    Hybrid group recommendations for a travel service

    Recommendation techniques have proven their usefulness as a tool to cope with the information overload problem in many classical domains such as movies, books, and music. Additional challenges for recommender systems emerge in the domain of tourism such as acquiring metadata and feedback, the sparsity of the rating matrix, user constraints, and the fact that traveling is often a group activity. This paper proposes a recommender system that offers personalized recommendations for travel destinations to individuals and groups. These recommendations are based on the users' rating profile, personal interests, and specific demands for their next destination. The recommendation algorithm is a hybrid approach combining a content-based, collaborative filtering, and knowledge-based solution. For groups of users, such as families or friends, individual recommendations are aggregated into group recommendations, with an additional opportunity for users to give feedback on these group recommendations. A group of test users evaluated the recommender system using a prototype web application. The results prove the usefulness of individual and group recommendations and show that users prefer the hybrid algorithm over each individual technique. This paper demonstrates the added value of various recommendation algorithms in terms of different quality aspects, compared to an unpersonalized list of the most-popular destinations

    UniRecSys: A Unified Framework for Personalized, Group, Package, and Package-to-Group Recommendations

    Recommender systems aim to enhance the overall user experience by providing tailored recommendations for a variety of products and services. These systems help users make more informed decisions, leading to greater user satisfaction with the platform. However, the implementation of these systems largely depends on the context, which can vary from recommending an item or package to a user or a group. This requires careful exploration of several models during the deployment, as there is no comprehensive and unified approach that deals with recommendations at different levels. Furthermore, these individual models must be closely attuned to their generated recommendations depending on the context to prevent significant variation in their generated recommendations. In this paper, we propose a novel unified recommendation framework that addresses all four recommendation tasks, namely personalized, group, package, or package-to-group recommendation, filling the gap in the current research landscape. The proposed framework can be integrated with most of the traditional matrix factorization-based collaborative filtering models. The idea is to enhance the formulation of the existing approaches by incorporating components focusing on the exploitation of the group and package latent factors. These components also help in exploiting a rich latent representation of the user/item by enforcing them to align closely with their corresponding group/package representation. We consider two prominent CF techniques, Regularized Matrix Factorization and Maximum Margin Matrix factorization, as the baseline models and demonstrate their customization to various recommendation tasks. Experiment results on two publicly available datasets are reported, comparing them to other baseline approaches that consider individual rating feedback for group or package recommendations.Comment: 25 page

    Recommendation engines make use of machine learning techniques and generally deal with ranking and rating of products/users. With the help of this system we aim to suggest different destinations to users based on their interest and previous visits. Along with recommendations we also aspire to enable users to build travel communities for people sharing similar interests .This shall help travelers with planning ,meeting like-minded people,safety and enthralling experience. As per the analysis done on pre-existing systems we discerned that enabling users to build a community of travelers visiting the same destination is an eccentric attribute proposed. This distinctive attribute of building communities shall be implemented using the basics of clustering algorithms in Machine learning

    INDIVIDUALITY OR CONFORMITY: RECOMMENDATION EXPLOITING COMMUNITY-LEVEL SOCIAL INFLUENCE

    With the increasing prevalence of online businesses and social networking services, a huge volume of data about transaction records and social connections between users is accumulated at an unprecedented speed, which enables us to take advantage of electronic word-of-mouth effect embedded in social networks for precision marketing and social recommendations. Different from existing works on social recommendations, our research focuses on discriminating the community-level social influence of different friend groups to enhance the quality of recommendation. To this end, we propose a novel probabilistic topic model integrating community detection with topic discovery to model user behaviors. Based on this model, a recommendation method taking both individual interests and conformity influence into consideration is developed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model and method, experiments are conducted on two real recommendation applications, and the results demonstrate that the proposed recommendation method exhibits superior performance compared with the state-of-art recommendation methods, and the proposed topic model exhibits good explainablibity of topic semantics and community interests. Furthermore, as some people are more individual interest oriented and some are more conformity oriented demonstrated by the experiments, we explore factors that influence each individual’s conformity tendency, and obtain some meaningful findings

    Probabilistic Personalized Recommendation Models For Heterogeneous Social Data

    Content recommendation has risen to a new dimension with the advent of platforms like Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Dailybooth, and Instagram. Although this uproar of data has provided us with a goldmine of real-world information, the problem of information overload has become a major barrier in developing predictive models. Therefore, the objective of this The- sis is to propose various recommendation, prediction and information retrieval models that are capable of leveraging such vast heterogeneous content. More specifically, this Thesis focuses on proposing models based on probabilistic generative frameworks for the following tasks: (a) recommending backers and projects in Kickstarter crowdfunding domain and (b) point of interest recommendation in Foursquare. Through comprehensive set of experiments over a variety of datasets, we show that our models are capable of providing practically useful results for recommendation and information retrieval tasks

    Applying reranking strategies to route recommendation using sequence-aware evaluation

    Venue recommendation approaches have become particularly useful nowadays due to the increasing number of users registered in location-based social networks (LBSNs), applications where it is possible to share the venues someone has visited and establish connections with other users in the system. Besides, the venue recommendation problem has certain characteristics that differ from traditional recommendation, and it can also benefit from other contextual aspects to not only recommend independent venues, but complete routes or venue sequences of related locations. Hence, in this paper, we investigate the problem of route recommendation under the perspective of generating a sequence of meaningful locations for the users, by analyzing both their personal interests and the intrinsic relationships between the venues. We divide this problem into three stages, proposing general solutions to each case: First, we state a general methodology to derive user routes from LBSNs datasets that can be applied in as many scenarios as possible; second, we define a reranking framework that generate sequences of items from recommendation lists using different techniques; and third, we propose an evaluation metric that captures both accuracy and sequentiality at the same time. We report our experiments on several LBSNs datasets and by means of different recommendation quality metrics and algorithms. As a result, we have found that classical recommender systems are comparable to specifically tailored algorithms for this task, although exploiting the temporal dimension, in general, helps on improving the performance of these techniques; additionally, the proposed reranking strategies show promising results in terms of finding a trade-off between relevance, sequentiality, and distance, essential dimensions in both venue and route recommendation tasksThis work has been funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (reference: TIN2016-80630-P) and by the European Social Fund (ESF), within the 2017 call for predoctoral contract
