Dynamically updated personalized recommendations for broadcast television

    Get PDF
The large number of channels available on television can make the process of searching for the appropriate TV channel cumbersome and time consuming. This disclosure describes techniques to make real-time personalized recommendations for live TV programming, implemented with the user’s permission. The recommendations are based on the application of a trained machine learning model. Upon being turned on, the TV is automatically tuned to a channel showing the program that is identified as being most likely to be watched by the user, chosen from all programs available at that time. Further, the user is shown a dynamically updated personalized shortlist of other channels that are broadcasting programs of likely interest to the user. Further, a notification can be shown to alert the user when a channel other than the one currently being watched starts broadcasting a program the user is likely to find of greater interest that the one on the current channel

Throughout the age of globalization, the internationalization of business and entities grows importance. When considering a mode of internationalization, various different factors come into play that effect how to create a strategy for entering a new market. Regardless of cultures merging to a new global society, each market faces its own new challenges and obstacles coming from one country into the next. When studying the literature on the internationalization of services, a standardized strategy proves nonexistent, with limited scientific and academic the models and theories for the entry mode strategy. Nevertheless throughout the age of globalization, the internationalization of business and entities grows importance. This research will examine which country would prove as the best fit for the launch of Live Forum Foundation and furthermore analyse the risk in launching in that country. The objective of this research is to define what is the best fit internationalization strategy for the organization, foreign market will best sustain the launch of Live Forum TV, and what are the risks and recommendations in launching in that market. Live Forum TV is a television format created by the Foundation headed by Michael Davis. The TV format will be launched on local broadcasting in a foreign market that currently struggles with miscommunication between the government officials and public. The debates discussed on the TV program will prove as a solution for the inefficiencies nations currently face in a budding or developed democratic system. Hong Kong proves as the best-fit market for the internationalization of Live Forum TV as the telecommunication infrastructure of the market is the strongest in the Asia- Pacific region with high penetration of cable TV in households and usage of internetconnecting devices such as smartphones. Most importantly, Hong Kong currently faces a great need for solution to the political gridlock between pro-democratic and pro- Beijing forces that struggle to find a balance on topics such as universal suffrage

Personalized Recommendations of Upcoming Sport Events

Recommender systems have emerged as essential tools for enhancing user engagement and content discovery in various domains, including the sports industry. In the context of sports viewing, personalized recommendations have become increasingly significant, enabling users to easily connect with their favorite sports teams, explore new content, and broaden their viewing preferences. Collaborative filtering (CF) stands out as a popular recommendation algorithm that analyzes the similarities and patterns in user-item interactions. By examining the behavior and preferences of a group of users, CF identifies similar users and recommends items that have been positively received by those with similar tastes. Applying CF to sports recommendations presents an opportunity to introduce users to new sports events enjoyed by their peers. However, recommending upcoming live sports events introduces unique challenges, such as limited availability and the need to strike a balance between catering to users' favorite sports and introducing them to new content. This master thesis aims to address these challenges through the development of a personalized recommendation system for upcoming sports events using CF. The system will analyze user viewing history to provide tailored recommendations that facilitate content discovery and enable users to easily locate their preferred sports events. The research objectives include identifying the most suitable collaborative filtering model for sports content recommendation, investigating the factors that influence sports fans' preferences for specific types of live sports events, and evaluating the effectiveness of personalized recommendations compared to non-personalized approaches. The proposed system is implemented and A/B tested on TV 2 Play, one of Norway's largest digital streaming platforms, with the ultimate goal of enhancing user experience and engagement by delivering personalized and relevant recommendations for sports content. This research contributes to the field by proposing a novel collaborative filtering recommender for sports based on user viewing sessions, exploring effective strategies for recommending upcoming live sports events, and assessing the system's performance in terms of accuracy and user satisfaction.Masteroppgave i informasjonsvitenskapINFO390MASV-INF

The FĂschlĂĄr-News-Stories system: personalised access to an archive of TV news

The “Físchlár” systems are a family of tools for capturing, analysis, indexing, browsing, searching and summarisation of digital video information. Físchlár-News-Stories, described in this paper, is one of those systems, and provides access to a growing archive of broadcast TV news. Físchlár-News-Stories has several notable features including the fact that it automatically records TV news and segments a broadcast news program into stories, eliminating advertisements and credits at the start/end of the broadcast. Físchlár-News-Stories supports access to individual stories via calendar lookup, text search through closed captions, automatically-generated links between related stories, and personalised access using a personalisation and recommender system based on collaborative filtering. Access to individual news stories is supported either by browsing keyframes with synchronised closed captions, or by playback of the recorded video. One strength of the Físchlár-News-Stories system is that it is actually used, in practice, daily, to access news. Several aspects of the Físchlár systems have been published before, bit in this paper we give a summary of the Físchlár-News-Stories system in operation by following a scenario in which it is used and also outlining how the underlying system realises the functions it offers

Context-aware LDA: Balancing Relevance and Diversity in TV Content Recommenders

In the vast and expanding ocean of digital content, users are hardly satisïŹed with recommended programs solely based on static user patterns and common statistics. Therefore, there is growing interest in recommendation approaches that aim to provide a certain level of diversity, besides precision and ranking. Context-awareness, which is an eïŹ€ective way to express dynamics and adaptivity, is widely used in recom-mender systems to set a proper balance between ranking and diversity. In light of these observations, we introduce a recommender with a context-aware probabilistic graphi-cal model and apply it to a campus-wide TV content de-livery system named “Vision”. Within this recommender, selection criteria of candidate ïŹelds and contextual factors are designed and users’ dependencies on their personal pref-erence or the aforementioned contextual inïŹ‚uences can be distinguished. Most importantly, as to the role of balanc-ing relevance and diversity, ïŹnal experiment results prove that context-aware LDA can evidently outperform other al-gorithms on both metrics. Thus this scalable model can be ïŹ‚exibly used for diïŹ€erent recommendation purposes
