    Background Subtraction in Video Surveillance

    The aim of thesis is the real-time detection of moving and unconstrained surveillance environments monitored with static cameras. This is achieved based on the results provided by background subtraction. For this task, Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) and Kernel density estimation (KDE) are used. A thorough review of state-of-the-art formulations for the use of GMMs and KDE in the task of background subtraction reveals some further development opportunities, which are tackled in a novel GMM-based approach incorporating a variance controlling scheme. The proposed approach method is for parametric and non-parametric and gives us the better method for background subtraction, with more accuracy and easier parametrization of the models, for different environments. It also converges to more accurate models of the scenes. The detection of moving objects is achieved by using the results of background subtraction. For the detection of new static objects, two background models, learning at different rates, are used. This allows for a multi-class pixel classification, which follows the temporality of the changes detected by means of background subtraction. In a first approach, the subtraction of background models is done for parametric model and their results are shown. The second approach is for non-parametric models, where background subtraction is done using KDE non-parametric model. Furthermore, we have done some video engineering, where the background subtraction algorithm was employed so that, the background from one video and the foreground from another video are merged to form a new video. By doing this way, we can also do more complex video engineering with multiple videos. Finally, the results provided by region analysis can be used to improve the quality of the background models, therefore, considerably improving the detection results

    Background Subtraction Approach based on Independent Component Analysis

    In this work, a new approach to background subtraction based on independent component analysis is presented. This approach assumes that background and foreground information are mixed in a given sequence of images. Then, foreground and background components are identified, if their probability density functions are separable from a mixed space. Afterwards, the components estimation process consists in calculating an unmixed matrix. The estimation of an unmixed matrix is based on a fast ICA algorithm, which is estimated as a Newton-Raphson maximization approach. Next, the motion components are represented by the mid-significant eigenvalues from the unmixed matrix. Finally, the results show the approach capabilities to detect efficiently motion in outdoors and indoors scenarios.     Moving object detection using registration for a moving camera platform

    In this research work, an accurate and fast moving object detector that can detect all the moving objects from Unmanned Aerial Platform (UAV) is proposed. Because of the distance of the UAV to the objects and the movement of the platform, object detection is a challenging task. In order to achieve best results with low error, at first the camera motion has to be estimated so, by using the Rosten and Drummond technique the corners is detected and then by using the corners the camera motion is compensated. After motion compensation, by subtracting the registered frame from the reference frame all the moving objects are detected and extracted

    Sensor Selection and Integration to Improve Video Segmentation in Complex Environments

    Background subtraction is often considered to be a required stage of any video surveillance system being used to detect objects in a single frame and/or track objects across multiple frames in a video sequence. Most current state-of-the-art techniques for object detection and tracking utilize some form of background subtraction that involves developing a model of the background at a pixel, region, or frame level and designating any elements that deviate from the background model as foreground. However, most existing approaches are capable of segmenting a number of distinct components but unable to distinguish between the desired object of interest and complex, dynamic background such as moving water and high reflections. In this paper, we propose a technique to integrate spatiotemporal signatures of an object of interest from different sensing modalities into a video segmentation method in order to improve object detection and tracking in dynamic, complex scenes. Our proposed algorithm utilizes the dynamic interaction information between the object of interest and background to differentiate between mistakenly segmented components and the desired component. Experimental results on two complex data sets demonstrate that our proposed technique significantly improves the accuracy and utility of state-of-the-art video segmentation technique. © 2014 Adam R. In particular, different algorithms based on sigma-delta filter have been considered due to their suitability for embedded systems, where computational limitations affect a real-time implementation. A qualitative and a quantitative comparison have been performed among the different algorithms. Obtained results show that the sigma-delta algorithm with confidence measurement exhibits the best performance in terms of adaptation to particular specificities of urban traffic scenes and in terms of computational requirements. A prototype based on an ARM processor has been implemented to test the different versions of the sigma-delta algorithm and to illustrate several applications related to vehicle traffic monitoring and implementation details

    Selective Subtraction: An Extension of Background Subtraction

    Background subtraction or scene modeling techniques model the background of the scene using the stationarity property and classify the scene into two classes of foreground and background. In doing so, most moving objects become foreground indiscriminately, except for perhaps some waving tree leaves, water ripples, or a water fountain, which are typically learned as part of the background using a large training set of video data. Traditional techniques exhibit a number of limitations including inability to model partial background or subtract partial foreground, inflexibility of the model being used, need for large training data and computational inefficiency. In this thesis, we present our work to address each of these limitations and propose algorithms in two major areas of research within background subtraction namely single-view and multi-view based techniques. We first propose the use of both spatial and temporal properties to model a dynamic scene and show how Mapping Convergence framework within Support Vector Mapping Convergence (SVMC) can be used to minimize training data. We also introduce a novel concept of background as the objects other than the foreground, which may include moving objects in the scene that cannot be learned from a training set because they occur only irregularly and sporadically, e.g. a walking person. We propose a selective subtraction method as an alternative to standard background subtraction, and show that a reference plane in a scene viewed by two cameras can be used as the decision boundary between foreground and background. In our definition, the foreground may actually occur behind a moving object. Our novel use of projective depth as a decision boundary allows us to extend the traditional definition of background subtraction and propose a much more powerful framework. Furthermore, we show that the reference plane can be selected in a very flexible manner, using for example the actual moving objects in the scene, if needed. We present diverse set of examples to show that: (i) the technique performs better than standard background subtraction techniques without the need for training, camera calibration, disparity map estimation, or special camera configurations; (ii) it is potentially more powerful than standard methods because of its flexibility of making it possible to select in real-time what to filter out as background, regardless of whether the object is moving or not, or whether it is a rare event or a frequent one; (iii) the technique can be used for a variety of situations including when images are captured using stationary cameras or hand-held cameras and for both indoor and outdoor scenes. We provide extensive results to show the effectiveness of the proposed framework in a variety of very challenging environments

    Segmentation of the face and hands in sign language video sequences using color and motion cues

    Copyright © 2004 IEEEWe present a hand and face segmentation methodology using color and motion cues for the content-based representation of sign language video sequences. The methodology consists of three stages: skin-color segmentation; change detection; face and hand segmentation mask generation. In skin-color segmentation, a universal color-model is derived and image pixels are classified as skin or nonskin based on their Mahalanobis distance. We derive a segmentation threshold for the classifier. The aim of change detection is to localize moving objects in a video sequences. The change detection technique is based on the F test and block-based motion estimation. Finally, the results from skin-color segmentation and change detection are analyzed to segment the face and hands.     Efficient MRF Energy Propagation for Video Segmentation via Bilateral Filters

    Segmentation of an object from a video is a challenging task in multimedia applications. Depending on the application, automatic or interactive methods are desired; however, regardless of the application type, efficient computation of video object segmentation is crucial for time-critical applications; specifically, mobile and interactive applications require near real-time efficiencies. In this paper, we address the problem of video segmentation from the perspective of efficiency. We initially redefine the problem of video object segmentation as the propagation of MRF energies along the temporal domain. For this purpose, a novel and efficient method is proposed to propagate MRF energies throughout the frames via bilateral filters without using any global texture, color or shape model. Recently presented bi-exponential filter is utilized for efficiency, whereas a novel technique is also developed to dynamically solve graph-cuts for varying, non-lattice graphs in general linear filtering scenario. These improvements are experimented for both automatic and interactive video segmentation scenarios. Moreover, in addition to the efficiency, segmentation quality is also tested both quantitatively and qualitatively.
