing power required for the task. We thus devised and operated a distributed-computing solution, which is described in detail. Tests were conducted on the computing cluster available at the Department of Engineering of the University of Ferrara. Part II It focuses instead on wireless networks. Even if the approach is quite general, the stress is on WiFi networks. More specifically, we tried to evaluate how mobile-users’ experience can be improved. Two tools are considered. In the first place, we wrote a packet-level simulator and used it to esti-mate the impact of pricing strategies in allocating the bandwidth resource, finding out the need for such solutions. Secondly, we developed a high-level simulator that strongly advises to deepen the topic of user cooperation for the selection of the “best” point of access, when many are available.     Study on Large-scale Terrestrial Relaying of Satellite Broadcasted Real-time Multimedia Streams

    none2The chapter describes an architecture to relay on demand a real-time IP multicast audio-video stream broadcasted by a satellite on a terrestrial link. The stream is received by suitably equipped sites and then relayed to other sites that are not equipped with satellite receiving hardware but are nonetheless willing to receive the stream. By exploiting the properties of satellite transmission and adopting a hybrid satellite/terrestrial, multicast/unicast approach, the described architecture allows to overcome the restrictions suffered by multicast traffic in the global Internet, allowing it to scale easily across autonomous systems.     Bootstrapping Cognitive Radio Networks

    Cognitive radio networks promise more efficient spectrum utilization by leveraging degrees of freedom and distributing data collection. The actual realization of these promises is challenged by distributed control, and incomplete, uncertain and possibly conflicting knowledge bases. We consider two problems in bootstrapping, evolving, and managing cognitive radio networks. The first is Link Rendezvous, or how separate radio nodes initially find each other in a spectrum band with many degrees of freedom, and little shared knowledge. The second is how radio nodes can negotiate for spectrum access with incomplete information. To address the first problem, we present our Frequency Parallel Blind Link Rendezvous algorithm. This approach, designed for recent generations of digital front-ends, implicitly shares vague information about spectrum occupancy early in the process, speeding the progress towards a solution. Furthermore, it operates in the frequency domain, facilitating a parallel channel rendezvous. Finally, it operates without a control channel and can rendezvous anywhere in the operating band. We present simulations and analysis on the false alarm rate for both a feature detector and a cross-correlation detector. We compare our results to the conventional frequency hopping sequence rendezvous techniques. To address the second problem, we model the network as a multi-agent system and negotiate by exchanging proposals, augmented with arguments. These arguments include information about priority status and the existence of other nodes. We show in a variety of network topologies that this process leads to solutions not otherwise apparent to individual nodes, and achieves superior network throughput, request satisfaction, and total number of connections, compared to our baselines. The agents independently formulate proposals based upon communication desires, evaluate these proposals based upon capacity constraints, create ariii guments in response to proposal rejections, and re-evaluate proposals based upon received arguments. We present our negotiation rules, messages, and protocol and demonstrate how they interoperate in a simulation environment
