    Insights into dynamic tuning of magnetic-resonant wireless power transfer receivers based on switch-mode gyrators

    Magnetic-resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) has become a reliable contactless source of power for a wide range of applications. WPT spans different power levels ranging from low-power implantable devices up to high-power electric vehicles (EV) battery charging. The transmission range and efficiency of WPT have been reasonably enhanced by resonating the transmitter and receiver coils at a common frequency. Nevertheless, matching between resonance in the transmitter and receiver is quite cumbersome, particularly in single-transmitter multi-receiver systems. The resonance frequency in transmitter and receiver tank circuits has to be perfectly matched, otherwise power transfer capability is greatly degraded. This paper discusses the mistuning effect of parallel-compensated receivers, and thereof a novel dynamic frequency tuning method and related circuit topology and control is proposed and characterized in the system application.     A Study on Energy-Efficient Inductor Current Controls for Maximum Energy Delivery in Battery-free Buck Converter

    학위논문 (박사)-- 서울대학교 대학원 : 전기·컴퓨터공학부, 2017. 2. 김재하.A discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) buck converter, which acts as a voltage regulator in battery-free applications, is proposed to maximize the ener-gy delivery to the load system. In this work, we focus the energy loss problem during start-up and steady-state operation of the buck converter, which severely limits the energy delivery. Especially, the energy loss problem arises from the fact that there is no constant power source such as a battery and the only a small amount of energy harvested from the ambient energy sources is available. To address such energy loss problem, this dissertation proposes optimal induc-tor current control techniques at each operation to greatly reduce the energy losses. First, a switching-based stepwise capacitor charging scheme is presented that can charge the output capacitor with constant inductor current during start-up operation. By switching the inductor with gradually incrementing duty-cycle ratios in a stepwise fashion, the buck converter can make the inductor current a constant current source, which can greatly reduce the start-up energy loss com-pared to that in the conventional capacitor charging scheme with a voltage source. Second, a variable on-time (VOT) pulse-frequency-modulation (PFM) scheme is presented that can keep the peak inductor current constant during steady-state operation. By adaptively varying the on-time according to the op-erating voltage conditions of the buck converter, it can suppress the voltage ripple and improve the power efficiency even with a small output capacitor. Third, an adaptive off-time positioning zero-crossing detector (AOP-ZCD) is presented that can adaptively position the turn-off timing of the low-side switch close to the zero-inductor-current timing by predicting the inductor current waveform without using a power-hungry continuous-time ZCD. To demonstrate the proposed design concepts, the prototype battery-free wireless remote switch including the piezoelectric energy harvester and the proposed buck converter was fabricated in a 250 nm high-voltage CMOS technology. It can harvest a total energy of 246 μJ from a single button press action of a 300-mm2 lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) piezoelectric disc, and deliver more than 200 μJ to the load, which is sufficient to transmit a 4-byte-long message via 2.4-GHz wireless USB channel over a 10-m distance. If such battery-free application does not use the proposed buck converter, the energy losses in-curred at the buck converter would be larger than the energy harvested, and therefore it cannot operate with a single button-pressing action.     Real time hardware implementation of discrete sliding mode fuzzy controlled buck converter using digital signal processor

    This paper deals with the real time hardware implementation of discrete sliding mode fuzzy control (DSMFC) for buck converter using digital signal processor (DSP). Applications like electric vehicle suspension control, flight dynamic control, robot position control and engine throttle position control; sliding mode control (SMC) plays a major role. Hardware realization is difficult with SMC strategy due to the continuous gain change results in chattering problem and actuator or contact may break. To resolve this problem the fuzzy logic (FL) approach has combined with the robust technique discrete sliding mode control (DSMC) to develop a new strategy for DSMFC. The mathematical modeling of the controller is done using MATLAB/Simulink software and practical design of the converter is also realized. The robustness of the controller is proved by introducing sudden change in input voltage as well as load with the help of switching circuit in hardware realization. The obtained practical results are verified by comparing with the simulation output and reference value

    On-chip adaptive power management for WPT-Enabled IoT

    Internet of Things (IoT), as broadband network connecting every physical objects, is becoming more widely available in various industrial, medical, home and automotive applications. In such network, the physical devices, vehicles, medical assistance, and home appliances among others are supposed to be embedded by sensors, actuators, radio frequency (RF) antennas, memory, and microprocessors, such that these devices are able to exchange data and connect with other devices in the network. Among other IoT’s pillars, wireless sensor network (WSN) is one of the main parts comprising massive clusters of spatially distributed sensor nodes dedicated for sensing and monitoring environmental conditions. The lifetime of a WSN is greatly dependent on the lifetime of the small sensor nodes, which, in turn, is primarily dependent on energy availability within every sensor node. Predominantly, the main energy source for a sensor node is supplied by a small battery attached to it. In a large WSN with massive number of deployed sensor nodes, it becomes a challenge to replace the batteries of every single sensor node especially for sensor nodes deployed in harsh environments. Consequently, powering the sensor nodes becomes a key limiting issue, which poses important challenges for their practicality and cost. Therefore, in this thesis we propose enabling WSN, as the main pillar of IoT, by means of resonant inductive coupling (RIC) wireless power transfer (WPT). In order to enable efficient energy delivery at higher range, high quality factor RIC-WPT system is required in order to boost the magnetic flux generated at the transmitting coil. However, an adaptive front-end is essential for self-tuning the resonant tank against any mismatch in the components values, distance variation, and interference from close metallic objects. Consequently, the purpose of the thesis is to develop and design an adaptive efficient switch-mode front-end for self-tuning in WPT receivers in multiple receiver system. The thesis start by giving background about the IoT system and the technical bottleneck followed by the problem statement and thesis scope. Then, Chapter 2 provides detailed backgrounds about the RIC-WPT system. Specifically, Chapter 2 analyzes the characteristics of different compensation topologies in RIC-WPT followed by the implications of mistuning on efficiency and power transfer capability. Chapter 3 discusses the concept of switch-mode gyrators as a potential candidate for generic variable reactive element synthesis while different potential applications and design cases are provided. Chapter 4 proposes two different self-tuning control for WPT receivers that utilize switch-mode gyrators as variable reactive element synthesis. The performance aspects of control approaches are discussed and evaluated as well in Chapter 4. The development and exploration of more compact front-end for self-tuned WPT receiver is investigated in Chapter 5 by proposing a phase-controlled switched inductor converter. The operation and design details of different switch-mode phase-controlled topologies are given and evaluated in the same chapter. Finally, Chapter 6 provides the conclusions and highlight the contribution of the thesis, in addition to suggesting the related future research topics.Internet de las cosas (IoT), como red de banda ancha que interconecta cualquier cosa, se está estableciendo como una tecnología valiosa en varias aplicaciones industriales, médicas, domóticas y en el sector del automóvil. En dicha red, los dispositivos físicos, los vehículos, los sistemas de asistencia médica y los electrodomésticos, entre otros, incluyen sensores, actuadores, subsistemas de comunicación, memoria y microprocesadores, de modo que son capaces de intercambiar datos e interconectarse con otros elementos de la red. Entre otros pilares que posibilitan IoT, la red de sensores inalámbricos (WSN), que es una de las partes cruciales del sistema, está formada por un conjunto masivo de nodos de sensado distribuidos espacialmente, y dedicados a sensar y monitorizar las condiciones del contexto de las cosas interconectadas. El tiempo de vida útil de una red WSN depende estrechamente del tiempo de vida de los pequeños nodos sensores, los cuales, a su vez, dependen primordialmente de la disponibilidad de energía en cada nodo sensor. La fuente principal de energía para un nodo sensor suele ser una pequeña batería integrada en él. En una red WSN con muchos nodos y con una alta densidad, es un desafío el reemplazar las baterías de cada nodo sensor, especialmente en entornos hostiles, como puedan ser en escenarios de Industria 4.0. En consecuencia, la alimentación de los nodos sensores constituye uno de los cuellos de botella que limitan un despliegue masivo práctico y de bajo coste. A tenor de estas circunstancias, en esta tesis doctoral se propone habilitar las redes WSN, como pilar principal de sistemas IoT, mediante sistemas de transferencia inalámbrica de energía (WPT) basados en acoplamiento inductivo resonante (RIC). Con objeto de posibilitar el suministro eficiente de energía a mayores distancias, deben aumentarse los factores de calidad de los elementos inductivos resonantes del sistema RIC-WPT, especialmente con el propósito de aumentar el flujo magnético generado por el inductor transmisor de energía y su acoplamiento resonante en recepción. Sin embargo, dotar al cabezal electrónico que gestiona y condicionada el flujo de energía de capacidad adaptativa es esencial para conseguir la autosintonía automática del sistema acoplado y resonante RIC-WPT, que es muy propenso a la desintonía ante desajustes en los parámetros nominales de los componentes, variaciones de distancia entre transmisor y receptores, así como debido a la interferencia de objetos metálicos. Es por tanto el objetivo central de esta tesis doctoral el concebir, proponer, diseñar y validar un sistema de WPT para múltiples receptores que incluya funciones adaptativas de autosintonía mediante circuitos conmutados de alto rendimiento energético, y susceptible de ser integrado en un chip para el condicionamiento de energía en cada receptor de forma miniaturizada y desplegable de forma masiva. La tesis empieza proporcionando una revisión del estado del arte en sistemas de IoT destacando el reto tecnológico de la alimentación energética de los nodos sensores distribuidos y planteando así el foco de la tesis doctoral. El capítulo 2 sigue con una revisión crítica del statu quo de los sistemas de transferencia inalámbrica de energía RIC-WPT. Específicamente, el capítulo 2 analiza las características de diferentes estructuras circuitales de compensación en RIC-WPT seguido de una descripción crítica de las implicaciones de la desintonía en la eficiencia y la capacidad de transferencia energética del sistema.     Analysis And Design Optimization Of Multiphase Converter

    Future microprocessors pose many challenges to the power conversion techniques. Multiphase synchronous buck converters have been widely used in high current low voltage microprocessor application. Design optimization needs to be carefully carried out with pushing the envelope specification and ever increasing concentration towards power saving features. In this work, attention has been focused on dynamic aspects of multiphase synchronous buck design. The power related issues and optimizations have been comprehensively investigated in this paper. In the first chapter, multiphase DC-DC conversion is presented with background application. Adaptive voltage positioning and various nonlinear control schemes are evaluated. Design optimization are presented to achieve best static efficiency over the entire load range. Power loss analysis from various operation modes and driver IC definition are studied thoroughly to better understand the loss terms and minimize the power loss. Load adaptive control is then proposed together with parametric optimization to achieve optimum efficiency figure. New nonlinear control schemes are proposed to improve the transient response, i.e. load engage and load release responses, of the multiphase VR in low frequency repetitive transient. Drop phase optimization and PWM transition from long tri-state phase are presented to improve the smoothness and robustness of the VR in mode transition. During high frequency repetitive transient, the control loop should be optimized and nonlinear loop should be turned off. Dynamic current sharing are thoroughly studied in chapter 4. The output impedance of the multiphase v synchronous buck are derived to assist the analysis. Beat frequency is studied and mitigated by proposing load frequency detection scheme by turning OFF the nonlinear loop and introducing current protection in the control loop. Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is now used in modern Multi-Core processor (MCP) and multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) to reduce operational voltage under light load condition. With the aggressive motivation to boost dynamic power efficiency, the design specification of voltage transition (dv/dt) for the DVS is pushing the physical limitation of the multiphase converter design and the component stress as well. In this paper, the operation modes and modes transition during dynamic voltage transition are illustrated. Critical dead-times of driver IC design and system dynamics are first studied and then optimized. The excessive stress on the control MOSFET which increases the reliability concern is captured in boost mode operation. Feasible solutions are also proposed and verified by both simulation and experiment results. CdV/dt compensation for removing the AVP effect and novel nonlinear control scheme for smooth transition are proposed for dealing with fast voltage positioning. Optimum phase number control during dynamic voltage transition is also proposed and triggered by voltage identification (VID) delta to further reduce the dynamic loss. The proposed schemes are experimentally verified in a 200 W six phase synchronous buck converter. Finally, the work is concluded. The references are listed

    Comparación numérica y experimental de técnicas de control quasi-sliding, sliding y PID en un convertidor buck

    In this paper the Sliding Mode Control (SMC), PID and ZAD (Zero Average Dynamic) strategies are applied to an electronic DC-DC power converter. Time behavior for each controller is shown for numerical solution and experimental realization. The results in SMC and PID are contrasted with a ZAD-FPIC controller combined with a recently developed strategy named FPIC (Fixed Point Induction Control). Stability in SMC is guaranteed by the Lyapunov theorem. The PID controller is designed in an analytical way using pole placement. The main problem with the physical realization was the sample and hold in the variable acquisition system, in addition to time delay introduced by the computing process. From a practical point of view, the ZAD-FPIC technique has advantages no shown by PID and SMC working with sample and hold, these advantages have been corroborated experimentally. The designs have been tested in an RCP (Rapid Control Prototyping) system based on DSP from the dSPACE platform. Both numerical performance and experimental performance agree.En este artículo son aplicadas varias técnicas de control para un convertidor reductor DC-DC estas son: control por modos deslizantes (SMC), PID y promediado de dinámica cero (ZAD). El comportamiento en el tiempo para cada controlador es mostrado tanto numéricamente como experimentalmente. Los resultados de SMC y PID son contrastados con la estrategia de control ZAD-FPIC esta última es combinada con una reciente técnica de control llama FPIC (control por inducción al punto fijo). La estabilidad de SMC es garantizada mediante teorema de Lyapunov. El control PID es diseñado de forma analítica usando desplazamiento de polos. El principal problema en la realización experimental fue la velocidad de muestreo y retención de las variables adquiridas del sistema, adicionalmente el tiempo de retardo presente en los procesos de procesamiento. Desde el punto de vista práctico la técnica de control ZAD-FPIC tiene ventajas en comparación con PID y SMC cuando se trabaja con muestreo y retención, esas ventajas han sido corroboradas experimentalmente. Los experimentos han sido probados en sistema RCP (prototipo rápido de control) específicamente en una DSP de la compañía dSPACE, al final tanto los resultados de la simulación numérica y la experimental son muy similares

    Digital VLSI Implementation of Piecewise-Affine Controllers Based on Lattice Approach

    This paper presents a small, fast, low-power consumption solution for piecewise-affine (PWA) controllers. To achieve this goal, a digital architecture for very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits is proposed. The implementation is based on the simplest lattice form, which eliminates the point location problem of other PWA representations and is able to provide continuous PWA controllers defined over generic partitions of the input domain. The architecture is parameterized in terms of number of inputs, outputs, signal resolution, and features of the controller to be generated. The design flows for field-programmable gate arrays and application-specific integrated circuits are detailed. Several application examples of explicit model predictive controllers (such as an adaptive cruise control and the control of a buck-boost dc-dc converter) are included to illustrate the performance of the VLSI solution obtained with the proposed lattice-based architecture
