    Point Spread Function Characterization of a Radially Displaced Scatterer Using Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar

    This research effort investigated characterizing the point spread function (PSF) behavior of radially displaced point scatterers using circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR). Thus far, research has been conducted to understand PSF of a scatterer located at the imaging scene center. An analytic closed-form solution has been derived assuming the scatterer is located at the origin of the CSAR imaging geometry. However, it is difficult to derive an analytic PSF solution for a scatterer that is radially displaced from the imaging scene center. Using the back projection image formation algorithm, PSF responses are generated at various point target locations. Consistent with previous studies, the three dimensional PSF for a point target located at the image center is cone shaped and serves as the basis for comparing and characterizing the PSFs of radially displaced scatterers. Simulated results show the impulse response of a radially displaced point scatterer is asymmetric and tends to exhibit increased ellipticity as it moves further from the scene center

    Passive Interfering Method for InSAR Based on Circularly Moving Strong Scatterers

    A novel jamming method based on circularly moving strong scatterers is proposed. The jamming signal model is presented first, and the corresponding imaging results are derived through a range-Doppler algorithm. Detailed analysis shows that the proposed method can decrease the correlation, produce interferometric phase bias, result in failure of phase unwrapping, and reduce the accuracy of the digital elevation model. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Factorized Geometrical Autofocus for Synthetic Aperture Radar Processing

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is a very useful resource for the civilian remote sensing community and for the military. This however presumes that images are focused. There are several possible sources for defocusing effects. For airborne SAR, motion measurement errors is the main cause. A defocused image may be compensated by way of autofocus, estimating and correcting erroneous phase components. Standard autofocus strategies are implemented as a separate stage after the image formation (stand-alone autofocus), neglecting the geometrical aspect. In addition, phase errors are usually assumed to be space invariant and confined to one dimension. The call for relaxed requirements on inertial measurement systems contradicts these criteria, as it may introduce space variant phase errors in two dimensions, i.e. residual space variant Range Cell Migration (RCM). This has motivated the development of a new autofocus approach. The technique, termed the Factorized Geometrical Autofocus (FGA) algorithm, is in principle a Fast Factorized Back-Projection (FFBP) realization with a number of adjustable (geometry) parameters for each factorization step. By altering the aperture in the time domain, it is possible to correct an arbitrary, inaccurate geometry. This in turn indicates that the FGA algorithm has the capacity to compensate for residual space variant RCM. In appended papers the performance of the algorithm is demonstrated for geometrically constrained autofocus problems. Results for simulated and real (Coherent All RAdio BAnd System II (CARABAS II)) Ultra WideBand (UWB) data sets are presented. Resolution and Peak to SideLobe Ratio (PSLR) values for (point/point-like) targets in FGA and reference images are similar within a few percents and tenths of a dB. As an example: the resolution of a trihedral reflector in a reference image and in an FGA image respectively, was measured to approximately 3.36 m/3.44 m in azimuth, and to 2.38 m/2.40 m in slant range; the PSLR was in addition measured to about 6.8 dB/6.6 dB. The advantage of a geometrical autofocus approach is clarified further by comparing the FGA algorithm to a standard strategy, in this case the Phase Gradient Algorithm (PGA)

    The benefits of very low earth orbit for earth observation missions

    Very low Earth orbits (VLEO), typically classified as orbits below approximately 450 km in altitude, have the potential to provide significant benefits to spacecraft over those that operate in higher altitude orbits. This paper provides a comprehensive review and analysis of these benefits to spacecraft operations in VLEO, with parametric investigation of those which apply specifically to Earth observation missions. The most significant benefit for optical imaging systems is that a reduction in orbital altitude improves spatial resolution for a similar payload specification. Alternatively mass and volume savings can be made whilst maintaining a given performance. Similarly, for radar and lidar systems, the signal-to-noise ratio can be improved. Additional benefits include improved geospatial position accuracy, improvements in communications link-budgets, and greater launch vehicle insertion capability. The collision risk with orbital debris and radiation environment can be shown to be improved in lower altitude orbits, whilst compliance with IADC guidelines for spacecraft post-mission lifetime and deorbit is also assisted. Finally, VLEO offers opportunities to exploit novel atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion systems and aerodynamic attitude and orbit control methods. However, key challenges associated with our understanding of the lower thermosphere, aerodynamic drag, the requirement to provide a meaningful orbital lifetime whilst minimising spacecraft mass and complexity, and atomic oxygen erosion still require further research. Given the scope for significant commercial, societal, and environmental impact which can be realised with higher performing Earth observation platforms, renewed research efforts to address the challenges associated with VLEO operations are required

    Monostatic Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Using Commercial WiMAX Transceivers In the License-exempt Spectrum

    The past half-century witnessed an evolution of synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Boosted by digital signal processing (DSP), a variety of SAR imaging algorithms have been developed, in which the wavenumber domain algorithm is mature for airborne SAR and independent of signal waveforms. Apart from the algorithm development, there is a growing interest in how to acquire the raw data of targets’ echoes before the DSP for SAR imaging in a cost-effective way. For the data acquisition, various studies over the past 15 years have shed light on utilizing the signal generated from the ubiquitous broadband wireless technology – orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). However, the purpose of this thesis is to enable commercial OFDM-based wireless systems to work as an airborne SAR sensor. The unlicensed devices of Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) are the first option, owing to their accessibility, similarity and economy. This dissertation first demonstrates the feasibility of applying WiMAX to SAR by discussing their similar features. Despite the similarities they share, the compatibility of the two technologies is undermined by a series of problems resulted from WiMAX transceiver mechanisms and industrial rules for radiated power. In order to directly apply commercial WiMAX base station transceivers in unlicensed band to airborne SAR application, we propose a radio-frequency (RF) front design together with a signal processing means. To be specific, a double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) switch is inserted between an antenna and two WiMAX transceivers for generating pulsed signal. By simulations, the transmitted power of the SAR sensor is lower than 0dBm, while its imaging range can be over 10km for targets with relatively large radar cross section (RCS), such as a ship. Its range resolution is 9.6m whereas its cross-range resolution is finer than 1m. Equipped with the multi-mode, this SAR sensor is further enhanced to satisfy the requirements of diversified SAR applications. For example, the width of the scan-mode SAR’s range swath is 2.1km, over five times the width of other modes. Vital developed Matlab code is given in Appendix D, and its correctness is shown by comparing with the image of chirped SAR. To summarize, the significance of this dissertation is to propose, for the first time, a design of directly leveraging commercial OFDM-based systems for airborne SAR imaging. Compared with existing designs of airborne SAR, it is a promising low-cost solution

    Wide area coverage radar imaging satellite for earth applications

    A preliminary study was made of a radar imaging satellite for earth applications. A side-looking synthetic-aperture radar was considered and the feasibility of obtaining a wide area coverage to reduce the time required to image a given area was investigated. Two basic approaches were examined; low altitude sun-synchronous orbits using a multibeam/multifrequency radar system and equatorial orbits up to near-synchronous altitude using a single beam system. Surveillance and mapping of ice on the Great Lakes was used as a typical application to focus the study effort
