Utilización de los sistemas de diálogo hablado para el acceso a la información en diferentes dominios

Por este motivo, un interés histórico dentro del campo de las Tecnologías del Habla ha sido utilizar estas tecnologías en aplicaciones reales, especialmente en aplicaciones que permitan a una persona utilizar su voz para obtener información mediante la interacción directa con una máquina o para controlar un determinado sistema. El objetivo es disponer de sistemas que faciliten la comunicación persona-máquina del modo más natural posible, es decir, a través de la conversación. En esta comunicación se resumen los resultados de la aplicación de estas tecnologías para el desarrollo de diferentes sistemas de diálogo en los que la interacción entre el usuario y el sistema se lleva a cabo mediante habla espontánea en castellano. Para su implementación se ha primado la utilización de diferentes herramientas de software libre para el reconocimiento automático del habla, compresión del lenguaje natural, gestión del diálogo y síntesis de texto a voz. De este modo, el objetivo principal de la comunicación es presentar las principales ventajas que proporcionan los sistemas de diálogo para facilitar el acceso a diferentes servicios dentro de dominios semánticos restringidos, qué posibilidades brinda el uso de herramientas de software libre para su implementación y su evaluación en diferentes casos concretos de aplicación

An automatic dialog simulation technique to develop and evaluate interactive conversational agents

During recent years, conversational agents have become a solution to provide straightforward and more natural ways of retrieving information in the digital domain. In this article, we present an agent-based dialog simulation technique for learning new dialog strategies and evaluating conversational agents. Using this technique, the effort necessary to acquire data required to train the dialog model and then explore new dialog strategies is considerably reduced. A set of measures has also been defined to evaluate the dialog strategy that is automatically learned and to compare different dialog corpora. We have applied this technique to explore the space of possible dialog strategies and evaluate the dialogs acquired for a conversational agent that collects monitored data from patients suffering from diabetes. The results of the comparison of these measures for an initial corpus and a corpus acquired using the dialog simulation technique show that the conversational agent reduces the time needed to complete the dialogs and improve their quality, thereby allowing the conversational agent to tackle new situations and generate new coherent answers for the situations already present in an initial model.This work was supported in part by Projects MINECO TEC2012-37832-C02-01, CICYT TEC2011-28626-C02-02, CAM CONTEXTS S2009/TIC-1485Publicad

Investigating digital video applications in distance learning

The paper gives a brief overview of the use of digital video in distance education, the background to The Open University's Digital Video Applications (DiVA) Project, the contexts in which the Digital Video Library system is being used and some evaluation findings. Through DiVA, the university is investigating how it can use its video assets effectively, to support reuse of existing materials in course production. The project team is also evaluating student use of the system. The paper reports on an observation study which revealed several usability issues and stakeholders' opinions about potential uses of the DiVA system. This is followed by findings from an evaluation of student use of the system at a residential school and its use as part of an online learning activity undertaken by students accessing the system remotely. Evaluation findings to date indicate some quality and workload issues but they also show opportunities that come to light when using the DiVA system

Robot Consciousness: Physics and Metaphysics Here and Abroad

Interest has been renewed in the study of consciousness, both theoretical and applied, following developments in 20th and early 21st-century logic, metamathematics, computer science, and the brain sciences. In this evolving narrative, I explore several theoretical questions about the types of artificial intelligence and offer several conjectures about how they affect possible future developments in this exceptionally transformative field of research. I also address the practical significance of the advances in artificial intelligence in view of the cautions issued by prominent scientists, politicians, and ethicists about the possible dangers of such sufficiently advanced general intelligence, including by implication the search for extraterrestrial intelligence

Measuring the differences between human-human and human-machine dialogs

In this paper, we assess the applicability of user simulation techniques to generate dialogs which are similar to real human-machine spoken interactions.To do so, we present the results of the comparison between three corpora acquired by means of different techniques. The first corpus was acquired with real users.A statistical user simulation technique has been applied to the same task to acquire the second corpus. In this technique, the next user answer is selected by means of a classification process that takes into account the previous dialog history, the lexical information in the clause, and the subtask of the dialog to which it contributes. Finally, a dialog simulation technique has been developed for the acquisition of the third corpus. This technique uses a random selection of the user and system turns, defining stop conditions for automatically deciding if the simulated dialog is successful or not. We use several evaluation measures proposed in previous research to compare between our three acquired corpora, and then discuss the similarities and differences with regard to these measures
