    Kleene-Schützenberger and Büchi Theorems for Weighted Timed Automata

    In 1994, Alur and Dill introduced timed automata as a simple mathematical model for modelling the behaviour of real-time systems. In this thesis, we extend timed automata with weights. More detailed, we equip both the states and transitions of a timed automaton with weights taken from an appropriate mathematical structure. The weight of a transition determines the weight for taking this transition, and the weight of a state determines the weight for letting time elapse in this state. Since the weight for staying in a state depends on time, this model, called weighted timed automata, has many interesting applications, for instance, in operations research and scheduling. We give characterizations for the behaviours of weighted timed automata in terms of rational expressions and logical formulas. These formalisms are useful for the specification of real-time systems with continuous resource consumption. We further investigate the relation between the behaviours of weighted timed automata and timed automata. Finally, we present important decidability results for weighted timed automata

    Der Theorietag ist die Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe Automaten und Formale Sprachen der Gesellschaft für Informatik und fand erstmals 1991 in Magdeburg statt. Seit dem Jahr 1996 wird der Theorietag von einem eintägigen Workshop mit eingeladenen Vorträgen begleitet. Die Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe Logik in der Informatik der Gesellschaft für Informatik fand erstmals 1993 in Leipzig statt. Im Laufe beider Jahrestagungen finden auch die jährliche Fachgruppensitzungen statt. In diesem Jahr wird der Theorietag der Fachgruppe Automaten und Formale Sprachen erstmalig zusammen mit der Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe Logik in der Informatik abgehalten. Organisiert wurde die gemeinsame Veranstaltung von der Arbeitsgruppe Zuverlässige Systeme des Instituts für Informatik an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel vom 4. bis 7. Oktober im Tagungshotel Tannenfelde bei Neumünster. Während des Tre↵ens wird ein Workshop für alle Interessierten statt finden. In Tannenfelde werden • Christoph Löding (Aachen) • Tomás Masopust (Dresden) • Henning Schnoor (Kiel) • Nicole Schweikardt (Berlin) • Georg Zetzsche (Paris) eingeladene Vorträge zu ihrer aktuellen Arbeit halten.     Evaluating Ethereum development environments

    Abstract. Blockchain technology has been one of the hottest buzzwords in the early 2020s and one of the main reasons for that is the interest towards decentralized applications, which use the smart contracts located in the blockchain to serve the application’s business logic. Ethereum is the biggest platform for decentralized applications, and this study focuses on exploring what kind of support developers need for developing Ethereum based products. This is done by first examining the state of the art by conducting a semi-systematic literature review, followed by using a customized DESMET evaluation method, in which the requirements are mapped as features along with the evaluation criteria, to see how well the currently popular Ethereum development environments provide support for the developers. A total of three development environments by the names of Hardhat, Truffle, and Brownie are evaluated, and the achieved results are analysed to find the differences in the level of support they offer for the developers. At the end the findings of the study are summarized, the experiences from the customized DESMET evaluation method are reported, the validity towards the achieved results are inspected, and the possible directions to continue the work is discussed

    Subshifts with Simple Cellular Automata

    A subshift is a set of infinite one- or two-way sequences over a fixed finite set, defined by a set of forbidden patterns. In this thesis, we study subshifts in the topological setting, where the natural morphisms between them are ones defined by a (spatially uniform) local rule. Endomorphisms of subshifts are called cellular automata, and we call the set of cellular automata on a subshift its endomorphism monoid. It is known that the set of all sequences (the full shift) allows cellular automata with complex dynamical and computational properties. We are interested in subshifts that do not support such cellular automata. In particular, we study countable subshifts, minimal subshifts and subshifts with additional universal algebraic structure that cellular automata need to respect, and investigate certain criteria of ‘simplicity’ of the endomorphism monoid, for each of them. In the case of countable subshifts, we concentrate on countable sofic shifts, that is, countable subshifts defined by a finite state automaton. We develop some general tools for studying cellular automata on such subshifts, and show that nilpotency and periodicity of cellular automata are decidable properties, and positive expansivity is impossible. Nevertheless, we also prove various undecidability results, by simulating counter machines with cellular automata. We prove that minimal subshifts generated by primitive Pisot substitutions only support virtually cyclic automorphism groups, and give an example of a Toeplitz subshift whose automorphism group is not finitely generated. In the algebraic setting, we study the centralizers of CA, and group and lattice homomorphic CA. In particular, we obtain results about centralizers of symbol permutations and bipermutive CA, and their connections with group structures.Siirretty Doriast

    Technology-based service experience: Creation and evaluation of emergency ambulance services

    With the rapid development of communication technology and the spreading of mobile devices, mobile applications are involved in people’s everyday life. Technology provides designers with both challenges and possibilities. Service designers also embrace technology to create service systems for better experiences. This study investigates how to improve the emergency ambulance service experience in Rovaniemi with a technology-based service system. A mobile application was designed and tested. The cyclical action research process includes an online questionnaire survey (N=23), semi-structured interviews (N=6) as generative research, and a service prototyping workshop (N=4) as evaluative research. The results from generative research indicate the need for information communication during emergencies, while the results from evaluative research provided more insights for future iteration design. Based on the research data and design outcomes, the study concludes a framework of how to design a technology-based service system by combining service design and UX design

    Advanced Augmentative and Alternative Communication System Based in Physiological Control

    Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (DCP) is mainly characterized by alterations in muscle tone and involuntary movements. Therefore, these people present with difficulties in coordination and movement control, which makes walking difficult and affects their posture when seated. Additionally, their cognitive performance varies between being completely normal and severe mental retardation. People with DCP were selected as the objective of this thesis due to their multiple and complex limitations (speech problems and motor control) and because their capabilities have a great margin for improvement thanks to physiological control systems. Given their communication difficulties, some people with DCP have good motor con-trol and can communicate with written language. However, most have difficulty using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. People with DCP gen-erally use concept boards to indicate the idea they want to communicate. However, most communication solutions available today are based on proprietary software that makes it difficult to customize the concept board and this type of control system. This is the motivation behind this thesis, with the aim of creating an interface with characteristics, able to be adapted to the user needs and limitations. Thus, this thesis proposes an Augmentative and Alternative Communication System for people with DCP based on physiological control. In addition, an innovative system for direct con-trol of concept boards with EMG is proposed. This control system is based on a physi-cal model that reproduces the muscular mechanical response (stiffness, inertia and viscosity). It allows for a selection of elements thanks to small pulses of EMG signal with sensors on a muscle with motor control. Its main advantage is the possibility of correcting errors during selection associated with uncontrolled muscle impulses, avoid-ing sustained muscle effort and thus reduced fatigue.La Parálisis Cerebral de tipo Discinésica (DCP) se caracteriza principalmente por las alteraciones del tono muscular y los movimientos involuntarios. Por ello, estos pacientes presentan dificultades en la coordinación y en el control de movimientos, lo cual les dificulta el caminar y afecta su postura cuando están sentados. Cabe resaltar que la capacidad cognitiva de las personas con DCP puede variar desde completamente normal, hasta un retraso mental severo. Las personas con DCP han sido seleccionadas como objetivo de esta tesis ya el margen de mejora de sus capacidades es amplio gracias a sistemas de control fisiológico, debido a sus múltiples y complejas limitaciones (problemas de habla y control motor). Debido a sus dificultades de comunicación, algunas personas con DCP se pueden comunicar con lenguaje escrito, siempre y cuando tenga un buen control motor. Sin embargo, la mayoría tienen dificultades para usar sistemas de Comunicación Aumentativos y Alternativos (AAC). De hecho, las personas con DCP utilizan generalmente tableros de conceptos para indicar la idea que quieren transmitir. Sin embargo, la mayoría las soluciones de comunicación disponibles en la actualidad están basadas en software propietario que hacen difícil la personalización del tablero de conceptos y el tipo de sistema de control. Es aquí donde surge esta tesis, con el objetivo de crear una interfaz con esas características, capaz de adaptarse a las necesidades y limitaciones del usuario. De esta forma, esta tesis propone un sistema de comunicación aumentativo y alternativo para personas con DCP basado en control fisiológico. Además, se propone un Sistema innovador de control directo sobre tableros de conceptos basado en EMG. Este Sistema de control se basa en un modelo físico que reproduce la respuesta mecánica muscular (basado en parámetros como Rigidez, Inercia y Viscosidad), permitiendo la selección de elementos gracias a pequeños pulsos de señal EMG con sensores sobre un músculo con control motor. Sus principales ventajas son la posibilidad de corregir errores durante la selección asociado a los impulsos musculares no controlados, evitar el esfuerzo muscular mantenido para alcanzar un nivel y reducir la fatiga.La Paràlisi Cerebral de tipus Discinèsica (DCP) es caracteritza principalment per les alteracions del to muscular i els moviments involuntaris. Per açò, aquests pacients presenten dificultats en la coordinació i en el control de moviments, la qual cosa els dificulta el caminar i afecta la seua postura quan estan asseguts. D'aquesta forma, aquesta tesi proposa un sistema de comunicació augmentatiu i alternatiu per a persones amb DCP basat en control fisiològic.     Crowdsourced network measurements: Benefits and best practices

    Network measurements are of high importance both for the operation of networks and for the design and evaluation of new management mechanisms. Therefore, several approaches exist for running network measurements, ranging from analyzing live traffic traces from campus or Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks to performing active measurements on distributed testbeds, e.g., PlanetLab, or involving volunteers. However, each method falls short, offering only a partial view of the network. For instance, the scope of passive traffic traces is limited to an ISP’s network and customers’ habits, whereas active measurements might be biased by the population or node location involved. To complement these techniques, we propose to use (commercial) crowdsourcing platforms for network measurements. They permit a controllable, diverse and realistic view of the Internet and provide better control than do measurements with voluntary participants. In this study, we compare crowdsourcing with traditional measurement techniques, describe possible pitfalls and limitations, and present best practices to overcome these issues. The contribution of this paper is a guideline for researchers to understand when and how to exploit crowdsourcing for network measurements

    Competing on digitalization transformation: The relationship between enterprise resource planning, management control systems, and dynamic capabilities

    This thesis examines the impact of enterprise resource planning (ERP) on the use of management control systems (MCS) in developing dynamic capabilities (DC) in China’s modern manufacturers. Over the recent ten years, China has been reforming its economic structure through the digital transformation that promotes productivity, expands the market size and customer bases, and stimulates economic growth. Existing accounting-IT studies have two major gaps that inhibit us from understanding the impact of digital transformation. First, they do not examine the strategic impact of digitalization-based accounting, but existing accounting research has recognized the importance of studying the strategic impact of accounting (e.g., Henri 2006; Marginson 2002; Mundy 2010; Pešalj et al. 2018). Second, they focus on outdated technologies, but the digital transformation that aims to source competitive advantage forces Chinese manufacturers to reconsider using new digital technologies (e.g., Clouding, Big data, and advanced ERP) and abandon the old ways. This thesis fulfils the gaps by addressing the three most critical frontier MCS research issues, namely, the strategic role of MCS at the capability level (e.g., Henri 2006), the effective MCS configurations (e.g., Grabner and Moers 2013; Sandelin 2008), and the MCS complementarity (e.g., Adler and Chen 2011; Chenhall and Moers 2015). Subsequently, I bring these three issues into the discussion of how manufacturers can steer the digital transformation by making an ERP upgrade in three core business contexts, respectively (i.e., customer relationship management, material resource management, and integration of production and research and design). An in-depth single case study is undertaken to explore the MCS change after an ERP upgrade in three core contexts of DC that academics consider necessary to theorize and analyze the digital transformation process: three building block routines of DC (i.e., sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring routines), resource reconfiguration, and resource orchestration. Further, the thesis adopts three theories to seek the generative process, ii forms, and relations of the MCS changes, and the relation between MCS changes, ERP and DC. Drawing on the organizational routine theory, I reveal that the MCS changes that improve the three routines are produced through enhancing information connection at the artifact aspect, action pattern abstraction at the ostensive aspect, and bottom penetration at the performative aspect. Adopting the notion of studying MCS as a package, I find that the MCS changes that support resource reconfiguration actions lie within three forms of MCS configurations producing varying levels of visibility, recognizability, and controllability of organizational actions and resources. Finally, guided by levers of control, I discover that the MCS changes involve shifting complementary relations between different MCS practices, and senior management involvement determines the leveraging effect of the shifting complementary relation on resource orchestration. This thesis empirically contributes to the critical understanding of how information technology is “simultaneously a challenge and a resource for management control” (Dechow et al. 2006, p. 625) by tracing the generative process, forms, and relations of the MCS changes in the context of growing demand in the ERP upgrade in China. Also, this thesis theoretically contributes to the theory of organizational routine, the notion of studying MCS as a package, and the theory of levers of control by further extracting the constructs involved within the routine-in-use in the accounting context, refining how the MCS configuration forms may vary, and identifying the shifting nature of the complementary relations between the control levers. Finally, the findings of this thesis provide practical implications of how accounting practices can support mobilizing organizational resources to materialize specific DCs effectively and benefit from the digital transformation
