    Experience-driven optimal motion synthesis in complex and shared environments

    Optimal loco-manipulation planning and control for high-dimensional systems based on general, non-linear optimisation allows for the specification of versatile motion subject to complex constraints. However, complex, non-linear system and environment dynamics, switching contacts, and collision avoidance in cluttered environments introduce non-convexity and discontinuity in the optimisation space. This renders finding optimal solutions in complex and changing environments an open and challenging problem in robotics. Global optimisation methods can take a prohibitively long time to converge. Slow convergence makes them unsuitable for live deployment and online re-planning of motion policies in response to changes in the task or environment. Local optimisation techniques, in contrast, converge fast within the basin of attraction of a minimum but may not converge at all without a good initial guess as they can easily get stuck in local minima. Local methods are, therefore, a suitable choice provided we can supply a good initial guess. If a similarity between problems can be found and exploited, a memory of optimal solutions can be computed and compressed efficiently in an offline computation process. During runtime, we can query this memory to bootstrap motion synthesis by providing a good initial seed to the local optimisation solver. In order to realise such a system, we need to address several connected problems and questions: First, the formulation of the optimisation problem (and its parametrisation to allow solutions to transfer to new scenarios), and related, the type and granularity of user input, along with a strategy for recovery and feedback in case of unexpected changes or failure. Second, a sampling strategy during the database/memory generation that explores the parameter space efficiently without resorting to exhaustive measures---i.e., to balance storage size/memory with online runtime to adapt/repair the initial guess. Third, the question of how to represent the problem and environment to parametrise, compute, store, retrieve, and exploit the memory efficiently during pre-computation and runtime. One strategy to make the problem computationally tractable is to decompose planning into a series of sequential sub-problems, e.g., contact-before-motion approaches which sequentially perform goal state planning, contact planning, motion planning, and encoding. Here, subsequent stages operate within the null-space of the constraints of the prior problem, such as the contact mode or sequence. This doctoral thesis follows this line of work. It investigates general optimisation-based formulations for motion synthesis along with a strategy for exploration, encoding, and exploitation of a versatile memory-of-motion for providing an initial guess to optimisation solvers. In particular, we focus on manipulation in complex environments with high-dimensional robot systems such as humanoids and mobile manipulators. The first part of this thesis focuses on collision-free motion generation to reliably generate motions. We present a general, collision-free inverse kinematics method using a combination of gradient-based local optimisation with random/evolution strategy restarting to achieve high success rates and avoid local minima. We use formulations for discrete collision avoidance and introduce a novel, computationally fast continuous collision avoidance objective based on conservative advancement and harmonic potential fields. Using this, we can synthesise continuous-time collision-free motion plans in the presence of moving obstacles. It further enables to discretise trajectories with fewer waypoints, which in turn considerably reduces the optimisation problem complexity, and thus, time to solve. The second part focuses on problem representations and exploration. We first introduce an efficient solution encoding for trajectory library-based approaches. This representation, paired with an accompanying exploration strategy for offline pre-computation, permits the application of inexpensive distance metrics during runtime. We demonstrate how our method efficiently re-uses trajectory samples, increases planning success rates, and reduces planning time while being highly memory-efficient. We subsequently present a method to explore the topological features of the solution space using tools from computational homology. This enables us to cluster solutions according to their inherent structure which increases the success of warm-starting for problems with discontinuities and multi-modality. The third part focuses on real-world deployment in laboratory and field experiments as well as incorporating user input. We present a framework for robust shared autonomy with a focus on continuous scene monitoring for assured safety. This framework further supports interactive adjustment of autonomy levels from fully teleoperated to automatic execution of stored behaviour sequences. Finally, we present sensing and control for the integration and embodiment of the presented methodology in high-dimensional real-world platforms used in laboratory experiments and real-world deployment. We validate our presented methods using hardware experiments on a variety of robot platforms demonstrating generalisation to other robots and environments

    Stochastic Model Predictive Control for Eco-Driving Assistance Systems in Electric Vehicles

    Electric vehicles are expected to become one of the key elements of future sustainable transportation systems. The first generation of electric cars are already commercially available but still, suffer from problems and constraints that have to be solved before a mass market might be created. Key aspects that will play an important role in modern electric vehicles are range extension, energy efficiency, safety, comfort as well as communication. An overall solution approach to integrating all these aspects is the development of advanced driver assistance systems to make electric vehicles more intelligent. Driver assistance systems are based on the integration of suitable sensors and actuators as well as electronic devices and software-enabled control functionality to automatically support the human driver. Driver assistance for electric vehicles will differ from the already used systems in fuel-powered cars such as electronic stability programs, adaptive cruise control etc. in a way that they must support energy efficiency while the system itself must also have a low power consumption. In this work, an eco-driving functionality as the first step towards those new driver assistance systems for electric vehicles will be investigated. Using information about the internal state of the car, navigation information as well as advanced information about the environment coming from sensors and network connections, an algorithm will be developed that will adapt the speed of the vehicle automatically to minimize energy consumption. From an algorithmic point of view, a stochastic model predictive control approach will be applied and adapted to the special constraints of the problem. Finally, the solution will be tested in simulations as well as in first experiments with a commercial electric vehicle in the SnT Automation & Robotics Research Group (SnT ARG)

    Model-Based Vehicle Dynamics Control for Active Safety

    The functionality of modern automotive vehicles is becoming increasingly dependent on control systems. Active safety is an area in which control systems play a pivotal role. Currently, rule-based control algorithms are widespread throughout the automotive industry. In order to improve performance and reduce development time, model-based methods may be employed. The primary contribution of this thesis is the development of a vehicle dynamics controller for rollover mitigation. A central part of this work has been the investigation of control allocation methods, which are used to transform high-level controller commands to actuator inputs in the presence of numerous constraints. Quadratic programming is used to solve a static optimization problem in each sample. An investigation of the numerical methods used to solve such problems was carried out, leading to the development of a modified active set algorithm.Vehicle dynamics control systems typically require input from a number of supporting systems, including observers and estimation algorithms. A key parameter for virtually all VDC systems is the friction coefficient. Model-based friction estimation based on the physically-derived brush model is investigated

    Advanced human inspired walking strategies for humanoid robots

    Cette thèse traite du problème de la locomotion des robots humanoïdes dans le contexte du projet européen KoroiBot. En s'inspirant de l'être humain, l'objectif de ce projet est l'amélioration des capacités des robots humanoïdes à se mouvoir de façon dynamique et polyvalente. Le coeur de l'approche scientifique repose sur l'utilisation du controle optimal, à la fois pour l'identification des couts optimisés par l'être humain et pour leur mise en oeuvre sur les robots des partenaires roboticiens. Cette thèse s'illustre donc par une collaboration à la fois avec des mathématiciens du contrôle et des spécialistes de la modélisation des primitives motrices. Les contributions majeures de cette thèse reposent donc sur la conception de nouveaux algorithmes temps-réel de contrôle pour la locomotion des robots humanoïdes avec nos collégues de l'université d'Heidelberg et leur intégration sur le robot HRP-2. Deux contrôleurs seront présentés, le premier permettant la locomotion multi-contacts avec une connaissance a priori des futures positions des contacts. Le deuxième étant une extension d'un travail réalisé sur de la marche sur sol plat améliorant les performances et ajoutant des fonctionnalitées au précédent algorithme. En collaborant avec des spécialistes du mouvement humain nous avons implementé un contrôleur innovant permettant de suivre des trajectoires cycliques du centre de masse. Nous présenterons aussi un contrôleur corps-complet utilisant, pour le haut du corps, des primitives de mouvements extraites du mouvement humain et pour le bas du corps, un générateur de marche. Les résultats de cette thèse ont été intégrés dans la suite logicielle "Stack-of-Tasks" du LAAS-CNRS.This thesis covers the topic of humanoid robot locomotion in the frame of the European project KoroiBot. The goal of this project is to enhance the ability of humanoid robots to walk in a dynamic and versatile fashion as humans do. Research and innovation studies in KoroiBot rely on optimal control methods both for the identification of cost functions used by human being and for their implementations on robots owned by roboticist partners. Hence, this thesis includes fruitful collaborations with both control mathematicians and experts in motion primitive modeling. The main contributions of this PhD thesis lies in the design of new real time controllers for humanoid robot locomotion with our partners from the University of Heidelberg and their integration on the HRP-2 robot. Two controllers will be shown, one allowing multi-contact locomotion with a prior knowledge of the future contacts. And the second is an extension of a previous work improving performance and providing additional functionalities. In a collaboration with experts in human motion we designed an innovating controller for tracking cyclic trajectories of the center of mass. We also show a whole body controller using upper body movement primitives extracted from human behavior and lower body movement computed by a walking pattern generator. The results of this thesis have been integrated into the LAAS-CNRS "Stack-of-Tasks" software suit

    On-board Obstacle Avoidance in the Teleoperation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    Teleoperation von Drohnen in Umgebungen ohne GPS-Verbindung und wenig Bewegungsspielraum stellt den Operator vor besondere Herausforderungen. Hindernisse in einer unbekannten Umgebung erfordern eine zuverlässige Zustandsschätzung und Algorithmen zur Vermeidung von Kollisionen. In dieser Dissertation präsentieren wir ein System zur kollisionsfreien Navigation einer ferngesteuerten Drohne mit vier Propellern (Quadcopter) in abgeschlossenen Räumen. Die Plattform ist mit einem Miniaturcomputer und dem Minimum an Sensoren ausgestattet. Diese Ausstattung genügt den Anforderungen an die Rechenleistung. Dieses Setup ermöglicht des Weiteren eine hochgenaue Zustandsschätzung mit Hilfe einer Kaskaden-Architektur, sehr gutes Folgeverhalten bezüglich der kommandierten Geschwindigkeit, sowie eine kollisionsfreie Navigation. Ein Komplementärfilter berechnet die Höhe der Drohne, während ein Kalman-Filter Beschleunigung durch eine IMU und Messungen eines Optical-Flow Sensors fusioniert und in die Softwarearchitektur integriert. Eine RGB-D Kamera stellt dem Operator ein visuelles Feedback, sowie Distanzmessungen zur Verfügung, um ein Roboter-zentriertes Modell umliegender Hindernisse mit Hilfe eines Bin-Occupancy-Filters zu erstellen. Der Algorithmus speichert die Position dieser Hindernisse, auch wenn sie das Sehfeld des Sensors verlassen, mit Hilfe des geschätzten Zustandes des Roboters. Das Prinzip des Ausweich-Algorithmus basiert auf dem Ansatz einer modell-prädiktiven Regelung. Durch Vorhersage der wahrscheinlichen Position eines Hindernisses werden die durch den Operator kommandierten Sollwerte gefiltert, um eine mögliche Kollision mit einem Hindernis zu vermeiden. Die Plattform wurde experimentell sowohl in einer räumlich abgeschlossenen Umgebung mit zahlreichen Hindernissen als auch bei Testflügen in offener Umgebung mit natürlichen Hindernissen wie z.B. Bäume getestet. Fliegende Roboter bergen das Risiko, im Fall eines Fehlers, sei es ein Bedienungs- oder Berechnungsfehler, durch einen Aufprall am Boden oder an Hindernissen Schaden zu nehmen. Aus diesem Grund nimmt die Entwicklung von Algorithmen dieser Roboter ein hohes Maß an Zeit und Ressourcen in Anspruch. In dieser Arbeit präsentieren wir zwei Methoden (Software-in-the-loop- und Hardware-in-the-loop-Simulation) um den Entwicklungsprozess zu vereinfachen. Via Software-in-the-loop-Simulation konnte der Zustandsschätzer mit Hilfe simulierter Sensoren und zuvor aufgenommener Datensätze verbessert werden. Eine Hardware-in-the-loop Simulation ermöglichte uns, den Roboter in Gazebo (ein bekannter frei verfügbarer ROS-Simulator) mit zusätzlicher auf dem Roboter installierter Hardware in Simulation zu bewegen. Ebenso können wir damit die Echtzeitfähigkeit der Algorithmen direkt auf der Hardware validieren und verifizieren. Zu guter Letzt analysierten wir den Einfluss der Roboterbewegung auf das visuelle Feedback des Operators. Obwohl einige Drohnen die Möglichkeit einer mechanischen Stabilisierung der Kamera besitzen, können unsere Drohnen aufgrund von Gewichtsbeschränkungen nicht auf diese Unterstützung zurückgreifen. Eine Fixierung der Kamera verursacht, während der Roboter sich bewegt, oft unstetige Bewegungen des Bildes und beeinträchtigt damit negativ die Manövrierbarkeit des Roboters. Viele wissenschaftliche Arbeiten beschäftigen sich mit der Lösung dieses Problems durch Feature-Tracking. Damit kann die Bewegung der Kamera rekonstruiert und das Videosignal stabilisiert werden. Wir zeigen, dass diese Methode stark vereinfacht werden kann, durch die Verwendung der Roboter-internen IMU. Unsere Ergebnisse belegen, dass unser Algorithmus das Kamerabild erfolgreich stabilisieren und der rechnerische Aufwand deutlich reduziert werden kann. Ebenso präsentieren wir ein neues Design eines Quadcopters, um dessen Ausrichtung von der lateralen Bewegung zu entkoppeln. Unser Konzept erlaubt die Neigung der Propellerblätter unabhängig von der Ausrichtung des Roboters mit Hilfe zweier zusätzlicher Aktuatoren. Nachdem wir das dynamische Modell dieses Systems hergeleitet haben, synthetisierten wir einen auf Feedback-Linearisierung basierten Regler. Simulationen bestätigen unsere Überlegungen und heben die Verbesserung der Manövrierfähigkeit dieses neuartigen Designs hervor.The teleoperation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), especially in cramped, GPS-restricted, environments, poses many challenges. The presence of obstacles in an unfamiliar environment requires reliable state estimation and active algorithms to prevent collisions. In this dissertation, we present a collision-free indoor navigation system for a teleoperated quadrotor UAV. The platform is equipped with an on-board miniature computer and a minimal set of sensors for this task and is self-sufficient with respect to external tracking systems and computation. The platform is capable of highly accurate state-estimation, tracking of the velocity commanded by the user and collision-free navigation. The robot estimates its state in a cascade architecture. The attitude of the platform is calculated with a complementary filter and its linear velocity through a Kalman filter integration of inertial and optical flow measurements. An RGB-D camera serves the purpose of providing visual feedback to the operator and depth measurements to build a probabilistic, robot-centric obstacle state with a bin-occupancy filter. The algorithm tracks the obstacles when they leave the field of view of the sensor by updating their positions with the estimate of the robot's motion. The avoidance part of our navigation system is based on the Model Predictive Control approach. By predicting the possible future obstacles states, the UAV filters the operator commands by altering them to prevent collisions. Experiments in obstacle-rich indoor and outdoor environments validate the efficiency of the proposed setup. Flying robots are highly prone to damage in cases of control errors, as these most likely will cause them to fall to the ground. Therefore, the development of algorithm for UAVs entails considerable amount of time and resources. In this dissertation we present two simulation methods, i.e. software- and hardware-in-the-loop simulations, to facilitate this process. The software-in-the-loop testing was used for the development and tuning of the state estimator for our robot using both the simulated sensors and pre-recorded datasets of sensor measurements, e.g., from real robotic experiments. With hardware-in-the-loop simulations, we are able to command the robot simulated in Gazebo, a popular open source ROS-enabled physical simulator, using computational units that are embedded on our quadrotor UAVs. Hence, we can test in simulation not only the correct execution of algorithms, but also the computational feasibility directly on the robot's hardware. Lastly, we analyze the influence of the robot's motion on the visual feedback provided to the operator. While some UAVs have the capacity to carry mechanically stabilized camera equipment, weight limits or other problems may make mechanical stabilization impractical. With a fixed camera, the video stream is often unsteady due to the multirotor's movement and can impair the operator's situation awareness. There has been significant research on how to stabilize videos using feature tracking to determine camera movement, which in turn is used to manipulate frames and stabilize the camera stream. However, we believe that this process could be greatly simplified by using data from a UAV’s on-board inertial measurement unit to stabilize the camera feed. Our results show that our algorithm successfully stabilizes the camera stream with the added benefit of requiring less computational power. We also propose a novel quadrotor design concept to decouple its orientation from the lateral motion of the quadrotor. In our design the tilt angles of the propellers with respect to the quadrotor body are being simultaneously controlled with two additional actuators by employing the parallelogram principle. After deriving the dynamic model of this design, we propose a controller for this platform based on feedback linearization. Simulation results confirm our theoretical findings, highlighting the improved motion capabilities of this novel design with respect to standard quadrotors

    A LiDAR Based Semi-Autonomous Collision Avoidance System and the Development of a Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator to Aid in Algorithm Development and Human Studies

    In this paper, the architecture and implementation of an embedded controller for a steering based semi-autonomous collision avoidance system on a 1/10th scale model is presented. In addition, the development of a 2D hardware-in-the-loop simulator with vehicle dynamics based on the bicycle model is described. The semi-autonomous collision avoidance software is fully contained onboard a single-board computer running embedded GNU/Linux. To eliminate any wired tethers that limit the system’s abilities, the driver operates the vehicle at a user-control-station through a wireless Bluetooth interface. The user-control-station is outfitted with a game-controller that provides standard steering wheel and pedal controls along with a television monitor equipped with a wireless video receiver in order to provide a real-time driver’s perspective video feed. The hardware-in-the-loop simulator was developed in order to aid in the evaluation and further development of the semi-autonomous collision avoidance algorithms. In addition, a post analysis tool was created to numerically and visually inspect the controller’s responses. The ultimate goal of this project was to create a wireless 1/10th scale collision avoidance research platform to facilitate human studies surrounding driver assistance and active safety systems in automobiles.     Uncertainty and social considerations for mobile assistive robot navigation

    An increased interest in mobile robots has been seen over the past years. The wide range of possible applications, from vacuum cleaners to assistant robots, makes such robots an interesting solution to many everyday problems. A key requirement for the mass deployment of such robots is to ensure they can safely navigate around our daily living environments. A robot colliding with or bumping into a person may be, in some contexts, unacceptable. For example, if a robot working around elderly people collides with one of them, it may cause serious injuries. This thesis explores four major components required for effective robot navigation: sensing the static environment, detection and tracking of moving people, obstacle and people avoidance with uncertainty measurement, and basic social navigation considerations. First, to guarantee adherence to basic safety constraints, sensors and algorithms required to measure the complex structure of our daily living environments are explored. Not only do the static components of the environment have to be measured, but so do any people present. A people detection and tracking algorithm, aimed for a crowded environment is proposed, thus enhancing the robot's perception capabilities. Our daily living environments present many inherent sources of uncertainty for robots, one of them arising due to the robot's inability to know people's intentions as they move. To solve this problem, a motion model that assumes unknown long-term intentions is proposed. This is used in conjunction with a novel uncertainty aware local planner to create feasible trajectories. In social situations, the presence of groups of people cannot be neglected when navigating. To avoid the robot interrupting groups of people, it first needs to be able to detect such groups. A group detector is proposed which relies on a set of gaze- and geometric-based features. Avoiding group disruption is finally incorporated into the navigation algorithm by means of taking into account the probability of disrupting a group's activities. The effectiveness of the four different components is evaluated using real world and simulated data, demonstrating the benefits for mobile robot navigation.Open Acces

    Advancing automation and robotics technology for the Space Station Freedom and for the U.S. economy

    In April 1985, as required by Public Law 98-371, the NASA Advanced Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) reported to Congress the results of its studies on advanced automation and robotics technology for use on Space Station Freedom. This material was documented in the initial report (NASA Technical Memorandum 87566). A further requirement of the law was that ATAC follow NASA's progress in this area and report to Congress semiannually. This report is the sixteenth in a series of progress updates and covers the period between 15 Sep. 1992 - 16 Mar. 1993. The report describes the progress made by Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the Space Station Freedom in developing and applying advanced automation and robotics technology. Emphasis was placed upon the Space Station Freedom Program responses to specific recommendations made in ATAC Progress Report 15; and includes a status review of Space Station Freedom Launch Processing facilities at Kennedy Space Center. Assessments are presented for these and other areas as they apply to the advancement of automation and robotics technology for Space Station Freedom
