Reconstruction of the 3D Structure of a Building from the 2D Drawings of its Floors
Colloque avec actes et comité de lecture. This article presents our first results in reconstructing the 3D structure of a building using primitives delivered by the analysis of the 2D architectural drawings of its floors. A set of features is extracted from the set of architectural symbols available for each floor. A graph of matching hypothesis between the most pertinent features of two consecutive floors is then constructed. A maximal clique detection algorithm supplies the best set of matches. The geometrical transformation allowing each floor to be aligned with respect to its lower floor is computed from the pairs of matching features. The final 3D model of the building is obtained by heaping the 3D models of the consecutive floors. || Cet article présente nos premiers résultats dans la reconstruction de la structure 3D d'un bâtiment en utilisant les primitives issues de l'analyse des plans architecturaux 2D de ses niveaux. Automatic Structural Scene Digitalization
In this paper, we present an automatic system for the analysis and labeling
of structural scenes, floor plan drawings in Computer-aided Design (CAD)
format. The proposed system applies a fusion strategy to detect and recognize
various components of CAD floor plans, such as walls, doors, windows and other
ambiguous assets. Technically, a general rule-based filter parsing method is
fist adopted to extract effective information from the original floor plan.
Then, an image-processing based recovery method is employed to correct
information extracted in the first step. Our proposed method is fully automatic
and real-time. Such analysis system provides high accuracy and is also
evaluated on a public website that, on average, archives more than ten
thousands effective uses per day and reaches a relatively high satisfaction
rate.Comment: paper submitted to PloS On
Structure from motion systems for architectural heritage. A survey of the internal loggia courtyard of Palazzo dei Capitani, Ascoli Piceno, Italy
We present the results of a point-cloud-based survey deriving from the use of image-based techniques, in particular with multi-image monoscopic digital photogrammetry systems and software, the so-called “structure-from-motion” technique. The aim is to evaluate the advantages and limitations of such procedures in architectural surveying, particularly in conditions that are “at the limit”. A particular case study was chosen: the courtyard of Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, which can be considered the ideal example due to its notable vertical, rather than horizontal, layout. In this context, by comparing and evaluating the different results, we present experimentation regarding this single case study with the aim of identifying the best workflow to realise a complex, articulated set of representations—using 3D modelling and 2D processing—necessary to correctly document the particular characteristics of such an architectural object
Exploiting 2D Floorplan for Building-scale Panorama RGBD Alignment
This paper presents a novel algorithm that utilizes a 2D floorplan to align
panorama RGBD scans. While effective panorama RGBD alignment techniques exist,
such a system requires extremely dense RGBD image sampling. Our approach can
significantly reduce the number of necessary scans with the aid of a floorplan
image. We formulate a novel Markov Random Field inference problem as a scan
placement over the floorplan, as opposed to the conventional scan-to-scan
alignment. The technical contributions lie in multi-modal image correspondence
cues (between scans and schematic floorplan) as well as a novel coverage
potential avoiding an inherent stacking bias. The proposed approach has been
evaluated on five challenging large indoor spaces. To the best of our
knowledge, we present the first effective system that utilizes a 2D floorplan
image for building-scale 3D pointcloud alignment. The source code and the data
will be shared with the community to further enhance indoor mapping research

This paper deals with the specifics and working procedures for 3D digital reconstructions of defunct buildings of rural architecture. The resulting 3D models are to be used for presentation and educational activities intended for the lay and professional public and are based on archival sources - archival 2D metric survey documentation (drawings and photographs), written sources. Another requirement is the possibility of presentation on the internet within a parallel developing web platform. SketchUp 2021 Pro software, extended by plug-ins, is used for the 3D modelling process
Conservación del patrimonio cultural utilizando nuevos métodos de comunicación: la Pagoda de madera de Yingxian, China
[EN] Architectural landmarks that represent a culture’s identity are also sanctuaries for cultural heritage preservation. The tallest and oldest wooden multi-story structure in the world, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda of China is tilting at an ongoing rate that requires an urgency to find solutions to revert the damage. To preserve the evolving humanistic and artistic understandings of ancient Chinese architecture, and to cultivate the scientific reasoning behind ancient Chinese carpentry, new media allows digital and computational methods to replace human users who once manually analyzed data and information from cultural sites and artifacts. This article will exemplify new media tools such as animation via 3D/2D modeling, 3D scanning and virtual reality photography to examine material evidence of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda of China, and the role new media can assist in its fight to sustain its originality since 1056.Highlights: Examination, documentation, research and education of architectural heritage sites using new media methods.Integration of old archives and digital/computational software to represent the outstanding value of the oldest and tallest wooden skyscraper in the world. Improving the knowledge and management of the historical built environment with BIM and ontologies: the case study of the Book Tower
The historical built environment is acknowledged as a valuable material and cultural resource that needs to be preserved. Usually, however, there are difficulties that do not allow to effectively analyze and document it. Difficulties arising from building characteristics (e.g. irregular shape), site characteristics (e.g. particular natural or artificial context) or other exceptional events (e.g. natural disasters) make it impossible to use only traditional theories, tools and techniques. On the contrary, digital technologies give the opportunity to improve and expand the comprehension of complex artifacts. The objective of our research is to elaborate and propose a theoretical and methodological framework to improve the comprehension and management of the historical built environment with digital technologies. The recorded information can be essential to plan and manage a recovery plan and/or a maintenance program taking into consideration also aspects linked to cultural diversity and environmental sustainability. In this paper we will deal mainly with the constructive and relational characteristics of historical buildings. The constructive characteristics point out the constructive system of an artifact (number, type and material of technical elements, etc.), whilst the relational characteristics represent the relations among the internal components of the artifact and other external elements that could be of various kind (persons, places, etc.). To analyze and document these characteristics we used mainly Building Information Management (BIM) software (Revit) and an ontology editor (TopBraid Composer). Revit was used for the digital 3D reconstruction and TopBraid Composer was used to represent and organize the relational characteristics. Both were applied to a case study: the Book Tower in Ghent, Belgium. This is one of the most important historical (20th century) buildings in the city of Ghent. Through the paper we will show the methodology we used, the issues we tackled and possible future developments
Let's Sketch in 360º: spherical perspectives for virtual reality panoramas
Conferência realizada em Stockholm, Sweden de 25–29 julho de 2018In this workshop we will learn how to draw a 360-degree view of our environment using spherical perspective,
and how to visualize these drawings as immersive panoramas by uploading them to virtual reality platforms that
provide an interactive visualization of a 3D reconstruction of the original scene. We shall show how to construct
these drawing in a simple way, using ruler and compass constructions, facilitated by adequate gridding that takes advantage of the symmetry groups of these spherical perspectives. We will consider two spherical perspectives: equirectangular and azimuthal equidistant, with a focus on the former due to its seamless integration with visualization software readily available on social networks. We will stress the relationship between these panoramas and the notion of spherical anamorphosis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
