Multi-Antenna Techniques for Next Generation Cellular Communications
Future cellular communications are expected to offer substantial improvements for the pre- existing mobile services with higher data rates and lower latency as well as pioneer new types of applications that must comply with strict demands from a wider range of user types. All of these tasks require utmost efficiency in the use of spectral resources. Deploying multiple antennas introduces an additional signal dimension to wireless data transmissions, which provides a significant alternative solution against the plateauing capacity issue of the limited available spectrum. Multi-antenna techniques and the associated key enabling technologies possess unquestionable potential to play a key role in the evolution of next generation cellular systems.
Spectral efficiency can be improved on downlink by concurrently serving multiple users with high-rate data connections on shared resources. In this thesis optimized multi-user multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transmissions are investigated on downlink from both filter design and resource allocation/assignment points of view. Regarding filter design, a joint baseband processing method is proposed specifically for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions, where the necessary signaling overhead can be compensated for. Regarding resource scheduling, greedy- and genetic-based algorithms are proposed that demand lower complexity with large number of resource blocks relative to prior implementations.
Channel estimation techniques are investigated for massive MIMO technology. In case of channel reciprocity, this thesis proposes an overhead reduction scheme for the signaling of user channel state information (CSI) feedback during a relative antenna calibration. In addition, a multi-cell coordination method is proposed for subspace-based blind estimators on uplink, which can be implicitly translated to downlink CSI in the presence of ideal reciprocity. Regarding non-reciprocal channels, a novel estimation technique is proposed based on reconstructing full downlink CSI from a select number of dominant propagation paths. The proposed method offers drastic compressions in user feedback reports and requires much simpler downlink training processes.
Full-duplex technology can provide up to twice the spectral efficiency of conventional resource divisions. This thesis considers a full-duplex two-hop link with a MIMO relay and investigates mitigation techniques against the inherent loop-interference. Spatial-domain suppression schemes are developed for the optimization of full-duplex MIMO relaying in a coverage extension scenario on downlink. The proposed methods are demonstrated to generate data rates that closely approximate their global bounds
The focus of this thesis is the processing of signals and design of algorithms
that can be used to enable radar functions in communications systems.
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular multicarrier
modulation waveform in communication systems. As a wideband
signal, OFDM improves resolution and enables spectral efficiency in radar
systems, while also improving detection performance thanks to its inherent
frequency diversity. This thesis aims to use multicarrier waveforms for radar
systems, to enable the simultaneous operation of radar and communication
functions on the same device. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first
part, studies the adaptation and application of other multicarrier waveforms
to radar functions. At the present time many studies have been carried out
to jointly use the OFDM signal for communication and radar functions, but
other waveforms have shown to be possible candidates for communication
applications. Therefore, studies on the evaluation of the application of these
same signals to radar functions are necessary. In this thesis, to demonstrate
that other multicarrier waveforms can overcome the OFDM waveform
in radar/communication (RadCom) systems, we propose the adaptation of
the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC), generalized frequency division multiplexing
(GFDM) and universal filtering multicarrier (UFMC) waveforms for radar
functions. These alternative waveforms were compared performance-wise
regarding achievable target parameter estimation performance, amount of
residual background noise in the radar image, impact of intersystem interference
and flexibility of parameterization. In the second part of the thesis,
signal processing techniques are explored to solve some of the limitations
of the use of multicarrier waveforms for RadCom systems. Radar systems
based on OFDM are promising candidates for future intelligent transport networks.
Exploring the dual functionality enabled by OFDM, we presents cooperative
methods for high-resolution delay-Doppler and direction-of-arrival
estimation. High-resolution parameter estimation is an important requirement
for automotive radar systems, especially in multi-target scenarios that
require reliable target separation performance. By exploring the cooperation
between vehicles, the studies presented in this thesis also enable the distributed
tracking of targets. The result is a highly accurate multi-target tracking
across the entire cooperative vehicle network, leading to improvements
in transport reliability and safety.O foco desta tese é o processamento de sinais e desenvolvimento de algoritmos
Multicarrier); GFDM (Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing); e UFMC
e parametrização do sistema.

Advanced Coding And Modulation For Ultra-wideband And Impulsive Noises
The ever-growing demand for higher quality and faster multimedia content delivery over short distances in home environments drives the quest for higher data rates in wireless personal area networks (WPANs). One of the candidate IEEE 802.15.3a WPAN proposals support data rates up to 480 Mbps by using punctured convolutional codes with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation for a multi-band orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) system over ultra wideband (UWB) channels. In the first part of this dissertation, we combine more powerful near-Shannon-limit turbo codes with bandwidth efficient trellis coded modulation, i.e., turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM), to further improve the data rates up to 1.2 Gbps. A modified iterative decoder for this TTCM coded MB-OFDM system is proposed and its bit error rate performance under various impulsive noises over both Gaussian and UWB channel is extensively investigated, especially in mismatched scenarios. A robust decoder which is immune to noise mismatch is provided based on comparison of impulsive noises in time domain and frequency domain. The accurate estimation of the dynamic noise model could be very difficult or impossible at the receiver, thus a significant performance degradation may occur due to noise mismatch. In the second part of this dissertation, we prove that the minimax decoder in \cite, which instead of minimizing the average bit error probability aims at minimizing the worst bit error probability, is optimal and robust to certain noise model with unknown prior probabilities in two and higher dimensions. Besides turbo codes, another kind of error correcting codes which approach the Shannon capacity is low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In the last part of this dissertation, we extend the density evolution method for sum-product decoding using mismatched noises. We will prove that as long as the true noise type and the estimated noise type used in the decoder are both binary-input memoryless output symmetric channels, the output from mismatched log-likelihood ratio (LLR) computation is also symmetric. We will show the Shannon capacity can be evaluated for mismatched LLR computation and it can be reduced if the mismatched LLR computation is not an one-to-one mapping function. We will derive the Shannon capacity, threshold and stable condition of LDPC codes for mismatched BIAWGN and BIL noise types. The results show that the noise variance estimation errors will not affect the Shannon capacity and stable condition, but the errors do reduce the threshold. The mismatch in noise type will only reduce Shannon capacity when LLR computation is based on BIL
Multiantenna Interference Mitigation Schemes and Resource Allocation for Cognitive Radio
Maximum and efficient utilization of available resources has been a central theme of research on various areas of science and engineering. Wireless communication is not an exception to this. With the rapid growth of wireless communication applications, radio frequency spectrum has become a valuable commodity. Supporting very high demands for data rate and throughput has become a challenging problem which requires innovative solutions. Dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) based cognitive radio (CR) is envisioned as a promising technology for future wireless communication systems, such as fifth generation (5G) further development and sixth generation (6G). Extensive research has been done in the areas of CRs and it is considered to mitigate the spectral crowding problem by introducing the notion of opportunistic spectrum usage. Spectrum sensing, which enables CRs to identify spectral holes, is a critical component in CR technology. Furthermore, improving the efficiency of the radio spectrum use through spectrum sensing and dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is one of the emerging trends.
In the first part of this thesis, we focus on enhancing the spectrum usage of CR’s using interference cancellation methods that provides considerable performance gains with realistic computational complexity, especially, in the context of the widely used multicarrier waveforms. The primary focus is on interference rejection combining (IRC) methods, applied to the black-space cognitive radio (BS-CR). Earlier studies on the BS-CR in the literature were focused on using CRs as repeaters for the primary transmitter to guarantee that the CR is not causing significant interference to nearby primary users’ receivers. This kind of approaches are transmitter-centric in nature. In this thesis, receiver-centric approaches such as multi-antenna diversity combining, especially enhanced IRC methods, are considered and evaluated. IRC methods have been widely studied and adopted in several practical wireless communication systems. We focus on developing such BS-CR schemes under strong interference conditions, which has not been studied in the CR literature so far. Spatial covariance matrix estimation under mobility and high carrier frequencies is found to be the most critical part of such scheme. Algorithms and methods to mitigate these effects are developed in this thesis and they are evaluated under realistic BS-CR receiver operating conditions. We use sample covariance estimation approach with silent gaps in the CR transmisison. Covariance interpolation between silent gaps improves greatly the robustness with time-varying channels. Good link performance can be reached with low mobility at carrier frequency considered for the TV white-spaced case. The proposed BS-CR scheme could be feasible at below 6 GHz frequencies with pedestrian mobilities.
The second part of this thesis investigates the effect of radio frequency (RF) impairments on the performance of the cognitive wireless communication. There are various unavoidable imperfections, mainly due to the limitations of analog high-frequency transmitter and receiver circuits. These imperfections include power amplifier (PA) non-linearities, receiver nonlinearities, and carrier frequency offset (CFO), which are considered in this study. These effects lead to significant signal distortion and, as a result of this, the wireless link quality may deteriorate. In multicarrier communications such signal distortions may lead to additional interference, and it is important to evaluate their effects on spectrum sensing quality and on the performance of the proposed BS-CR scheme. This part of the thesis provides critical analysis and insights into such issues caused by RF imperfections and demonstrates the need for designing proper compensation techniques required to avoid/reduce such degradations. It is found that the transmitter’s PA nonlinearities affect in the same way as in basic OFDM systems and BS-CR receiver’s linearity requirements are similar to those for advanced DSP-intensive software defined radios. The CR receiver’s CFO with respect to the PU has the most critical effect. However, synchronizing the CR with the needed high accuracy is considered achievable due to the PU signal’s high-power level.
The final part of the thesis briefly looks at alternate waveforms and techniques that can be used in CRs. The filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) waveforms are considered as an alternative to the widely used OFDM schemes. Here the core idea is interference avoidance, targeting to reduce the interference leakage between CRs and the primary systems, by means of using a waveform with good spectrum localization properties. FBMC system’s performance is compared with OFDM based system in the context of CRs. The performance is compared from a combined spectrum sensing and resource allocation point of view through simulations. It is found that well-localized CR waveforms improve the CR link capacity, but with poorly localized primary signals, these possibilities are rather limited

Design and Linearization of Energy Efficiency Power Amplifier in Nonlinear OFDM Transmitter for LTE-5G Applications. Simulation and measurements of energy efficiency power amplifier in the presence of nonlinear OFDM transmitter system and digital predistortion based on Hammerstein-Wiener method
This research work has made an effort to understand a novel line of radio frequency
power amplifiers (RFPAs) that address initiatives for efficiency enhancement and
linearity compensation to harmonize the fifth generation (5G) campaign. The objective
is to enhance the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-long
term evolution (OFDM-LTE) transmitter by reducing the nonlinear distortion of the
RFPA.
The first part of this work explores the design and implementation of 15.5 W class AB
RF power amplifier, adopting a balanced technique to stimulate efficiency enhancement
and redeeming exhibition of excessive power in the transmitter. Consequently, this work
goes beyond improving efficiency over a linear RF power amplifier design; in which a
comprehensive investigation on the fundamental and harmonic components of class F
RF power amplifier using a load-pull approach to realise an optimum load impedance
and the matching network is presented. The frequency bandwidth for both amplifiers was
allocated to operate in the 2.620-2.690 GHz of mobile LTE applications.
The second part explores the development of the behavioural model for the class AB
power amplifier. A particular novel, Hammerstein-Wiener based model is proposed to
describe the dynamic nonlinear behaviour of the power amplifier. The RF power amplifier
nonlinear distortion is approximated using a new linear parameter approximation
approach. The first and second-order Hammerstein-Wiener using the Normalised Least
Mean Square Error (NLMSE) algorithm is used with the aim of easing the complexity of
filtering process during linear memory cancellation. Moreover, an enhanced adaptive
Wiener model is proposed to explore the nonlinear memory effect in the system. The
proposed approach is able to balance between convergence speed and high-level
accuracy when compared with behavioural modelling algorithms that are more complex
in computation.
Finally, the adaptive predistorter technique is implemented and verified in the OFDM
transceiver test-bed. The results were compared against the computed one from
MATLAB simulation for OFDM and 5G modulation transmitters. The results have
confirmed the reliability of the model and the effectiveness of the proposed predistorter.Fundacão para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, under

Since the appearance of mobile communications, the users of this technology have been growing exponentially every day. The escalating mobile traffic growth it has been imposed by the proliferation of smartphones and tablets. The increasing and more intensive use of wireless communications may lead to a future breaking point, where the traditional systems will fail to support the required capability, spectral and energy efficiency. On the other hand, to cover all this current need to have more and more data it is necessary to provide a new range of data rates around the gigabits per second.
Today, almost all mobile communications systems use spectrum in the range of 300MHz – 3GHz. It is needed to start looking to the range of 3GHz – 300GHz spectrum for mobile broadband applications. Millimeter waves are one way to alleviate the spectrum gridlock at lower frequencies.
MIMO based systems has been researched for the last 20 years and are now part of the current standards. However, to achieve more gains, a grander view of the MIMO concept envisions the use of a large scale of antennas at each base stations, a concept referred as massive MIMO. The symbiotic combination of these technologies and other ones will lead to the development of a new generation system known as the 5G.
The knowledge of the channel state information at the transmitter is very important in real massive MIMO millimeter wave systems. In this dissertation a limited feedback strategy for a hybrid massive MIMO OFDM system is proposed, where only a part of the parameters associated to the link channel are quantized and fed back. The limited feedback strategy employs a uniform-based quantization for channel amplitudes, angle of departure and angle of arrival in time domain. After being fed back, this information is used to reconstruct the overall channel in frequency domain and the transmit antenna array, which are then used to compute the hybrid analog-digital precoders. Numerical results show that the proposed quantization strategy achieve a performance close to the one obtained with perfect full channel, with a low overhead and complexityDesde o aparecimento das comunicações móveis, os utilizadores desta tecnologia têm vindo a crescer exponencialmente todos os dias.
