    Implementation of Bus-Based and NoC-Based MP3 Decoders on FPGA

    The trend of modern System-on-Chip (SoC) design is increasing in size and number of Processing Elements (PE) for various and general purpose tasks. Emergence of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) into the world of technology has lowered the limitations faced by Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) design. FPGA has a less timeto- market and is a perfect candidate for prototyping purposes due to the flexibility they create for the design and this is the key feature of the FPGA technology. Technology advancements have introduced reconfiguration concepts which increase the flexibility of FPGA designs more. One method to improve SoC's performance is to adopt a sophi sticated communication medium between PEs to achieve a high throughput. Bus architecture has been improved to meet the requirements of high-performance SoCs, however, its inherently poor scalability limjts their enhancement. The Network-on-Chip (NoC) design paradigm has emerged to overcome the scalability limitations of point-to-point and bus communkation. This thesis presents an investigation towards NoC versus bus based implementation of an SoC. An MP3 decoder has been selected as an application to be implemented on the proposed design. The final design in the thes is demonstrated that the NoC based MP3 decoder achieves a 14% faster clock frequency and real time operation with the NoC based design decode an MP3 frame on average in 10% less time that the bus based MP3 decoder

    Automated Debugging Methodology for FPGA-based Systems

    Electronic devices make up a vital part of our lives. These are seen from mobiles, laptops, computers, home automation, etc. to name a few. The modern designs constitute billions of transistors. However, with this evolution, ensuring that the devices fulfill the designer’s expectation under variable conditions has also become a great challenge. This requires a lot of design time and effort. Whenever an error is encountered, the process is re-started. Hence, it is desired to minimize the number of spins required to achieve an error-free product, as each spin results in loss of time and effort. Software-based simulation systems present the main technique to ensure the verification of the design before fabrication. However, few design errors (bugs) are likely to escape the simulation process. Such bugs subsequently appear during the post-silicon phase. Finding such bugs is time-consuming due to inherent invisibility of the hardware. Instead of software simulation of the design in the pre-silicon phase, post-silicon techniques permit the designers to verify the functionality through the physical implementations of the design. The main benefit of the methodology is that the implemented design in the post-silicon phase runs many order-of-magnitude faster than its counterpart in pre-silicon. This allows the designers to validate their design more exhaustively. This thesis presents five main contributions to enable a fast and automated debugging solution for reconfigurable hardware. During the research work, we used an obstacle avoidance system for robotic vehicles as a use case to illustrate how to apply the proposed debugging solution in practical environments. The first contribution presents a debugging system capable of providing a lossless trace of debugging data which permits a cycle-accurate replay. This methodology ensures capturing permanent as well as intermittent errors in the implemented design. The contribution also describes a solution to enhance hardware observability. It is proposed to utilize processor-configurable concentration networks, employ debug data compression to transmit the data more efficiently, and partially reconfiguring the debugging system at run-time to save the time required for design re-compilation as well as preserve the timing closure. The second contribution presents a solution for communication-centric designs. Furthermore, solutions for designs with multi-clock domains are also discussed. The third contribution presents a priority-based signal selection methodology to identify the signals which can be more helpful during the debugging process. A connectivity generation tool is also presented which can map the identified signals to the debugging system. The fourth contribution presents an automated error detection solution which can help in capturing the permanent as well as intermittent errors without continuous monitoring of debugging data. The proposed solution works for designs even in the absence of golden reference. The fifth contribution proposes to use artificial intelligence for post-silicon debugging. We presented a novel idea of using a recurrent neural network for debugging when a golden reference is present for training the network. Furthermore, the idea was also extended to designs where golden reference is not present

Esta tendência tem sido intensificada nos últimos anos com o movimento de sustentabilidade ambiental. A concepção correta de um sistema eletrônico de baixo consumo de energia é um problema de vários níveis de complexidade e exige estratégias sistemáticas na sua construção. Fora disso, a adoção de qualquer técnica de redução de energia sempre está vinculada com objetivos especiais e provoca alguns impactos no projeto. Apesar dos projetistas conheçam bem os impactos de forma qualitativa, as detalhes quantitativas ainda são incógnitas ou apenas mantidas dentro do 'know-how' das empresas. Neste trabalho, de acordo com resultados experimentais baseado num plataforma de SoC1 industrial, tentamos quantificar os impactos derivados do uso de técnicas de redução de consumo de energia. Nos concentramos em relacionar o fator de redução de energia de cada técnica aos impactos em termo de área, desempenho, esforço de implementação e verificação. Na ausência desse tipo de dados, que relacionam o esforço de engenharia com as metas de consumo de energia, incertezas e atrasos serão frequentes no cronograma de projeto. Esperamos que este tipo de orientações possam ajudar/guiar os arquitetos de projeto em selecionar as técnicas adequadas para reduzir o consumo de energia dentro do alcance de orçamento e cronograma de projetoAbstract: The semiconductor industry has always faced strong demands to solve the problem of heat dissipation and reduce the power consumption in electronic devices. This trend has been increased in recent years with the action of environmental sustainability. The correct conception of an electronic system for low power consumption is an issue with multiple levels of complexities and requires systematic approaches in its construction. However, the adoption of any technique for reducing the power consumption is always linked with some specific goals and causes some impacts on the project. Although the designers know well that these impacts can affect the design in a quality aspect, the quantitative details are still unkown or just be kept inside the company's know-how. In this work, according to the experimental results based on an industrial SoC2 platform, we try to quantify the impacts of the use of low power techniques. We will relate the power reduction factor of each technique to the impact in terms of area, performance, implementation and verification effort. In the absence of such data, which relates the engineering effort to the goals of power consumption, uncertainties and delays are frequent.     Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration for Dependable Systems

    Moore’s law has served as goal and motivation for consumer electronics manufacturers in the last decades. The results in terms of processing power increase in the consumer electronics devices have been mainly achieved due to cost reduction and technology shrinking. However, reducing physical geometries mainly affects the electronic devices’ dependability, making them more sensitive to soft-errors like Single Event Transient (SET) of Single Event Upset (SEU) and hard (permanent) faults, e.g. due to aging effects. Accordingly, safety critical systems often rely on the adoption of old technology nodes, even if they introduce longer design time w.r.t. consumer electronics. In fact, functional safety requirements are increasingly pushing industry in developing innovative methodologies to design high-dependable systems with the required diagnostic coverage. On the other hand commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices adoption began to be considered for safety-related systems due to real-time requirements, the need for the implementation of computationally hungry algorithms and lower design costs. In this field FPGA market share is constantly increased, thanks to their flexibility and low non-recurrent engineering costs, making them suitable for a set of safety critical applications with low production volumes.     Performance and area evaluations of processor-based benchmarks on FPGA devices

    The computing system on SoCs is being long-term research since the FPGA technology has emerged due to its personality of re-programmable fabric, reconfigurable computing, and fast development time to market. During the last decade, uni-processor in a SoC is no longer to deal with the high growing market for complex applications such as Mobile Phones audio and video encoding, image and network processing. Due to the number of transistors on a silicon wafer is increasing, the recent FPGAs or embedded systems are advancing toward multi-processor-based design to meet tremendous performance and benefit this kind of systems are possible. Therefore, is an upcoming age of the MPSoC. In addition, most of the embedded processors are soft-cores, because they are flexible and reconfigurable for specific software functions and easy to build homogenous multi-processor systems for parallel programming. Moreover, behavioural synthesis tools are becoming a lot more powerful and enable to create datapath of logic units from high-level algorithms such as C to HDL and available for partitioning a HW/SW concurrent methodology. A range of embedded processors is able to implement on a FPGA-based prototyping to integrate the CPUs on a programmable device. This research is, firstly represent different types of computer architectures in modern embedded processors that are followed in different type of software applications (eg. Multi-threading Operations or Complex Functions) on FPGA-based SoCs; and secondly investigate their capability by executing a wide-range of multimedia software codes (Integer-algometric only) in different models of the processor-systems (uni-processor or multi-processor or Co-design), and finally compare those results in terms of the benchmarks and resource utilizations within FPGAs. All the examined programs were written in standard C and executed in a variety numbers of soft-core processors or hardware units to obtain the execution times. However, the number of processors and their customizable configuration or hardware datapath being generated are limited by a target FPGA resource, and designers need to understand the FPGA-based tradeoffs that have been considered - Speed versus Area. For this experimental purpose, I defined benchmarks into DLP / HLS catalogues, which are "data" and "function" intensive respectively. The programs of DLP will be executed in LEON3 MP and LE1 CMP multi-processor systems and the programs of HLS in the LegUp Co-design system on target FPGAs. In preliminary, the performance of the soft-core processors will be examined by executing all the benchmarks. The whole story of this thesis work centres on the issue of the execute times or the speed-up and area breakdown on FPGA devices in terms of different programs

    FPGA dynamic and partial reconfiguration : a survey of architectures, methods, and applications

    Dynamic and partial reconfiguration are key differentiating capabilities of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). While they have been studied extensively in academic literature, they find limited use in deployed systems. We review FPGA reconfiguration, looking at architectures built for the purpose, and the properties of modern commercial architectures. We then investigate design flows, and identify the key challenges in making reconfigurable FPGA systems easier to design. Finally, we look at applications where reconfiguration has found use, as well as proposing new areas where this capability places FPGAs in a unique position for adoption

    Algorithms for compression of high dynamic range images and video

    The recent advances in sensor and display technologies have brought upon the High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging capability. The modern multiple exposure HDR sensors can achieve the dynamic range of 100-120 dB and LED and OLED display devices have contrast ratios of 10^5:1 to 10^6:1. Despite the above advances in technology the image/video compression algorithms and associated hardware are yet based on Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) technology, i.e. they operate within an effective dynamic range of up to 70 dB for 8 bit gamma corrected images. Further the existing infrastructure for content distribution is also designed for SDR, which creates interoperability problems with true HDR capture and display equipment. The current solutions for the above problem include tone mapping the HDR content to fit SDR. However this approach leads to image quality associated problems, when strong dynamic range compression is applied. Even though some HDR-only solutions have been proposed in literature, they are not interoperable with current SDR infrastructure and are thus typically used in closed systems. Given the above observations a research gap was identified in the need for efficient algorithms for the compression of still images and video, which are capable of storing full dynamic range and colour gamut of HDR images and at the same time backward compatible with existing SDR infrastructure. To improve the usability of SDR content it is vital that any such algorithms should accommodate different tone mapping operators, including those that are spatially non-uniform. In the course of the research presented in this thesis a novel two layer CODEC architecture is introduced for both HDR image and video coding. Further a universal and computationally efficient approximation of the tone mapping operator is developed and presented. It is shown that the use of perceptually uniform colourspaces for internal representation of pixel data enables improved compression efficiency of the algorithms. Further proposed novel approaches to the compression of metadata for the tone mapping operator is shown to improve compression performance for low bitrate video content. Multiple compression algorithms are designed, implemented and compared and quality-complexity trade-offs are identified. Finally practical aspects of implementing the developed algorithms are explored by automating the design space exploration flow and integrating the high level systems design framework with domain specific tools for synthesis and simulation of multiprocessor systems.     An FPGA Based Hardware Accelerator for Remote Surveillance Cameras

    The Blackeye II camera, produced by Kinopta, is used for remote security, conservation and traffic flow surveillance. The camera uses an image sensor to acquire photographs which undergo image processing and JPEG encoding on a microprocessor. Although the microprocessor performs other tasks, it is the processing and encoding of images that limit the frame rate of the camera to 2 frames per second (fps). Clients have requested an increase to 12.5 fps while adding more image processing to each photograph. The current microprocessor-based system is unable to achieve this. Custom digital logic systems perform well on processes that naturally form a pipeline, such as the Blackeye II image processing system. This project develops a digital logic system based on an FPGA to receive images from the image sensor, perform the required image processing operations, encode the images in JPEG format and send them on to the microprocessor. The objective is to implement a proof of concept device based upon the Blackeye II’s existing hardware and an FPGA development board. It will implement the proposed pipeline including one example of an image processing operation. A JPEG encoder is designed to process the 752 × 480 greyscale photographs from the image processor in real time. The JPEG encoder consists of four stages: discrete cosine transform (DCT), quantisation, zig-zag buffer and Huffman encoder. The DCT design is based upon the work of Woods et al. [1], which is improved on. An analysis of the relationship between precision and accuracy in the DCT and quantisation stages is used to minimise the system’s resource requirements. The JPEG encoder is successfully tested in simulation. Input and output stages are added to the design. The input stage receives data from the image sensor and removes breaks in the data stream. The output stage must concatenate the data from the JPEG encoder and transmit it to the microprocessor via the microprocessor’s ISI (image sensor interface) peripheral. An image sharpening filter is developed and inserted into the pipeline between the input and JPEG encoder. Because remote surveillance cameras are battery powered, the minimisation of power consumption is a key concern. To minimise power consumption a mechanism is introduced to track those modules in the pipeline that are in use at any time. Any not in use are paused by gating the module’s clock source. Once the system is complete and tested in simulation it is loaded into hardware. The FPGA development board is attached to the image sensor board and microprocessor board of the Blackeye II camera by a purpose-built breakout board. Plugging the microprocessor board into a PC provides a live stream of images proving the successful operation of the FPGA system. The project objectives were exceeded by increasing the frame rate of the Blackeye II to 20 fps, which will not decrease with additional image processing operations. The project was viewed as a success by Kinopta, who have committed to its further development

    A Reconfigurable Approximate JPEG Encoder Implemented On FPGA Platform

    Approximate computing is a blooming field of research, which involves a compro- mise of an application’s accuracy to make it more efficient. It necessarily involves a deliberate effort to make an application imprecise in order to conserve some re- source. While the techniques for approximation may include using approximate functional units, approximate storage hardware, approximate network communica- tion or executing algorithms with varying precision, in this thesis, we mainly aim to use approximate arithmetic units in a JPEG Encoder Core. Using imprecise arithmetic units requires an identification of the applications which are resilient to errors. JPEG compression is inherently a lossy compression as the degradation in image quality isn’t perceptible to the end users for a significant compression ratio. This tolerance of JPEG compression to a loss of data is exploited to replace the accurate computationally intensive blocks of the JPEG encoding algo- rithm with their imprecise counterparts. The approximate hardware design proposed in this thesis is also reconfigurable, which implies that the end user can select the level of approximation desired based on the loss in accuracy allowed. The reconfigurable approximate JPEG hardware is also implemented on the FPGA platform. The FPGA emulation of the approximate and the precise ver- sions of the JPEG Encoder core is done on the Altera DE1-SoC with Cyclone V device and an ARM based Hard Processor System. The emulation provided a max- imum area reduction by 45%, maximum delay reduction by 29% and a maximum power reduction by 28% for an approximation of 8 least significant bits. For approx- imation of more than 8 least significant bits, the peak-signal-to-noise ratio of the decompressed image is very low, resulting in poor image quality
