A janus-faced manipulation: an investigation of narratives constructed on the Amazon in the target and source contexts

O tradutor tem, então, a desafiadora tarefa de traduzir o traduzido. Quando acontece de o tradutor ser um nativo do país visitado, a tarefa torna-se ainda mais complexa, pois ele está retornando a seu contexto nacional uma perspectiva construída a partir de olhos estrangeiros. Este trabalho investiga uma dessas narrativas de viagem entitulada 'The world is burning - murder in the rain forest' (Alex Shoumatoff, 1990) e sua tradução 'O mundo em chamas - a devastação da Amazônia e a tragédia de Chico Mendes'. A metodologia adotada consiste em uma investigação descritiva do texto traduzido a fim de identificar os shifts (mudanças) em relação ao texto original, seguindo o modelo adotado por Kitty van Leuven-Zwart (1989,1990). As unidades de tradução são analisadas olhando-se os shifts que ocorrem em áreas como: escolha de itens lexicais individuais, transitividade, modalidade e estrutura temática (ordem de palavras). A análise move-se, então, para descrever como, através de 'shifts' na narrativa, a tradução brasileira reescreve a relação entre narrador / leitor e a imagem construída da Amazônia

Engineering Automation for Reliable Software Interim Progress Report (10/01/2000 - 09/30/2001)

Prepared for: U.S. Army Research Office P.O. Box 12211 Research Triangle Park, NC 27709-2211The objective of our effort is to develop a scientific basis for producing reliable software that is also flexible and cost effective for the DoD distributed software domain. This objective addresses the long term goals of increasing the quality of service provided by complex systems while reducing development risks, costs, and time. Our work focuses on "wrap and glue" technology based on a domain specific distributed prototype model. The key to making the proposed approach reliable, flexible, and cost-effective is the automatic generation of glue and wrappers based on a designer's specification. The "wrap and glue" approach allows system designers to concentrate on the difficult interoperability problems and defines solutions in terms of deeper and more difficult interoperability issues, while freeing designers from implementation details. Specific research areas for the proposed effort include technology enabling rapid prototyping, inference for design checking, automatic program generation, distributed real-time scheduling, wrapper and glue technology, and reliability assessment and improvement. The proposed technology will be integrated with past research results to enable a quantum leap forward in the state of the art for rapid prototyping.U. S. Army Research Office P.O. The Untiring Pen: Avienus’ Construction of a Voice

The fact that Avienus (ca. 305-375), murky and hard-to-handle translator and poet of constellations ('Arati Phaenomena'), mountain ranges ('Descriptio Orbis Terrae') and coastlines ('Ora Maritima'), is chiefly a translator of Greek originals has benefited him little in terms of scholarly interest. Yet his work shows some remarkable characteristics which both highlight his own particular style and assign him a place in late antique poetics. The aim of this paper is to see some of these broader poetical characteristics at work within a manageable section of his work: i.e. the way in which Avienus creates a literary 'persona'. We will be looking not only at the specific voice that is created, but also at the way this is achieved and the impact this has upon the ensuing didactic narrative. In several ways, we will see, Avienus’ pen was soaked in the ink of memory.Il fatto che Avieno (ca. 305-375), oscuro e complesso traduttore e poeta di costellazioni ('Arati Phaenomena'), catene montuose ('Descriptio Orbis Terrae') e coste ('Ora Maritima'), sia principalmente un traduttore di originali greci gli è valso uno scarso interesse da parte degli studiosi. Ciononostante, il suo lavoro mostra alcune caratteristiche notevoli che consentono allo stesso tempo di metterne in evidenza lo stile e di assegnargli un ruolo nella poetica della tarda antichità. Lo scopo di questo contributo è indagare alcune di queste caratteristiche poetiche generali in una parte definita della sua opera: il modo in cui Avieno crea una persona letteraria. Si osserverà non soltanto come la specifica voce viene creata, ma anche come si arriva a questo risultato e l’impatto che ciò ha sulla conseguente narrazione didattica. The 2001 Monterey Workshop on Engineering Automation for Software Intensive System Integration was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office and the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency. It is our pleasure to thank the workshop advisory and sponsors for their vision of a principled engineering solution for software and for their many-year tireless effort in supporting a series of workshops to bring everyone together.This workshop is the 8 in a series of International workshops. The workshop was held in Monterey Beach Hotel, Monterey, California during June 18-22, 2001. The general theme of the workshop has been to present and discuss research works that aims at increasing the practical impact of formal methods for software and systems engineering. My honors thesis The Art of Adaptation discusses the process of adapting old stories and theatrical pieces for modern audiences through the exploration of various adaptations (theatrical, operatic, dance and film) of Euripides\u27 Medea. It also touches on my own short, modern, adaptation; FURY: A Rock Musical Inspired by Medea. All of this research was important in making the performance aspect of my capstone the best it could be
