    New insights on neutral binary representations for evolutionary optimization

    This paper studies a family of redundant binary representations NNg(l, k), which are based on the mathematical formulation of error control codes, in particular, on linear block codes, which are used to add redundancy and neutrality to the representations. The analysis of the properties of uniformity, connectivity, synonymity, locality and topology of the NNg(l, k) representations is presented, as well as the way an (1+1)-ES can be modeled using Markov chains and applied to NK fitness landscapes with adjacent neighborhood.The results show that it is possible to design synonymously redundant representations that allow an increase of the connectivity between phenotypes. For easy problems, synonymously NNg(l, k) representations, with high locality, and where it is not necessary to present high values of connectivity are the most suitable for an efficient evolutionary search. On the contrary, for difficult problems, NNg(l, k) representations with low locality, which present connectivity between intermediate to high and with intermediate values of synonymity are the best ones. These results allow to conclude that NNg(l, k) representations with better performance in NK fitness landscapes with adjacent neighborhood do not exhibit extreme values of any of the properties commonly considered in the literature of evolutionary computation. This conclusion is contrary to what one would expect when taking into account the literature recommendations. This may help understand the current difficulty to formulate redundant representations, which are proven to be successful in evolutionary computation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Developing redundant binary representations for genetic search

    This paper considers the development of redundant representations for evolutionary computation. Two new families of redundant binary representations are proposed in the context of a simple mutationselection evolutionary model. The first is a family of linear encodings in which the connectivity of the search space may be designed directly via a decoding matrix. The second is a family of representations exhibiting various degrees of neutrality, and is constructed using mathematical tools from error-control coding theory. The study of these representations provides additional insight into the properties of redundant encodings, such as synonymity, locality, and connectivity, and into their interrelationships

    Degenerate neutrality creates evolvable fitness landscapes

    Understanding how systems can be designed to be evolvable is fundamental to research in optimization, evolution, and complex systems science. Many researchers have thus recognized the importance of evolvability, i.e. the ability to find new variants of higher fitness, in the fields of biological evolution and evolutionary computation. Recent studies by Ciliberti et al (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci., 2007) and Wagner (Proc. R. Soc. B., 2008) propose a potentially important link between the robustness and the evolvability of a system. In particular, it has been suggested that robustness may actually lead to the emergence of evolvability. Here we study two design principles, redundancy and degeneracy, for achieving robustness and we show that they have a dramatically different impact on the evolvability of the system. In particular, purely redundant systems are found to have very little evolvability while systems with degeneracy, i.e. distributed robustness, can be orders of magnitude more evolvable. These results offer insights into the general principles for achieving evolvability and may prove to be an important step forward in the pursuit of evolvable representations in evolutionary computation

    Generalised additive multiscale wavelet models constructed using particle swarm optimisation and mutual information for spatio-temporal evolutionary system representation

    A new class of generalised additive multiscale wavelet models (GAMWMs) is introduced for high dimensional spatio-temporal evolutionary (STE) system identification. A novel two-stage hybrid learning scheme is developed for constructing such an additive wavelet model. In the first stage, a new orthogonal projection pursuit (OPP) method, implemented using a particle swarm optimisation(PSO) algorithm, is proposed for successively augmenting an initial coarse wavelet model, where relevant parameters of the associated wavelets are optimised using a particle swarm optimiser. The resultant network model, obtained in the first stage, may however be a redundant model. In the second stage, a forward orthogonal regression (FOR) algorithm, implemented using a mutual information method, is then applied to refine and improve the initially constructed wavelet model. The proposed two-stage hybrid method can generally produce a parsimonious wavelet model, where a ranked list of wavelet functions, according to the capability of each wavelet to represent the total variance in the desired system output signal is produced. The proposed new modelling framework is applied to real observed images, relative to a chemical reaction exhibiting a spatio-temporal evolutionary behaviour, and the associated identification results show that the new modelling framework is applicable and effective for handling high dimensional identification problems of spatio-temporal evolution sytems

    Cover-Encodings of Fitness Landscapes

    The traditional way of tackling discrete optimization problems is by using local search on suitably defined cost or fitness landscapes. Such approaches are however limited by the slowing down that occurs when the local minima that are a feature of the typically rugged landscapes encountered arrest the progress of the search process. Another way of tackling optimization problems is by the use of heuristic approximations to estimate a global cost minimum. Here we present a combination of these two approaches by using cover-encoding maps which map processes from a larger search space to subsets of the original search space. The key idea is to construct cover-encoding maps with the help of suitable heuristics that single out near-optimal solutions and result in landscapes on the larger search space that no longer exhibit trapping local minima. We present cover-encoding maps for the problems of the traveling salesman, number partitioning, maximum matching and maximum clique; the practical feasibility of our method is demonstrated by simulations of adaptive walks on the corresponding encoded landscapes which find the global minima for these problems.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
