    Continuous maintenance and the future – Foundations and technological challenges

    High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ‘big data’ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product.     Condition based maintenance is now routinely applied to rotating machinery, with data transmitted wirelessly and reviewed automatically, to give a prognostic or remaining life estimate. The challenge is implementing integrated NDE/SHM strategies for structural assessment. However, advances in computer and communications technology, the internet of things and management of big data are starting to offer the digital infrastructure which can be combined with new sensor systems to enable SHM/prognostics to be applied to structural materials. Some challenges and opportunities which assess and demonstrate how NDE and SHM can potentially be revolutionized in the age of Industry 4.0 are outlined

    Big Data and the Internet of Things

    Advances in sensing and computing capabilities are making it possible to embed increasing computing power in small devices. This has enabled the sensing devices not just to passively capture data at very high resolution but also to take sophisticated actions in response. Combined with advances in communication, this is resulting in an ecosystem of highly interconnected devices referred to as the Internet of Things - IoT. In conjunction, the advances in machine learning have allowed building models on this ever increasing amounts of data. Consequently, devices all the way from heavy assets such as aircraft engines to wearables such as health monitors can all now not only generate massive amounts of data but can draw back on aggregate analytics to "improve" their performance over time. Big data analytics has been identified as a key enabler for the IoT. In this chapter, we discuss various avenues of the IoT where big data analytics either is already making a significant impact or is on the cusp of doing so.     Novel deep cross-domain framework for fault diagnosis or rotary machinery in prognostics and health management

    Improving the reliability of engineered systems is a crucial problem in many applications in various engineering fields, such as aerospace, nuclear energy, and water declination industries. This requires efficient and effective system health monitoring methods, including processing and analyzing massive machinery data to detect anomalies and performing diagnosis and prognosis. In recent years, deep learning has been a fast-growing field and has shown promising results for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) in interpreting condition monitoring signals such as vibration, acoustic emission, and pressure due to its capacity to mine complex representations from raw data. This doctoral research provides a systematic review of state-of-the-art deep learning-based PHM frameworks, an empirical analysis on bearing fault diagnosis benchmarks, and a novel multi-source domain adaptation framework. It emphasizes the most recent trends within the field and presents the benefits and potentials of state-of-the-art deep neural networks for system health management. Besides, the limitations and challenges of the existing technologies are discussed, which leads to opportunities for future research. The empirical study of the benchmarks highlights the evaluation results of the existing models on bearing fault diagnosis benchmark datasets in terms of various performance metrics such as accuracy and training time. The result of the study is very important for comparing or testing new models. A novel multi-source domain adaptation framework for fault diagnosis of rotary machinery is also proposed, which aligns the domains in both feature-level and task-level. The proposed framework transfers the knowledge from multiple labeled source domains into a single unlabeled target domain by reducing the feature distribution discrepancy between the target domain and each source domain. Besides, the model can be easily reduced to a single-source domain adaptation problem. Also, the model can be readily updated to unsupervised domain adaptation problems in other fields such as image classification and image segmentation. Further, the proposed model is modified with a novel conditional weighting mechanism that aligns the class-conditional probability of the domains and reduces the effect of irrelevant source domain which is a critical issue in multi-source domain adaptation algorithms. The experimental verification results show the superiority of the proposed framework over state-of-the-art multi-source domain-adaptation models

    Exploring the role of E-maintenance for value creation in service provision

    Technological innovations has always played an important role in economic growth and industrial productivity, but they have also potential to influence service industry. In particular, they can offer support to the process of servitization in manufacturing companies. This article presents a study regarding the prospective value that different technological innovations can offer to maintenance service provision. A review of different baseline technologies and a categorization of several types of E-maintenance tools and applications has been carried out in order to understand the new functionalities that can potentially bring to the provision of smart maintenance services. Moreover, a value analysis method for representing the contribution of tool categories to several value dimensions is presented here. This method can be used for identifying the best technological solution, matching both customer value and provider value, i.e. conforming a win-win situation for the parties involved in the service provision. Some preliminary results based on a survey are eventually given as a first test of its applicability

    An intelligent approach for data pre-processing and analysis in predictive maintenance with an industrial case study

    Recent development in the predictive maintenance field has focused on incorporating artificial intelligence techniques in the monitoring and prognostics of machine health. The current predictive maintenance applications in manufacturing are now more dependent on data-driven Machine Learning algorithms requiring an intelligent and effective analysis of a large amount of historical and real-time data coming from multiple streams (sensors and computer systems) across multiple machines. Therefore, this article addresses issues of data pre-processing that have a significant impact on generalization performance of a Machine Learning algorithm. We present an intelligent approach using unsupervised Machine Learning techniques for data pre-processing and analysis in predictive maintenance to achieve qualified and structured data. We also demonstrate the applicability of the formulated approach by using an industrial case study in manufacturing. Data sets from the manufacturing industry are analyzed to identify data quality problems and detect interesting subsets for hidden information. With the approach formulated, it is possible to get the useful and diagnostic information in a systematic way about component/machine behavior as the basis for decision support and prognostic model development in predictive maintenance
