Recommending access points to individual mobile users via automatic group learning
© 2017 IEEE. We consider user to cell association in a heterogeneous network with a mix of LTE/3G and WiFi cells. Individual user preferences are often neglected when a user to cell association decision is made. In this paper we propose use of a recommender system to inform the mapping of users to cells. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed grouped-based user to cell associations for a set of synthetically generated user/cell ratings
Personalised trails and learner profiling within e-learning environments
This deliverable focuses on personalisation and personalised trails. We begin by introducing and defining the concepts of personalisation and personalised trails. Personalisation requires that a user profile be stored, and so we assess currently available standard profile schemas and discuss the requirements for a profile to support personalised learning. We then review techniques for providing personalisation and some systems that implement these techniques, and discuss some of the issues around evaluating personalisation systems. We look especially at the use of learning and cognitive styles to support personalised learning, and also consider personalisation in the field of mobile learning, which has a slightly different take on the subject, and in commercially available systems, where personalisation support is found to currently be only at quite a low level. We conclude with a summary of the lessons to be learned from our review of personalisation and personalised trails
Domino: exploring mobile collaborative software adaptation
Social Proximity Applications (SPAs) are a promising new area for ubicomp software that exploits the everyday changes in the proximity of mobile users. While a number of applications facilitate simple file sharing between co–present users, this paper explores opportunities for recommending and sharing software between users. We describe an architecture that allows the recommendation of new system components from systems with similar histories of use. Software components and usage histories are exchanged between mobile users who are in proximity with each other. We apply this architecture in a mobile strategy game in which players adapt and upgrade their game using components from other players, progressing through the game through sharing tools and history. More broadly, we discuss the general application of this technique as well as the security and privacy challenges to such an approach
Challenges in context-aware mobile language learning: the MASELTOV approach
Smartphones, as highly portable networked computing devices with embedded sensors including GPS receivers, are ideal platforms to support context-aware language learning. They can enable learning when the user is en-gaged in everyday activities while out and about, complementing formal language classes. A significant challenge, however, has been the practical implementation of services that can accurately identify and make use of context, particularly location, to offer meaningful language learning recommendations to users. In this paper we review a range of approaches to identifying context to support mobile language learning. We consider how dynamically changing aspects of context may influence the quality of recommendations presented to a user. We introduce the MASELTOV project’s use of context awareness combined with a rules-based recommendation engine to present suitable learning content to recent immigrants in urban areas; a group that may benefit from contextual support and can use the city as a learning environment
Loud and Trendy: Crowdsourcing Impressions of Social Ambiance in Popular Indoor Urban Places
New research cutting across architecture, urban studies, and psychology is
contextualizing the understanding of urban spaces according to the perceptions
of their inhabitants. One fundamental construct that relates place and
experience is ambiance, which is defined as "the mood or feeling associated
with a particular place". We posit that the systematic study of ambiance
dimensions in cities is a new domain for which multimedia research can make
pivotal contributions. We present a study to examine how images collected from
social media can be used for the crowdsourced characterization of indoor
ambiance impressions in popular urban places. We design a crowdsourcing
framework to understand suitability of social images as data source to convey
place ambiance, to examine what type of images are most suitable to describe
ambiance, and to assess how people perceive places socially from the
perspective of ambiance along 13 dimensions. Our study is based on 50,000
Foursquare images collected from 300 popular places across six cities
worldwide. The results show that reliable estimates of ambiance can be obtained
for several of the dimensions. Furthermore, we found that most aggregate
impressions of ambiance are similar across popular places in all studied
cities. We conclude by presenting a multidisciplinary research agenda for
future research in this domain
Collaborative trails in e-learning environments
This deliverable focuses on collaboration within groups of learners, and hence collaborative trails. We begin by reviewing the theoretical background to collaborative learning and looking at the kinds of support that computers can give to groups of learners working collaboratively, and then look more deeply at some of the issues in designing environments to support collaborative learning trails and at tools and techniques, including collaborative filtering, that can be used for analysing collaborative trails. We then review the state-of-the-art in supporting collaborative learning in three different areas – experimental academic systems, systems using mobile technology (which are also generally academic), and commercially available systems. The final part of the deliverable presents three scenarios that show where technology that supports groups working collaboratively and producing collaborative trails may be heading in the near future
