Advanced technologies and revitalization of the single-family residential architecture from the Polish Socialism Period the examples of realizations

The idea of modernization and reconstruction of the buildings from the socialism epoque is undertaken in many works. Very often however, the subject divides public opinion. Many people are unaware of the architectural potential of those buildings, considering them mainly as evidence of the communistic system. Unfortunately, there is still no protection policy for the modern architectural heritage, which would include objects from the 50s to 80s of the 20th century (monuments protection statute). The article presents the results of the research into the present state of the conservation of selected single family housing types from Polish socialism. The types of housing chosen for the research were realized with the Typical Single Family Residential Catalogue. Projects presented in the catalogue were included into a bank credit program. The types of credits were analyzed by the compliance of the final realization and the original project. The result of the research will attempt to establish the direction of a typical single-family building transformation over the last 20 years. The study will also aim to create the criteria for the evaluation process of modernization such as: technical condition of the building and media, the possibility of adapting a functional scheme to the changing social needs, new building regulations and economics

Factors affecting the visual perception of colour in rural architecture and landscape

The main objective of this article is to systematize and present some factors affecting the visual perception of colour in space, which should always be taken into consideration by planners, architects, as well as investors – in both the analysis and designing of the project. Because of the far reach of the issue the main problems are covered only briefly, focusing more on those elements that are important for the design of the architectural colour in rural areas. Although the detailed study area was limited mainly to the South Polish villages, contemporary colours follow similar rules throughout Poland. Therefore, it seems that this presentation can be a starting point for further research on the impact of these factors on colour in architecture and establishing universal guidelines in this area

The Geography of Religious and Confessional Structures in the Crown of the Polish Kingdom in the Second Half of the Eighteenth Century

The book minutely depicts the territorial organization of religions and confessions in the Crown part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the second half of the eighteenth century. It focuses on the spatial range and variety of the communities in the region, which was a melting pot of many different religions, confessions and denominations. The picture the book paints owes its depth and detail both to the characterization of the borderlands, and to the heterogeneous and homogeneous zones. Prof. Michael Müller: "The book represents a methodologically most innovative, and empirically very rich, contribution to at least three fields of study: historical geography, religious history and historical demography. For the first time, we get a full, and reliable, picture of the churches of all Christian denominations and of the synagogues (and of the religious institutions and organizations behind them) that existed in the lands of the Crown prior to the first partition of Poland.

Leap into Modernity – Political Economy of Growth on the Periphery, 1943–1980

This book describes struggles of different countries and their development after World War II. It presents a panorama of different ideologies of accelerated development, which dominated the world just before the war and in the next 40 years. The author explains why in the 1970s global and local elites began to turn away from the state, exchanging statism for the belief in the «invisible hand of the market» as a panacea for underdevelopment. He focuses not only on the genesis of underdevelopment, but also on the causes of popularity of economic planning, and the advent of neoliberalism in the discourse of development economics. This book evaluates the power of state as a vehicle of progress and focuses in detail on the Soviet Union, China, Poland, Ghana, Tanzania, and South Korea
