    Human Body Posture Recognition Approaches: A Review

    Human body posture recognition has become the focus of many researchers in recent years. Recognition of body posture is used in various applications, including surveillance, security, and health monitoring. However, these systems that determine the body’s posture through video clips, images, or data from sensors have many challenges when used in the real world. This paper provides an important review of how most essential ‎ hardware technologies are ‎used in posture recognition systems‎. These systems capture and collect datasets through ‎accelerometer sensors or computer vision. In addition, this paper presents a comparison ‎study with state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy. We also present the advantages and ‎limitations of each system and suggest promising future ideas that can increase the ‎efficiency of the existing posture recognition system. Finally, the most common datasets ‎applied in these systems are described in detail.     A 3D Human Posture Approach for Activity Recognition Based on Depth Camera

    Human activity recognition plays an important role in the context of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), providing useful tools to improve people quality of life. This work presents an activity recognition algorithm based on the extraction of skeleton joints from a depth camera. The system describes an activity using a set of few and basic postures extracted by means of the X-means clustering algorithm. A multi-class Support Vector Machine, trained with the Sequential Minimal Optimization is employed to perform the classification. The system is evaluated on two public datasets for activity recognition which have different skeleton models, the CAD-60 with 15 joints and the TST with 25 joints. The proposed approach achieves precision/recall performances of 99.8 % on CAD-60 and 97.2 %/91.7 % on TST. The results are promising for an applied use in the context of AAL

    Structure from Recurrent Motion: From Rigidity to Recurrency

    This paper proposes a new method for Non-Rigid Structure-from-Motion (NRSfM) from a long monocular video sequence observing a non-rigid object performing recurrent and possibly repetitive dynamic action. Departing from the traditional idea of using linear low-order or lowrank shape model for the task of NRSfM, our method exploits the property of shape recurrency (i.e., many deforming shapes tend to repeat themselves in time). We show that recurrency is in fact a generalized rigidity. Based on this, we reduce NRSfM problems to rigid ones provided that certain recurrency condition is satisfied. Given such a reduction, standard rigid-SfM techniques are directly applicable (without any change) to the reconstruction of non-rigid dynamic shapes. To implement this idea as a practical approach, this paper develops efficient algorithms for automatic recurrency detection, as well as camera view clustering via a rigidity-check. Experiments on both simulated sequences and real data demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Since this paper offers a novel perspective on rethinking structure-from-motion, we hope it will inspire other new problems in the field.Comment: To appear in CVPR 201

    This thesis proposes various novel approaches for improving the performance of automatic 2D human pose tracking system including multi-scale strategy, mid-level spatial dependencies to constrain more relations of multiple body parts, additional constraints between symmetric body parts and the left/right confusion correction by a head orientation estimator. These proposed approaches are employed to develop a complete human pose tracking system. The experimental results demonstrate significant improvements of all the proposed approaches towards accuracy and efficiency

    Recognizing Human Motion Using Eigensequences

    This paper presents a novel method for motion recognition. The approach is based on 3D motion data. The captured motion is divided into sequences, which are sets of contiguous postures over time. Each sequence is then classified into one of the recognizable action classes by means of a PCA based method. The proposed approach is able to perform automatic recognition of movements containing more than one class of action. The advantages of this technique are that it can be easily extended to recognize many action classes and, most of all, that the recognition process is real-time. In order to fully understand the capabilities of the proposed method, the approach has been implemented and tested in a virtual environment.
