Globalization of both methods is based on entropy. For discretized data sets left and right reducts were computed. For each discretized data set and two data sets, based, respectively, on left and right reducts, we applied ten-fold cross validation using the C4.5 decision tree generation system. Our main objective was to compare the quality of all three types of data sets in terms of an error rate. Additionally, we compared complexity of generated decision trees. We show that reduction of data sets may only increase the error rate and that the decision trees generated from reduced decision sets are not simpler than the decision trees generated from non-reduced data sets

Tensor networks and the numerical renormalization group

The full-density-matrix numerical renormalization group (NRG) has evolved as a systematic and transparent setting for the cal- culation of thermodynamical quantities at arbitrary temperatures within the NRG framework. It directly evaluates the relevant Lehmann representations based on the complete basis sets intro- duced by Anders and Schiller (2005). In addition, specific attention is given to the possible feedback from low energy physics to high energies by the explicit and careful construction of the full thermal density matrix, naturally generated over a distribution of energy shells. Specific examples are given in terms of spectral functions (fdmNRG), time-dependent NRG (tdmNRG), Fermi-Golden rule calculations (fgrNRG), as well as the calculation of plain thermodynamic expectation values. Furthermore, based on the very fact that, by its iterative nature, the NRG eigenstates are naturally described in terms of matrix product states, the language of tensor networks has proven enormously convenient in the description of the underlying algorithmic procedures. This paper therefore also provides a detailed introduction and discussion of the prototypical NRG calculations in terms of their corresponding tensor networks.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures (adapted from habilitation thesis

Determinants of Long-term Economic Development: An Empirical Cross-country Study Involving Rough Sets Theory and Rule Induction

Empirical findings on determinants of long-term economic growth are numerous, sometimes inconsistent, highly exciting and still incomplete. The empirical analysis was almost exclusively carried out by standard econometrics. This study compares results gained by cross-country regressions as reported in the literature with those gained by the rough sets theory and rule induction. The main advantages of using rough sets are being able to classify classes and to discretize. Thus, we do not have to deal with distributional, independence, (log-)linearity, and many other assumptions, but can keep the data as they are. The main difference between regression results and rough sets is that most education and human capital indicators can be labeled as robust attributes. In addition, we find that political indicators enter in a non-linear fashion with respect to growth.Economic growth, Rough sets, Rule induction

Using a unified measure function for heuristics, discretization, and rule quality evaluation in Ant-Miner

Ant-Miner is a classification rule discovery algorithm that is based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) meta-heuristic. cAnt-Miner is the extended version of the algorithm that handles continuous attributes on-the-fly during the rule construction process, while ?Ant-Miner is an extension of the algorithm that selects the rule class prior to its construction, and utilizes multiple pheromone types, one for each permitted rule class. In this paper, we combine these two algorithms to derive a new approach for learning classification rules using ACO. The proposed approach is based on using the measure function for 1) computing the heuristics for rule term selection, 2) a criteria for discretizing continuous attributes, and 3) evaluating the quality of the constructed rule for pheromone update as well. We explore the effect of using different measure functions for on the output model in terms of predictive accuracy and model size. Empirical evaluations found that hypothesis of different functions produce different results are acceptable according to Friedman’s statistical test

Energy performance forecasting of residential buildings using fuzzy approaches

The energy consumption used for domestic purposes in Europe is, to a considerable extent, due to heating and cooling. This energy is produced mostly by burning fossil fuels, which has a high negative environmental impact. The characteristics of a building are an important factor to determine the necessities of heating and cooling loads. Therefore, the study of the relevant characteristics of the buildings, regarding the heating and cooling needed to maintain comfortable indoor air conditions, could be very useful in order to design and construct energy-efficient buildings. In previous studies, different machine-learning approaches have been used to predict heating and cooling loads from the set of variables: relative compactness, surface area, wall area, roof area, overall height, orientation, glazing area and glazing area distribution. However, none of these methods are based on fuzzy logic. In this research, we study two fuzzy logic approaches, i.e., fuzzy inductive reasoning (FIR) and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), to deal with the same problem. Fuzzy approaches obtain very good results, outperforming all the methods described in previous studies except one. In this work, we also study the feature selection process of FIR methodology as a pre-processing tool to select the more relevant variables before the use of any predictive modelling methodology. It is proven that FIR feature selection provides interesting insights into the main building variables causally related to heating and cooling loads. This allows better decision making and design strategies, since accurate cooling and heating load estimations and correct identification of parameters that affect building energy demands are of high importance to optimize building designs and equipment specifications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
