Muon tomography: Tracks reconstruction and visualization techniques
The Muon Portal is a project funded by the Italian Ministry of Research, that aims to develop a system able to detect radioactive materials inside containers, to counteract the illegal transfer, by means of muon tomography. This novel technique bases its functioning on the properties of some particles of the secondary cosmic radiation: the muons. These affect the Earth’s surface at a flow rate constant and interact weakly with matter being deflected significantly only when they pass through material with a high atomic number. In this paper the author will focus on issues related to the reconstruction and visualization of tracks within the scanned object, presenting the results of some track reconstruction algorithms such as the POCA and the EM-Likelihood, and integrated techniques of simulation
and visualization of tomographic images in 3D with algorithms based on volume rendering and isosurfaces
Parametric Surfaces for Augmented Architecture representation
Augmented Reality (AR) represents a growing communication channel, responding to the need to expand reality with additional information, offering easy and engaging access to digital data. AR for architectural representation allows a simple interaction with 3D models, facilitating spatial understanding of complex volumes and topological relationships between parts, overcoming some limitations related to Virtual Reality. In the last decade different developments in the pipeline process have seen a significant advancement in technological and algorithmic aspects, paying less attention to 3D modeling generation. For this, the article explores the construction of basic geometries for 3D model’s generation, highlighting the relationship between geometry and topology, basic for a consistent normal distribution. Moreover, a critical evaluation about corrective paths of existing 3D models is presented, analysing a complex architectural case study, the virtual model of Villa del Verginese, an emblematic example for topological emerged problems. The final aim of the paper is to refocus attention on 3D model construction, suggesting some "good practices" useful for preventing, minimizing or correcting topological problems, extending the accessibility of AR to people engaged in architectural representation
3D Data Processing Toward Maintenance and Conservation. The Integrated Digital Documentation of Casa de Vidro
During the last decade, 3D integrated surveys and BIM modelling procedures have greatly improved the overall knowledge on some Brazilian Modernist buildings. In this framework, the Casa de Vidro 3D survey carried out by DIAPReM centre at Ferrara University, beside the important outputs, analysis and researches achieved from the point cloud database processing, was also useful to test several awareness increasing activities in cooperation with local stakeholders.
The first digital documentation test of the Casa de Vidro allowed verifying the feasibility of a full survey on the building towards the restoration and possible placement of new architectures into the garden as an archive-museum of the Lina Bo and P.M. Bardi Foundation. Later, full 3D integrated survey and diagnostic analysis were carried out to achieve the total digital documentation of the house sponsored by the Keeping it Modern initiative of Getty Foundation (Los Angeles). Following its characteristics, the survey had to take into consideration the different architectural features, up to the relationship of architecture and nature.
These 3D documentation activities and the point cloud processing allowed several analysis in a multidisciplinary framework
Shape: A 3D Modeling Tool for Astrophysics
We present a flexible interactive 3D morpho-kinematical modeling application
for astrophysics. Compared to other systems, our application reduces the
restrictions on the physical assumptions, data type and amount that is required
for a reconstruction of an object's morphology. It is one of the first publicly
available tools to apply interactive graphics to astrophysical modeling. The
tool allows astrophysicists to provide a-priori knowledge about the object by
interactively defining 3D structural elements. By direct comparison of model
prediction with observational data, model parameters can then be automatically
optimized to fit the observation. The tool has already been successfully used
in a number of astrophysical research projects.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the "IEEE

3D body scanning and healthcare applications
Developed largely for the clothing industry, 3D body-surface scanners are transforming our ability to accurately measure and visualize a person's body size, shape, and skin-surface area. Advancements in 3D whole-body scanning seem to offer even greater potential for healthcare applications
The 3D nature of a real un-dismantled electrical contact interface
AbstractA 3D contact analysis and modeling suite of tools are developed and introduced in this work. The “3D Contact Map” of an electrical contact interface is presented demonstrating the 3D nature of the contact. It gives information on where the electrical contact spots in a 3D surface profile are located. An X-ray Computer Tomography (CT) technique is used to collect the 3D data to a resolution of around 5μm of a real un-dismantled contact interface for analysis. Previous work by Lalechos and Swingler presented “2D Contact Map” on a 2D contact profile from collected 3D data to a resolution of around 8μm. The main advantages of both 3D and 2D mapping techniques focus on the fact that they are non-destructive and there is no need to dismantle the component of interest. This current work focuses on the 3D mapping technique showing its advantages over the 2D mapping technique. For test purposes, a 16A rated AC single pole switch is scanned after two different current loading tests (0A and 16A). A comparison for the total mechanical area of contact, the number of contact spots and the total contact resistance is conducted using both the 2D and 3D mapping techniques to a resolution of around 5μm
Spectral Mapping Reconstruction of Extended Sources
Three dimensional spectroscopy of extended sources is typically performed
with dedicated integral field spectrographs. We describe a method of
reconstructing full spectral cubes, with two spatial and one spectral
dimension, from rastered spectral mapping observations employing a single slit
in a traditional slit spectrograph. When the background and image
characteristics are stable, as is often achieved in space, the use of
traditional long slits for integral field spectroscopy can substantially reduce
instrument complexity over dedicated integral field designs, without loss of
mapping efficiency -- particularly compelling when a long slit mode for single
unresolved source followup is separately required. We detail a custom
flux-conserving cube reconstruction algorithm, discuss issues of extended
source flux calibration, and describe CUBISM, a tool which implements these
methods for spectral maps obtained with ther Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared
Spectrograph.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted by PAS
