Comparison of Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms for FM-TV Broadcasting Antenna Array Null Filling
Broadcasting antenna array null filling is a very
challenging problem for antenna design optimization. This paper
compares five antenna design optimization algorithms (Differential
Evolution, Particle Swarm, Taguchi, Invasive Weed, Adaptive
Invasive Weed) as solutions to the antenna array null filling
problem. The algorithms compared are evolutionary algorithms
which use mechanisms inspired by biological evolution, such as
reproduction, mutation, recombination, and selection. The focus of
the comparison is given to the algorithm with the best results,
nevertheless, it becomes obvious that the algorithm which produces
the best fitness (Invasive Weed Optimization) requires very
substantial computational resources due to its random search
nature
Differential evolution with an evolution path: a DEEP evolutionary algorithm
Utilizing cumulative correlation information already existing in an evolutionary process, this paper proposes a predictive approach to the reproduction mechanism of new individuals for differential evolution (DE) algorithms. DE uses a distributed model (DM) to generate new individuals, which is relatively explorative, whilst evolution strategy (ES) uses a centralized model (CM) to generate offspring, which through adaptation retains a convergence momentum. This paper adopts a key feature in the CM of a covariance matrix adaptation ES, the cumulatively learned evolution path (EP), to formulate a new evolutionary algorithm (EA) framework, termed DEEP, standing for DE with an EP. Without mechanistically combining two CM and DM based algorithms together, the DEEP framework offers advantages of both a DM and a CM and hence substantially enhances performance. Under this architecture, a self-adaptation mechanism can be built inherently in a DEEP algorithm, easing the task of predetermining algorithm control parameters. Two DEEP variants are developed and illustrated in the paper. Experiments on the CEC'13 test suites and two practical problems demonstrate that the DEEP algorithms offer promising results, compared with the original DEs and other relevant state-of-the-art EAs
Fast micro-differential evolution for topological active net optimization
This paper studies the optimization problem of topological active net (TAN), which is often seen in image segmentation and shape modeling. A TAN is a topological structure containing many nodes, whose positions must be optimized while a predefined topology needs to be maintained. TAN optimization is often time-consuming and even constructing a single solution is hard to do. Such a problem is usually approached by a ``best improvement local search'' (BILS) algorithm based on deterministic search (DS), which is inefficient because it spends too much efforts in nonpromising probing. In this paper, we propose the use of micro-differential evolution (DE) to replace DS in BILS for improved directional guidance. The resultant algorithm is termed deBILS. Its micro-population efficiently utilizes historical information for potentially promising search directions and hence improves efficiency in probing. Results show that deBILS can probe promising neighborhoods for each node of a TAN. Experimental tests verify that deBILS offers substantially higher search speed and solution quality not only than ordinary BILS, but also the genetic algorithm and scatter search algorithm
A hybrid swarm-based algorithm for single-objective optimization problems involving high-cost analyses
In many technical fields, single-objective optimization procedures in
continuous domains involve expensive numerical simulations. In this context, an
improvement of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, called the Artificial
super-Bee enhanced Colony (AsBeC), is presented. AsBeC is designed to provide
fast convergence speed, high solution accuracy and robust performance over a
wide range of problems. It implements enhancements of the ABC structure and
hybridizations with interpolation strategies. The latter are inspired by the
quadratic trust region approach for local investigation and by an efficient
global optimizer for separable problems. Each modification and their combined
effects are studied with appropriate metrics on a numerical benchmark, which is
also used for comparing AsBeC with some effective ABC variants and other
derivative-free algorithms. In addition, the presented algorithm is validated
on two recent benchmarks adopted for competitions in international conferences.

Efficient Acoustic Simulation for Immersive Media and Digital Fabrication
Sound is a crucial part of our life. Well-designed acoustic behaviors can lead to significant improvement in both physical and virtual interactions. In computer graphics, most existing methods focused primarily on improving the accuracy. It remained underexplored on how to develop efficient acoustic simulation algorithms for interactive practical applications.
The challenges arise from the dilemma between expensive accurate simulations and fast feedback demanded by intuitive user interaction: traditional physics-based acoustic simulations are computationally expensive; yet, for end users to benefit from the simulations, it is crucial to give prompt feedback during interactions.
In this thesis, I investigate how to develop efficient acoustic simulations for real-world applications such as immersive media and digital fabrication. To address the above-mentioned challenges, I leverage precomputation and optimization to significantly improve the speed while preserving the accuracy of complex acoustic phenomena. This work discusses three efforts along this research direction: First, to ease sound designer's workflow, we developed a fast keypoint-based precomputation algorithm to enable interactive acoustic transfer values in virtual sound simulations. Second, for realistic audio editing in 360° videos, we proposed an inverse material optimization based on fast sound simulation and a hybrid ambisonic audio synthesis that exploits the directional isotropy in spatial audios. Third, we devised a modular approach to efficiently simulate and optimize fabrication-ready acoustic filters, achieving orders of magnitudes speedup while maintaining the simulation accuracy. Through this series of projects, I demonstrate a wide range of applications made possible by efficient acoustic simulations
Talking Helps: Evolving Communicating Agents for the Predator-Prey Pursuit Problem
We analyze a general model of multi-agent communication in which all agents communicate simultaneously to a message board. A genetic algorithm is used to evolve multi-agent languages for the predator agents in a version of the predator-prey pursuit problem. We show that the resulting behavior of the communicating multi-agent system is equivalent to that of a Mealy finite state machine whose states are determined by the agentsâ usage of the evolved language. Simulations show that the evolution of a communication language improves the performance of the predators. Increasing the language size (and thus increasing the number of possible states in the Mealy machine) improves the performance even further. Furthermore, the evolved communicating predators perform significantly better than all previous work on similar preys. We introduce a method for incrementally increasing
the language size which results in an effective coarse-to-fine search that significantly reduces the evolution time required to find a solution. We present some observations on the effects of language size, experimental setup, and prey difficulty on the evolved Mealy machines. In particular, we observe that the start state is often revisited, and incrementally increasing the language size results in smaller Mealy machines. Finally, a simple rule is derived that provides a pessimistic estimate on the minimum language size that should be used for any multi-agent problem
