Wireless communication systems to date primarily rely on the orthogonality of resources to facilitate the design and implementation, from user access to data transmission. Emerging applications and scenarios in the sixth generation (6G) wireless systems will require massive connectivity and transmission of a deluge of data, which calls for more flexibility in the design concept that goes beyond orthogonality. Furthermore, recent advances in signal processing and learning have attracted considerable attention, as they provide promising approaches to various complex and previously intractable problems of signal processing in many fields. This article provides an overview of research efforts to date in the field of signal processing and learning for next-generation multiple access, with an emphasis on massive random access and non-orthogonal multiple access. The promising interplay with new technologies and the challenges in learning-based NGMA are discussed

Cooperative antenna systems have recently become a hot research topic, as they promise significantly higher spectral efficiency than conventional cellular systems. The gain is acquired by eliminating inter-cell interference (ICI) through coordination of the base antenna transmissions. Recently, distributed organization methods have been suggested. One of the main challenges of the distributed cooperative antenna system is channel estimation for the downlink channel especially when FDD is used. All of the associated base stations in the cooperative area need to know the full channel state information to calculate the corresponding precoding weight matrix. This information has to be transferred from mobile stations to base stations by using uplink resources. As several base stations and several mobile stations are involved in cooperative antenna systems and each base station and mobile station may be equipped with multiple antennas, the number of channel state parameters to be fed back is expected to be big. In this thesis, efficient feedback techniques of the downlink channel state information are proposed for the multi-user multiple-input multiple-output case, targeting distributed cooperative antenna systems in particular. First, a subspace based channel quantization method is proposed which employs a predefined codebook. An iterative codebook design algorithm is proposed which converges to a local optimum codebook. Furthermore, feedback overhead reduction methods are devised exploiting temporal correlation of the channel. It is shown that the proposed adaptive codebook method in conjunction with a data compression scheme achieves a performance close to the perfect channel case, requiring much less feedback overhead compared with other techniques. The subspace based channel quantization method is extended by introducing multiple antennas at the transmitter side and/or at the receiver side and the performance of a regularized block diagonalization (RBD) precoding(/decoding) scheme has been investigated as well as a zero-forcing (ZF) precoding scheme. A cost-efficient decoding matrix quantization method is proposed which can avoid a complex computation at the mobile station while showing only a slight degradation. The thesis is concluded by comparing the proposed feedback methods in terms of their performance, their required feedback overhead, and their computational complexity. The techniques that are developed in this thesis can be useful and applicable for 5G, which is envisioned to support the high granularity/resolution codebook and its efficient deployment schemes. _____________________________________________Performance of wireless communication systems (quantified in terms of transmission rate, power e±ciency or error probability) degrades severely due to fading effects introduced by the shared air-interface. This degradation can be mitigated if channel state information (CSI) is available at the receiver and/or the transmitter side. Full CSI can be assumed when sufficient training allows for essentially perfect channel estimation, while quantized CSI can be used when only the class (cluster or region) that the channel belongs to is known. This dissertation aims at optimally designing and exploiting quantized CSI to minimize transmit-power under rate and error probability constraints. The setup comprises a wireless communication system with channel-adaptive modulation; where the receiver has available perfect CSI while the transmitter has only quantized CSI. In this context, innovative claims from a high-level vantage point pertain to novel schemes with variable complexity, under different channel types shared by single or multiple users. Simulated numerical tests corroborate the analytical claims and reveal that significant power savings result when implementing the proposed schemes. Specific contributions can be summarized as follows: (i) the quantization and adaptive transmission parameters can be obtained as the solution of a judiciously formulated constrained minimization problem; (ii) the channel quantization algorithms developed attain at least a local optimum of the objective function; (iii)the adaptive schemes reach the global optimum; (iv) the required computational complexity per channel realization for the adaptive schemes ranks from moderate to negligible; (v) the amount of feedback transmitters need from the receiver is stunningly small; and (vi) power consumed by adaptive schemes based on quantized CSI is significantly less than that required by non-adaptive alternatives, and closely approaches the power savings achieved by the benchmark perfect transmit-CSI design. These features encourage practical deployment of the proposed schemes that, with moderate computational overhead, offer a significant performance improvement

Adicionalmente, a técnica signal space diversity (SSD) é usada no sistema celular MC-CDMA. Simulações de Monte Carlo corroboram a precisão da análise matemática apresentadaAbstract: A hybrid technique combining code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been proposed as an option for future mobile communication standards. This technique is known as multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), which, besides inheriting the advantages of CDMA and OFDM techniques, also possesses an inherent frequency diversity. Despite being a multiple access technique, MC-CDMA has been typically studied employing single-user detectors in the receiver. Moreover, some works that have studied their performance with multiuser detectors have done so far using only simulations. Furthermore, single cell scenarios are typically considered although mobile systems operate in cellular environments. This dissertation aims to partially complement previous research on MC-CDMA. In general, this work addresses the uplink performance of MC-CDMA systems in terms of the bit error rate (BER) and the cellular spectral efficiency. For this, a cellular system employing fractional frequency reuse (FFR) and soft frequency reuse (SFR) schemes is assumed. Frequency domain interleaving is performed in the transmitter into the user equipments and, multiuser detection and an antenna array are considered in the receivers at the base stations. The transmitter into the user equipments also performs perfect power control. Furthermore, additive white Gaussian noise, path-loss and slow frequency-selective Rayleigh fading are considered in the channel model. The contributions of this dissertation are summarized in the following. Closed-form expressions are derived to evaluate the mean BER of MC-CDMA cellular systems using the multiuser detectors: zero-forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE) and maximum likelihood detector (MU-MLD). In addition, signal space diversity (SSD) is used in the MC-CDMA cellular system. For this, MU-MLD must be employed in the receiver at the base station. An accurate expression to evaluate the mean BER in this scenario is also derived. Moreover, an asymptotic analysis of the BER expressions is performed to obtain further insights of the diversity order and system behavior at the high signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio regime. The computational complexity of the multiuser detectors is also obtained in terms of the number of complex operations performed during the detection process. In particular, MU-MLD is implemented via a sphere decoder (SD) algorithm in order to reduce its complexity. Some techniques are provided in order to further reduce the SD complexity. Finally, an expression to evaluate the mean cellular spectral efficiency of the MC-CDMA system in FFR and SFR scenarios is obtained. This analysis is based on an algorithm that calculates the cell coverage radius for each modulation used in the system, assuming that adaptive modulation is employed. For all analyzed scenarios, BPSK and M-QAM modulations are considered. Monte Carlo simulations corroborate the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysisDoutoradoTelecomunicações e TelemáticaDoutor em Engenharia ElétricaCAPE

Physical-Layer Cooperation in Coded OFDM Relaying Systems

Mobile communication systems nowadays require ever-increasing data rate and coverage of wide areas. One promising approach to achieve this goal is the application of cooperative communications enabled by introducing intermediate nodes known as relays to support the transmission between terminals. By processing and forwarding the receive message at the relays, the path-loss effect between the source and the destination is mitigated. One major limit factor for relay assisted communications is that a relay cannot transmit and receive using the same physical resources. Therefore, a half-duplex constraint is commonly assumed resulting in halved spectral efficiency. To combat this drawback, two-way relaying is introduced, where two sources exchange information with each. On the other hand, due to the physical limitation of the relays, e.g., wireless sensor nodes, it's not possible to implement multiple antennas at one relay, which prohibits the application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. However, when treating multiple relays as a cluster, a virtual antenna array is formed to perform MIMO techniques in a distributed manner. %This thesis aims at designing efficient one-way and two-way relaying schemes. Specifically, existing schemes from the literature are improved and new schemes are developed with the emphasis on coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions. Of special interest is the application of physical-layer network coding (PLNC) for two-phase two-way relaying. In this case, a network coded message is estimated from the superimposed receive signal at the relay using PLNC schemes. The schemes are investigated based on a mutual information analysis and their performance are improved by a newly proposed phase control strategy. Furthermore, performance degradation due to system asynchrony is mitigated depending on different PLNC schemes. When multiple relays are available, novel cooperation schemes allowing information exchange within the relay cluster are proposed that facilitate distributed MIMO reception and transmission. Additionally, smart signaling approaches are presented to enable the cooperation at different levels with the cooperation overhead taken into account adequately in system performance evaluation
