Time Delay Estimation from Low Rate Samples: A Union of Subspaces Approach
Time delay estimation arises in many applications in which a multipath medium
has to be identified from pulses transmitted through the channel. Various
approaches have been proposed in the literature to identify time delays
introduced by multipath environments. However, these methods either operate on
the analog received signal, or require high sampling rates in order to achieve
reasonable time resolution. In this paper, our goal is to develop a unified
approach to time delay estimation from low rate samples of the output of a
multipath channel. Our methods result in perfect recovery of the multipath
delays from samples of the channel output at the lowest possible rate, even in
the presence of overlapping transmitted pulses. This rate depends only on the
number of multipath components and the transmission rate, but not on the
bandwidth of the probing signal. In addition, our development allows for a
variety of different sampling methods. By properly manipulating the low-rate
samples, we show that the time delays can be recovered using the well-known
ESPRIT algorithm. Combining results from sampling theory with those obtained in
the context of direction of arrival estimation methods, we develop necessary
and sufficient conditions on the transmitted pulse and the sampling functions
in order to ensure perfect recovery of the channel parameters at the minimal
possible rate. Our results can be viewed in a broader context, as a sampling
theorem for analog signals defined over an infinite union of subspaces
Ultra Wideband Communications: from Analog to Digital
Vordergrund. In solchen Systemen entstehen, wegen der groĂen Anzahl der
empfangenen Mehrwegekomponenten, starke Inter- bzw.
Intrasymbolinterferenzen.
ausnutzen, was sich in verbesserten SchÀtzergebnissen widerspiegelt.
System for Mobile Communications (GSM) und beim Beamforming. The aim of this thesis is to investigate key issues encountered in the
design of transmission schemes and receiving techniques for Ultra Wideband
(UWB) communication systems. Based on different data rate applications,
this work is divided into two parts, where energy efficient and robust
physical layer solutions are proposed, respectively.
Due to a huge bandwidth of UWB signals, a considerable amount of multipath
arrivals with various path gains is resolvable at the receiver. For low
data rate impulse radio UWB systems, suboptimal non-coherent detection is a
simple way to effectively capture the multipath energy. Feasible techniques
that increase the power efficiency and the interference robustness of
non-coherent detection need to be investigated. For high data rate direct
sequence UWB systems, a large number of multipath arrivals results in
severe inter-/intra-symbol interference. Additionally, the system
performance may also be deteriorated by multi-user interference and
narrowband interference. It is necessary to develop advanced signal
processing techniques at the receiver to suppress these interferences.
Part I of this thesis deals with the co-design of signaling schemes and
receiver architectures in low data rate impulse radio UWB systems based on
non-coherent detection.â We analyze the bit error rate performance of
non-coherent detection and characterize a non-coherent combining loss,
i.e., a performance penalty with respect to coherent detection with maximum
ratio multipath combining. The thorough analysis of this loss is very
helpful for the design of transmission schemes and receive techniques
innon-coherent UWB communication systems.â We propose to use optical
orthogonal codes in a time hopping impulse radio UWB system based on an
analog non-coherent receiver. The âanalogâ means that the major part of
the multipath combining is implemented by an integrate and dump filter. The
introduced semi-analytical method can help us to easily select the time
hopping codes to ensure the robustness against the multi-user interference
and meanwhile to alleviate the non-coherent combining loss.â The main
contribution of Part I is the proposal of applying fully digital solutions
in non-coherent detection. The proposed digital non-coherent receiver is
based on a time domain analog-to-digital converter, which has a high speed
but a very low resolution to maintain a reasonable power consumption.
Compared to its analog counterpart, itnot only significantly reduces the
non-coherent combining loss but also offers a higher interference
robustness. In particular, the one-bit receiver can effectively suppress
strong multi-user interference and is thus advantageous in separating
simultaneously operating piconets. The fully digital solutions overcome the
difficulty of implementing long analog delay lines and make differential
UWB detection possible. They also facilitate the development of various
digital signal processing techniques such as multi-user detection and
non-coherent multipath combining methods as well as the use of advanced
modulationschemes (e.g., M-ary Walsh modulation).â Furthermore, we
present a novel impulse radio UWB system based on frequency hopping, where
both coherent and non-coherent receivers can be adopted. The key advantage
is that the baseband bandwidth can be considerably reduced (e.g., lower
than 500 MHz), which enables low-complexity implementation of the fully
digital solutions. It opens up various research activities in the
application field of wireless sensor networks.
Part II of this thesis proposes adaptive widely linear reduced-rank
techniques to suppress interferences for high data rate direct sequence UWB
systems, where second-order non-circular signals are used. The reduced-rank
techniques are designed to improve the convergence performance and the
interference robustness especially when the received vector contains a
large number of samples (due to a high sampling rate in UWB systems). The
widely linear processing takes full advantage of the second-order
statistics of the non-circular signals and enhances the estimation
performance. The generic widely linear reduced-rank concept also has a
great potential in the applications of other systems such as Direct
Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA), Multiple Input Multiple
Output (MIMO) system, and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), or
in other areas such as beamforming
Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years
Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010â2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions
A two phase framework for visible light-based positioning in an indoor environment: performance, latency, and illumination
Recently with the advancement of solid state lighting and the application thereof
to Visible Light Communications (VLC), the concept of Visible Light Positioning
(VLP) has been targeted as a very attractive indoor positioning system (IPS) due to
its ubiquity, directionality, spatial reuse, and relatively high modulation bandwidth.
IPSs, in general, have 4 major components (1) a modulation, (2) a multiple access
scheme, (3) a channel measurement, and (4) a positioning algorithm. A number of
VLP approaches have been proposed in the literature and primarily focus on a fixed
combination of these elements and moreover evaluate the quality of the contribution
often by accuracy or precision alone.
In this dissertation, we provide a novel two-phase indoor positioning algorithmic
framework that is able to increase robustness when subject to insufficient anchor luminaries
and also incorporate any combination of the four major IPS components.
The first phase provides robust and timely albeit less accurate positioning proximity
estimates without requiring more than a single luminary anchor using time division
access to On Off Keying (OOK) modulated signals while the second phase provides a
more accurate, conventional, positioning estimate approach using a novel geometric
constrained triangulation algorithm based on angle of arrival (AoA) measurements.
However, this approach is still an application of a specific combination of IPS components.
To achieve a broader impact, the framework is employed on a collection
of IPS component combinations ranging from (1) pulsed modulations to multicarrier
modulations, (2) time, frequency, and code division multiple access, (3) received signal
strength (RSS), time of flight (ToF), and AoA, as well as (4) trilateration and
triangulation positioning algorithms.
Results illustrate full room positioning coverage ranging with median accuracies
ranging from 3.09 cm to 12.07 cm at 50% duty cycle illumination levels. The framework
further allows for duty cycle variation to include dimming modulations and results
range from 3.62 cm to 13.15 cm at 20% duty cycle while 2.06 cm to 8.44 cm at a
78% duty cycle. Testbed results reinforce this frameworks applicability. Lastly, a
novel latency constrained optimization algorithm can be overlaid on the two phase
framework to decide when to simply use the coarse estimate or when to expend more
computational resources on a potentially more accurate fine estimate.
The creation of the two phase framework enables robust, illumination, latency
sensitive positioning with the ability to be applied within a vast array of system
deployment constraints
Realistic chipless RFID: identification and localization
For mass deployment of RFID systems, cheap and accurate item level identification and tracking are profoundly needed. Fortunately, unlike conventional chip-based RFID, chipless RFID systems offers low-cost printable tags holding a better chance to enter the era of penny-cost tags.
This dissertation concentrated on solving three challenges in the detection of the chipless tag inside an indoor environment. The first aspect discussed in the thesis are the chipless RFID clutter removal techniques. In chipless RFID the environmental clutter response is defined as the signal reflected from the environment, that does not interact with the tag. This signal has higher power than the backscattered signal from the tag, rendering the tag signature undetectable. Two algorithms to overcome this problem was used, the first is empty room calibration. The first algorithm is based on subtracting the measurement with the tag from the one without. The second algorithm is Rake receiver using PN sequence; this algorithm requires no pre-measurement calibration.
The second aspect is notch detection and identification which is a critical part of the chipless system. This part is responsible for converting the notches into bits. For effective detection, a windowing operation is proposed, where each window may contain a notch or not. Three novel techniques are implemented to detect the notch. The first is matched filter were a reference notch is compared with the incoming signal. The second is window based singular value decomposition, where a constellation is created to detect not only the existence of a notch but also the bandwidth of the notch. The third notch detection technique is dynamic frequency warping. This technique utilizes non-linear warping to detect the notch and the frequency shifts that occurs on the notch.
The third aspect discussed in the thesis is tag localization. In this aspect, two algorithms are implemented and explained. The first is trilateration which requires three different readers. The second localization algorithm exploits received signal strength and angle of arrival to detect the location of the tag accurately. All the algorithms were tested using a real testbed to validate the reliability of the techniques.
The measurements were done using fabricated tags in an indoor environment using Software Defines Radio (SDR)
Wireless Positioning Applications in Multipath Environments
âAngle of Arrivalâ, AoA) basieren, vorgestellt und untersucht.
âSubspace based Approachesâ, SbA).
In the past several years there has been more growing research on Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The indoor localization is a promising research topic, which is discussed variously in some literatures. However, the most work does not consider an important factor, i.e. the multi-path propagation, which affects the accuracy of the indoor localization. This work dealt with the indoor localization applied in UWB (Ultra Wide Band) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) systems in the case of
multi-path propagation.
To improve the robustness of the applications of localization in the case of multi-path propagation, novel localization algorithms based on the evaluation of the Time of Arrival (ToA), the Received Signal Strength (RSS) and the Angle of Arrival (AoA) were proposed and investigated. In the ToA based localization systems, the detection of shortest signal propagation time plays a critical role. In the case of multi-path
propagation, the Direct Path (DP) needs to be resolved because the DP may be weaker than Multi Path Components (MPC). Thus the novel algorithms for leading edge detection were developed in this work in order to improve the accuracy of localization, namely Joint Leading Edge Detection (JLED), Improved Maximum Likelihood Channel Estimation (IMLCE) and the leading edge detection with Subspace based
Approaches (SbA).
Two criteria were proposed and referenced for the JLED, namely Minimum Area (MA) and Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE). Furthermore, a monocycle-based channel estimator was developed to mitigate the fake LECs (Leading Edge Combination). The estimation error of JLED was theoretically analyzed and simulated for evaluation of the estimator. IMLCE consists of a coarse and a fine estimation step.
The coarse position of the first correlation peak shall be found with the Search Back Algorithms (SBA), which is followed by MLCE-algorithms.
The novel SbA was investigated in a static and a fading channel. In the former case, the iterative algorithm, which combines SbA with SBA, was investigated. In the latter case, the FD-SbA (Frequency Domain - SbA) was proposed, which requires to calculate the covariance matrix in the FD.
For the RSS based localization, fingerprint approach and the novel channel energy based distance estimator were investigated and developed in this dissertation.
Finally, a localization system using AoA estimation and the initial calibration was presented on an 802.11a/g hardware platform. A novel Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) estimator and channel estimator were investigated and developed. The measurement campaigns were made for one, two and four fixed stations, respectivel
Faced with an ever increasing demand of high data-rates and improved adaptability among existing systems, which inturn is resulting in spectrum scarcity, the development of new radio solutions becomes mandatory in order to answer the requirements of these emergent applications. Among the recent innovations in the field of wireless communications, ultra wideband (UWB) has generated significant interest. Impulse based UWB (IR-UWB) is one attractive way of realizing UWB systems, which is characterized by the transmission of sub nanoseconds UWB pulses, occupying a band width up to 7.5 GHz with extremely low power density. This large band width results in several captivating features such as low-complexity low-cost transceiver, ability to overlay existing narrowband systems, ample multipath diversity, and precise ranging at centimeter level due to extremely fine temporal resolution. In this PhD dissertation, we investigate some of the key elements in the realization of an intelligent time-hopping based IR-UWB system. Due to striking resemblance of IR-UWB inherent features with cognitive radio (CR) requirements, acognitive UWB based system is first studied. A CR in its simplest form can be described as a radio, which is aware ofits surroundings and adapts intelligently. As sensing the environment for the availability of resources and then consequently adapting radioâs internal parameters to exploit them opportunistically constitute the major blocks of any CR, we first focus on robust spectrum sensing algorithms and the design of adaptive UWB waveforms for realizing a cognitive UWB radio. The spectrum sensing module needs to function with minimum a-priori knowledge available about the operating characteristics and detect the primary users as quickly as possible. Keeping this in mind, we develop several spectrum sensing algorithms invoking recent results on the random matrix theory, which can provide efficient performance with a few number of samples. Next, we design the UWB waveform using a linear combination of Bsp lines with weight coefficients being optimized by genetic algorithms. This results in a UWB waveform that is spectrally efficient and at the same time adaptable to incorporate the cognitive radio requirements. In the 2nd part of this thesis, some research challenges related to signal processing in UWB systems, namely synchronization and dense multipath channel estimation are addressed. Several low-complexity non-data-aided (NDA) synchronization algorithms are proposed for BPSK and PSM modulations, exploiting either the orthogonality of UWB waveforms or theinherent cyclostationarity of IR-UWB signaling. Finally, we look into the channel estimation problem in UWB, whichis very demanding due to particular nature of UWB channels and at the same time very critical for the coherent Rake receivers. A method based on a joint maximum-likelihood (ML) and orthogonal subspace (OS) approaches is proposed which exhibits improved performance than both of these methods individually.
Machine Learning Tools for Radio Map Estimation in Fading-Impaired Channels
In spectrum cartography, also known as radio map estimation, one constructs maps that provide the value of a given channel metric such as as the received power, power spectral density (PSD), electromagnetic absorption, or channel-gain for every spatial location in the geographic area of interest. The main idea is to deploy sensors and measure the target channel metric at a set of locations and interpolate or extrapolate the measurements. Radio maps nd a myriad of applications in wireless communications such as network planning, interference coordination, power control, spectrum management, resource allocation, handoff optimization, dynamic spectrum access, and cognitive radio. More recently, radio maps have been widely recognized as an enabling technology for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications because they allow autonomous UAVs to account for communication constraints when planning a mission. Additional use cases include radio tomography and source localization.publishedVersio
Ultra-wideband Based Indoor Localization of Mobile Nodes in ToA and TDoA Configurations
Zandian R. Ultra-wideband Based Indoor Localization of Mobile Nodes in ToA and TDoA Configurations. Bielefeld: UniversitÀt Bielefeld; 2019.This thesis discusses the utilization of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in indoor localization scenarios and proposes system setup and evaluates different localization algorithms in order to improve the localization accuracy and stability of such systems in non-ideal conditions of the indoor environment.
Recent developments and advances of technology in the areas of ubiquitous Internet, robotics and internet of things (IoT) have resulted in emerging new application areas in daily life in which localization systems are vital. The significant demand for a robust and accurate localization system that is applicable in indoor areas lacking satellites link, can be sensed. The UWB technology offers accurate localization systems with an accuracy of below 10 cm and covering the range of up to a few hundred meters thanks to their dedicated large bandwidth, modulation technique and signal power.
In this thesis, the technology behind the UWB systems is discussed in detail. In terms of localization topologies, different scenarios with the focus on time-based methods are introduced. The main focus of this thesis is on the differential time of arrival localization systems (TDoA) with unilateral constellation that is suitable for robotic localization and navigation applications.
A new approach for synchronization of TDoA topology is proposed and influence of clock inaccuracies in such systems are thoroughly evaluated. For localization engine, two groups of static and dynamic iterative algorithms are introduced. Among the possible dynamic methods, extended Kalman filter (EKF), Hâ and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) are discussed and meticulously evaluated.
In order to tackle the non-line of sight (NLOS) problem of such systems, for detection stage several solutions which are based on parametric machine learning methods are proposed. Furthermore, for mitigation phase two solutions namely adjustment of measurement variance and innovation term are suggested. Practical results prove the efficiency and high reliability of the proposed algorithms with positive NLOS condition detection rate of more than 87%.
In practical trials, the localization system is evaluated in indoor and outdoor arenas in both line of sight and non-line of sight conditions. The results show that the proposed detection and mitigation methods can be successfully applied for both small and large-scale arenas with the higher performance of the localization filters in terms of accuracy in large-scale scenarios
