Policy-based techniques for self-managing parallel applications
This paper presents an empirical investigation of policy-based self-management techniques for parallel applications executing in loosely-coupled environments. The dynamic and heterogeneous nature of these environments is discussed and the special considerations for parallel applications are identified. An adaptive strategy for the run-time deployment of tasks of parallel applications is presented. The strategy is based on embedding numerous policies which are informed by contextual and environmental inputs. The policies govern various aspects of behaviour, enhancing flexibility so that the goals of efficiency and performance are achieved despite high levels of environmental variability. A prototype self-managing parallel application is used as a vehicle to explore the feasibility and benefits of the strategy. In particular, several aspects of stability are investigated. A distributed programming environment for Ada
Despite considerable commercial exploitation of fault tolerance systems, significant and difficult research problems remain in such areas as fault detection and correction. A research project is described which constructs a distributed computing test bed for loosely coupled computers. The project is constructing a tool kit to support research into distributed control algorithms, including a distributed Ada compiler, distributed debugger, test harnesses, and environment monitors. The Ada compiler is being written in Ada and will implement distributed computing at the subsystem level. The design goal is to provide a variety of control mechanics for distributed programming while retaining total transparency at the code level
Protocols for Integrity Constraint Checking in Federated Databases
A federated database is comprised of multiple interconnected database systems that primarily operate independently but cooperate to a certain extent. Global integrity constraints can be very useful in federated databases, but the lack of global queries, global transaction mechanisms, and global concurrency control renders traditional constraint management techniques inapplicable. This paper presents a threefold contribution to integrity constraint checking in federated databases: (1) The problem of constraint checking in a federated database environment is clearly formulated. (2) A family of protocols for constraint checking is presented. (3) The differences across protocols in the family are analyzed with respect to system requirements, properties guaranteed by the protocols, and processing and communication costs. Thus, our work yields a suite of options from which a protocol can be chosen to suit the system capabilities and integrity requirements of a particular federated database environment
Open-architecture Implementation of Fragment Molecular Orbital Method for Peta-scale Computing
We present our perspective and goals on highperformance computing for
nanoscience in accordance with the global trend toward "peta-scale computing."
After reviewing our results obtained through the grid-enabled version of the
fragment molecular orbital method (FMO) on the grid testbed by the Japanese
Grid Project, National Research Grid Initiative (NAREGI), we show that FMO is
one of the best candidates for peta-scale applications by predicting its
effective performance in peta-scale computers. Finally, we introduce our new
project constructing a peta-scale application in an open-architecture
implementation of FMO in order to realize both goals of highperformance in

Digitalization and Innovation
Developments in digital technology offer new opportunities to design new products and services. However, creating such digitalized products and services often creates new problems and challenges to firms that are trying to innovate. In this essay, we analyze the impact of digitalization of products and services on innovations. In particular, we argue that digitalization of products will lead to an emergence of new layered product architecture. The layered architecture is characterized by its generative design rules that connect loosely coupled heterogeneous layers. It is pregnant with the potential of unbounded innovations. The new product architecture will require organizations to adopt a new organizing logic of innovation that we dubbed as doubly distributed innovation network. Performance evaluation of a distributed integrative architecture for robotics
The eld of robotics employs a vast amount of coupled sub-systems. These need to interact
cooperatively and concurrently in order to yield the desired results. Some hybrid algorithms
also require intensive cooperative interactions internally. The architecture proposed lends it-
self amenable to problem domains that require rigorous calculations that are usually impeded
by the capacity of a single machine, and incompatibility issues between software computing
elements. Implementations are abstracted away from the physical hardware for ease of de-
velopment and competition in simulation leagues. Monolithic developments are complex, and
the desire for decoupled architectures arises. Decoupling also lowers the threshold for using
distributed and parallel resources. The ability to re-use and re-combine components on de-
mand, therefore is essential, while maintaining the necessary degree of interaction. For this
reason we propose to build software components on top of a Service Oriented Architecture
(SOA) using Web Services. An additional bene t is platform independence regarding both
the operating system and the implementation language. The robot soccer platform as well
as the associated simulation leagues are the target domain for the development. Furthermore
are machine vision and remote process control related portions of the architecture currently
in development and testing for industrial environments. We provide numerical data based on
the Python frameworks ZSI and SOAPpy undermining the suitability of this approach for the
eld of robotics. Response times of signi cantly less than 50 ms even for fully interpreted,
dynamic languages provides hard information showing the feasibility of Web Services based
SOAs even in time critical robotic applications
