Reclamation: Taking Back Control of Words

    Get PDF
Reclamation is the phenomenon of an oppressed group repurposing language to its own ends. A case study is reclamation of slur words. Popa-Wyatt and Wyatt (2018) argued that a slurring utterance is a speech act which performs a discourse role assignment. It assigns a subordinate role to the target, while the speaker assumes a dominant role. This pair of role assignments is used to oppress the target. Here I focus on how reclamation works and under what conditions its benefits can stabilise. I start by reviewing the data and describing preconditions and motivations for reclamation. Can reclamation be explained in the same basic framework as regular slurring utterances? I argue that it can. I also identify some features that must be a prediction of any theory of reclamation. I conclude that reclamation is an instance of a much broader class of acts we do with words to change the distribution of power: it begets power, but it also requires it

RECLAMATION THE BEACH OF SANUR: ECONOMIC AND SOCIA-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE BALINESE COMMUNITY

    Get PDF
This article is based on a research impact of beach reclamation in relation to the economic and socio-cultural social of the people in the Sanur tourism area. The research is a combination of quantitative and qualitative data, with social economics approach. The data were collected using proportional stratified random sampling derived from interviews and observations, as well as data collected from publications. The number of respondent covered is 100.Beach reclamation which has been done in the Sanur tourism area has been able to give new job opportunities to the local people. But, until now the reclamation cannot significantly increase the earnings of locals. The beach reclamation work has given positive cultural and social impacts to the people of Sanur. The impact have been felt, among others, ease of religious, cultural and sports activities. Keywords : Reclamation impact, economic and cultural socia

Reclamation Laws and Costs of Strip Mined Land in North Dakota

    Get PDF
Coal is becoming more important as a source of energy. There are16 billion tons of economically surface minable coal in North Dakota underlying 700,000 acres. The state has a comprehensive reclamation law; mining cannot be undertaken unless reclamation can be successfully completed. This report presents an overview of reclamation legislation passed in North Dakota, and estimates of reclamation costs are given.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Environmental Dynamics in Animal Waste Reclamation in the Scaling up of Livestock in Thailand

    Get PDF
Thailand has seen a scaling up of pig production in numbers and structure. Nonetheless, in-house separation and agricultural reclamation of pig solid waste are common practice. Waste reclamation is not taking place under small-scale farming and its environmental dynamics cannot be simply understood as a direct projection to larger scales. Scaling up has transformed the environmental significance of waste reclamation, including waste transfer from livestock to agriculture farmers. Waste transfer benefits pig farmers by trade and removal of waste by agriculture and aquaculture farmers and is key to the environmental dynamics of pig production. However, waste reclamation is not clearly defined as a management option in environmental frameworks. Waste management is mainly addressed as in-farm wastewater with limited attention to agro-environmental values of present practices. To recognise present practices in agro-environmental policies this thesis suggests a descriptive strategy focused on the transfer of waste. Such strategy would avoid command-and-control norms, avoid conflicting with an environmental culture centered in biogas technology and support knowledge transfer in agriculture. A focus on waste transfer from animal farms to agriculture [and aquaculture] plots is interpreted as off-site waste management. Off-site waste management calls for the inclusion of geographical variables beyond animal farms. This leads to an extended area of environmental influence (EAEI). Resulting environmental dynamics allows an interpretation of environment beyond resource in classical agricultural geography to a connotation where environment is also significant to agriculture and livestock because of the impacts from production. The recognition of reclamation practices and, consequently, of the integral environmental dynamics, and hence the connotation of environment, would contribute to connect livestock with agriculture through environmental geography. Intensive livestock is then defined as distribution and not location. Formalisation of reclamation practices entails the acknowledgment of agro-ecological cycles in livestock

The study of the disturbed natural complexes evolution processes is important for the development of the most effective and rational methods of reclamation. The restoration of vegetation is one of the most informative components of ecosystems. Plant complexes, which have been formed during self-establishment, are an integral indicator of the dumps suitability degree for biological reclamation

The Feasibility of Reclaiming Shell Material from Investment Casting

    Get PDF
This report examines the feasibility of investment shell component reclamation. Shell material components and their compositions are investigated with an industry survey, a study of the available literature, and analysis of specimen shell materials. physical properties and factors related to the reclamation and reuse of shell materials are described. Well known mineral processing methods are capable of producing concentrates of the various shell components. The theory and techniques of some applicable processes are discussed to assist with the development of reclamation operations. The recommended methods are; comminution by roll crushing, component concentration by screening, gravity settling or heavy medium separation. Aluminosilicate stucco (a major component of many investment shells) can be recovered in a form suitable for reuse as backup stucco. Zircon (a minor component in many shell compositions) -can be concentrated in an impure form, and subsequent caustic liberation treatments can remove the intermixed silica phases. Reuse of such zircon in investment casting may be possible but will require careful qualification testing. Fused and crystalline silica (major components of most shell compositions) are not reusable for investment casting. The feasibility of reclamation will be influenced by individual foundry choices of materials, composition and shell practice.HWRIC Project No. RRT-10NTIS PB92-16219

THE USE OF PRETREATMENT OF PLANT SEEDS TO OVERCOME THE PHYTOTOXICITY OF MINE WASTE DUMPS DURING THEIR BIOLOGICAL RECLAMATION

Donbass is one of the oldest and largest coal mining regions in Ukraine and the world. For today there are more than 1300 dumps in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the main part of which are located within the cities. To reduce the pollution of the atmosphere and improve the sanitary state of the cities, the dump reclamation is carried out. Biological reclamation provides creation of plant communities for decorative and sanitary protective purposes
