Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)
This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio
Emergency Evacuation Software Model For Simulation Of Physical Changes
Public space such as schools, cinemas, shopping malls, etc. must have an emergency evacuation system in place. Such places are also required to follow certain regulations and protocols for emergency evacuation to assure the safety of their occupants inside from any unpredictable incident. For nearly two decades, companies/organizations are using simulation models/software for evacuation planning. Researchers are working on these software models to improve the efficiency using latest algorithms. This thesis focuses on creating a base software model of evacuation systems for 3D indoor environments to simulate physical changes such as retractable chairs, movable walls etc., to evaluate their effectiveness before committing to those changes. This research tries to address various flaws and shortcomings of previous software. We are using tools like Unity 3D and Autodesk Maya to simulate suggested changes. It provides planners as well as researchers a new perspective to work on new recommended physical changes to design public venues
Virtual Reality Games for Motor Rehabilitation
This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion
DESURBS deliverable 2.2: tools for the assessment of security threats
This report constitutes Deliverable 2.2 of the FP7 Security Program research project ‘Designing Safer
Urban Spaces’ (DESURBS, Grant Agreement no. 261652). The purpose of this report is to highlight
the examples of open access online security and resilience approaches and tools and key documents
that support decision making in regard to the Integrated Security and Resilience (ISR) framework
(WP2.3), the structure of which has been incorporated into all the WP2 deliverables.
The report presents information on the approaches mentioned above, found during the course of an
extensive literature review, and from data collection that has been undertaken in the Nottingham
(UK) and Jerusalem (Israel) case study cities of the project. This deliverable demonstrates that there
is a great number of tools and documents available online, however the majority of them are
context-specific and can only provide partial information that can be useful in disaster risk
management.
It has been identified that many of the tools are multi-hazard and can be used in conjunction with
international documents and guidelines. There is however a lack of open-access tools for specific
hazards, in particular industrial accidents and ground movements. This is due to a high specificity of
these events and a necessity to use high-tech equipment for identification of these hazards and their
mitigation

Transdisciplinary Models and Applications investigates a variety of programming languages used in validating and verifying models in order to assist in their eventual implementation. Engineering Resilient Collective Adaptive Systems by Self-Stabilisation
Collective adaptive systems are an emerging class of networked computational
systems, particularly suited in application domains such as smart cities,
complex sensor networks, and the Internet of Things. These systems tend to
feature large scale, heterogeneity of communication model (including
opportunistic peer-to-peer wireless interaction), and require inherent
self-adaptiveness properties to address unforeseen changes in operating
conditions. In this context, it is extremely difficult (if not seemingly
intractable) to engineer reusable pieces of distributed behaviour so as to make
them provably correct and smoothly composable.
Building on the field calculus, a computational model (and associated
toolchain) capturing the notion of aggregate network-level computation, we
address this problem with an engineering methodology coupling formal theory and
computer simulation. On the one hand, functional properties are addressed by
identifying the largest-to-date field calculus fragment generating
self-stabilising behaviour, guaranteed to eventually attain a correct and
stable final state despite any transient perturbation in state or topology, and
including highly reusable building blocks for information spreading,
aggregation, and time evolution. On the other hand, dynamical properties are
addressed by simulation, empirically evaluating the different performances that
can be obtained by switching between implementations of building blocks with
provably equivalent functional properties. Overall, our methodology sheds light
on how to identify core building blocks of collective behaviour, and how to
select implementations that improve system performance while leaving overall

Investigating the performance of transport infrastructure using real-time data and a scalable multi-modal agent based model
The idea that including more information in more dynamic and iterative ways is central to the promise of the big data paradigm. The hope is that via new data sources, such as remote sensors and mobile phones, the reliance on heavily simplified generalised functions for model inputs will be erased. This trade between idealised and actual empirical data will be matched with dynamic models which consider complexity at a fundamental level, inherently mirroring the systems they are attempting to replicate. Cloud computing brings the possibility of doing all of this, in less time than the simplified macro models of the past, thus enabling better answers and at the time of critical decision making junctures.
This research was task driven - the question of high speed rail versus aviation led to an investigation into the simplifications and assumptions that back up many of the commonly held beliefs on the sustainability of different modes of transport. The literature ultimately highlighted the need for context specific information; actual load factors, actual journey times considering traffic/engineering works and so on.
Thus, rather than being explicitly an exercise in answering a specific question, a specific question was used to drive the development of a tool which may hold promise for answering a range of transportation related questions. The original contributions of this work are, firstly the use of real-time data sources to quantify temporally and spatially dynamic network performance metrics (eg. journey times on different transport models) and secondly to organise these data sources in a framework which can handle the volume and type of the data and organise the data in a way so that it is useful for the dynamic agent based modelling of future scenarios.EPSRC I Case Studentship with Ove Arup & Partner
Ecosystemic Evolution Feeded by Smart Systems
Information Society is advancing along a route of ecosystemic evolution. ICT and Internet advancements, together with the progression of the systemic approach for enhancement and application of Smart Systems, are grounding such an evolution. The needed approach is therefore expected to evolve by increasingly fitting into the basic requirements of a significant general enhancement of human and social well-being, within all spheres of life (public, private, professional). This implies enhancing and exploiting the net-living virtual space, to make it a virtuous beneficial integration of the real-life space. Meanwhile, contextual evolution of smart cities is aiming at strongly empowering that ecosystemic approach by enhancing and diffusing net-living benefits over our own lived territory, while also incisively targeting a new stable socio-economic local development, according to social, ecological, and economic sustainability requirements. This territorial focus matches with a new glocal vision, which enables a more effective diffusion of benefits in terms of well-being, thus moderating the current global vision primarily fed by a global-scale market development view. Basic technological advancements have thus to be pursued at the system-level. They include system architecting for virtualization of functions, data integration and sharing, flexible basic service composition, and end-service personalization viability, for the operation and interoperation of smart systems, supporting effective net-living advancements in all application fields. Increasing and basically mandatory importance must also be increasingly reserved for human–technical and social–technical factors, as well as to the associated need of empowering the cross-disciplinary approach for related research and innovation. The prospected eco-systemic impact also implies a social pro-active participation, as well as coping with possible negative effects of net-living in terms of social exclusion and isolation, which require incisive actions for a conformal socio-cultural development. In this concern, speed, continuity, and expected long-term duration of innovation processes, pushed by basic technological advancements, make ecosystemic requirements stricter. This evolution requires also a new approach, targeting development of the needed basic and vocational education for net-living, which is to be considered as an engine for the development of the related ‘new living know-how’, as well as of the conformal ‘new making know-how’
