    PILOT : Practical Privacy-Preserving Indoor Localization Using OuTsourcing

    In the last decade, we observed a constantly growing number of Location-Based Services (LBSs) used in indoor environments, such as for targeted advertising in shopping malls or finding nearby friends. Although privacy-preserving LBSs were addressed in the literature, there was a lack of attention to the problem of enhancing privacy of indoor localization, i.e., the process of obtaining the users' locations indoors and, thus, a prerequisite for any indoor LBS. In this work we present PILOT, the first practically efficient solution for Privacy-Preserving Indoor Localization (PPIL) that was obtained by a synergy of the research areas indoor localization and applied cryptography. We design, implement, and evaluate protocols for Wi-Fi fingerprint-based PPIL that rely on 4 different distance metrics. To save energy and network bandwidth for the mobile end devices in PPIL, we securely outsource the computations to two non-colluding semi-honest parties. Our solution mixes different secure two-party computation protocols and we design size-and depth-optimized circuits for PPIL. We construct efficient circuit building blocks that are of independent interest: Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) capable oblivious access to an array with low circuit depth and selection of the k-Nearest Neighbors with small circuit size. Additionally, we reduce Received Signal Strength (RSS) values from 8 bits to 4 bits without any significant accuracy reduction. Our most efficient PPIL protocol is 553x faster than that of Li et al. (INFOCOM'14) and 500× faster than that of Ziegeldorf et al. (WiSec'14). Our implementation on commodity hardware has practical run-times of less than 1 second even for the most accurate distance metrics that we consider, and it can process more than half a million PPIL queries per day.Peer reviewe

Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    Indoor positioning with deep learning for mobile IoT systems

    2022 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.The development of human-centric services with mobile devices in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) has opened the possibility of merging indoor positioning technologies with various mobile applications to deliver stable and responsive indoor navigation and localization functionalities that can enhance user experience within increasingly complex indoor environments. But as GPS signals cannot easily penetrate modern building structures, it is challenging to build reliable indoor positioning systems (IPS). Currently, Wi-Fi sensing based indoor localization techniques are gaining in popularity as a means to build accurate IPS, benefiting from the prevalence of 802.11 family. Wi-Fi fingerprinting based indoor localization has shown remarkable performance over geometric mapping in complex indoor environments by taking advantage of pattern matching techniques. Today, the two main information extracted from Wi-Fi signals to form fingerprints are Received Signal Strength Index (RSSI) and Channel State Information (CSI) with Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, where the former can provide the average localization error around or under 10 meters but has low hardware and software requirements, while the latter has a higher chance to estimate locations with ultra-low distance errors but demands more resources from chipsets, firmware/software environments, etc. This thesis makes two novel contributions towards realizing viable IPS on mobile devices using RSSI and CSI information, and deep machine learning based fingerprinting. Due to the larger quantity of data and more sophisticated signal patterns to create fingerprints in complex indoor environments, conventional machine learning algorithms that need carefully engineered features suffer from the challenges of identifying features from very high dimensional data. Hence, the abilities of approximation functions generated from conventional machine learning models to estimate locations are limited. Deep machine learning based approaches can overcome these challenges to realize scalable feature pattern matching approaches such as fingerprinting. However, deep machine learning models generally require considerable memory footprint, and this creates a significant issue on resource-constrained devices such as mobile IoT devices, wearables, smartphones, etc. Developing efficient deep learning models is a critical factor to lower energy consumption for resource intensive mobile IoT devices and accelerate inference time. To address this issue, our first contribution proposes the CHISEL framework, which is a Wi-Fi RSSI- based IPS that incorporates data augmentation and compression-aware two-dimensional convolutional neural networks (2D CAECNNs) with different pruning and quantization options. The proposed model compression techniques help reduce model deployment overheads in the IPS. Unlike RSSI, CSI takes advantages of multipath signals to potentially help indoor localization algorithms achieve a higher level of localization accuracy. The compensations for magnitude attenuation and phase shifting during wireless propagation generate different patterns that can be utilized to define the uniqueness of different locations of signal reception. However, all prior work in this domain constrains the experimental space to relatively small-sized and rectangular rooms where the complexity of building interiors and dynamic noise from human activities, etc., are seldom considered. As part of our second contribution, we propose an end-to-end deep learning based framework called CSILoc for Wi-Fi CSI-based IPS on mobile IoT devices. The framework includes CSI data collection, clustering, denoising, calibration and classification, and is the first study to verify the feasibility to use CSI for floor level indoor localization with minimal knowledge of Wi-Fi access points (APs), thus avoiding security concerns during the offline data collection process

    Key Generation in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Frequency-selective Channels - Design, Implementation, and Analysis

    Key management in wireless sensor networks faces several new challenges. The scale, resource limitations, and new threats such as node capture necessitate the use of an on-line key generation by the nodes themselves. However, the cost of such schemes is high since their secrecy is based on computational complexity. Recently, several research contributions justified that the wireless channel itself can be used to generate information-theoretic secure keys. By exchanging sampling messages during movement, a bit string can be derived that is only known to the involved entities. Yet, movement is not the only possibility to generate randomness. The channel response is also strongly dependent on the frequency of the transmitted signal. In our work, we introduce a protocol for key generation based on the frequency-selectivity of channel fading. The practical advantage of this approach is that we do not require node movement. Thus, the frequent case of a sensor network with static motes is supported. Furthermore, the error correction property of the protocol mitigates the effects of measurement errors and other temporal effects, giving rise to an agreement rate of over 97%. We show the applicability of our protocol by implementing it on MICAz motes, and evaluate its robustness and secrecy through experiments and analysis.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computin

    Privacy in Indoor Positioning Systems: A Systematic Review

The selected 41 articles on location privacy preserving mechanisms employ non-inherently private methods such as encryption, k-anonymity, and differential privacy. The 15 identified mechanisms are categorized and summarized by where they are processed: on device, during transmission, or at a server. Trade-offs such as calculation speed, granularity, or complexity in set-up are identified for each mechanism. In 40% of the papers, some trade-offs are minimized by combining several methods into a hybrid solution. The combinations of mechanisms and their levels of offered privacy are suggested based on a series of user mobility cases

    Design of Indoor Positioning Systems Based on Location Fingerprinting Technique

    Positioning systems enable location-awareness for mobile computers in ubiquitous and pervasive wireless computing. By utilizing location information, location-aware computers can render location-based services possible for mobile users. Indoor positioning systems based on location fingerprints of wireless local area networks have been suggested as a viable solution where the global positioning system does not work well. Instead of depending on accurate estimations of angle or distance in order to derive the location with geometry, the fingerprinting technique associates location-dependent characteristics such as received signal strength to a location and uses these characteristics to infer the location. The advantage of this technique is that it is simple to deploy with no specialized hardware required at the mobile station except the wireless network interface card. Any existing wireless local area network infrastructure can be reused for this kind of positioning system. While empirical results and performance studies of such positioning systems are presented in the literature, analytical models that can be used as a framework for efficiently designing the positioning systems are not available. This dissertation develops an analytical model as a design tool and recommends a design guideline for such positioning systems in order to expedite the deployment process. A system designer can use this framework to strike a balance between the accuracy, the precision, the location granularity, the number of access points, and the location spacing. A systematic study is used to analyze the location fingerprint and discover its unique properties. The location fingerprint based on the received signal strength is investigated. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches of location fingerprint representations are considered. The main objectives of this work are to predict the performance of such systems using a suitable model and perform sensitivity analyses that are useful for selecting proper system parameters such as number of access points and minimum spacing between any two different locations

    FAPRIL: Towards Faster Privacy-Preserving Fingerprint-Based Localization

    Fingerprinting is a commonly used technique to provide accurate localization for indoor areas, where global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo, cannot function or are not precise enough. Although fingerprint-based indoor localization has gained wide popularity, existing solutions that preserve privacy either rely on non-colluding servers or have high communication which hinder deployment. In this work we present FAPRIL, a privacy-preserving indoor localization scheme, which takes advantage of the latest secure two-party computation protocol improvements. We can split our scheme into two parts: an input independent setup phase and an online phase. We concentrate on optimizing the online phase for mobile clients who run on a mobile data plan and observe that recurring operands allow to optimize the total communication overhead even further. Our observation can be generalized, e.g., to improve multiplication of Arithmetic secret shared matrices. We implement FAPRIL on mobile devices and our benchmarks over a simulated LTE network show that the online phase of a private localization takes under 0.15 seconds with less than 0.20 megabytes of communication even for large buildings. The setup phase, which can be pre-computed, depends heavily on the setting but stays in the range 0.28 - 4.14 seconds and 0.69 - 16.00 megabytes per localization query.     An Overview on IEEE 802.11bf: WLAN Sensing

    With recent advancements, the wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology has been successfully utilized to realize sensing functionalities such as detection, localization, and recognition. However, the WLANs standards are developed mainly for the purpose of communication, and thus may not be able to meet the stringent requirements for emerging sensing applications. To resolve this issue, a new Task Group (TG), namely IEEE 802.11bf, has been established by the IEEE 802.11 working group, with the objective of creating a new amendment to the WLAN standard to meet advanced sensing requirements while minimizing the effect on communications. This paper provides a comprehensive overview on the up-to-date efforts in the IEEE 802.11bf TG. First, we introduce the definition of the 802.11bf amendment and its formation and standardization timeline. Next, we discuss the WLAN sensing use cases with the corresponding key performance indicator (KPI) requirements. After reviewing previous WLAN sensing research based on communication-oriented WLAN standards, we identify their limitations and underscore the practical need for the new sensing-oriented amendment in 802.11bf. Furthermore, we discuss the WLAN sensing framework and procedure used for measurement acquisition, by considering both sensing at sub-7GHz and directional multi-gigabit (DMG) sensing at 60 GHz, respectively, and address their shared features, similarities, and differences. In addition, we present various candidate technical features for IEEE 802.11bf, including waveform/sequence design, feedback types, as well as quantization and compression techniques. We also describe the methodologies and the channel modeling used by the IEEE 802.11bf TG for evaluation.
