Weightless neural systems have often struggles in terms of speed, performances, and memory issues. There is also lack of sufficient interfacing of weightless neural systems to others systems. Addressing these issues motivates and forms the aims and objectives of this thesis. In addressing these issues, algorithms are formulated, classifiers, and multi-classifiers are designed, and hardware design of classifier are also reported. Specifically, the purpose of this thesis is to report on the algorithms and designs of weightless neural systems. A background material for the research is a weightless neural network known as Probabilistic Convergent Network (PCN). By introducing two new and different interfacing method, the word "Enhanced" is added to PCN thereby giving it the name Enhanced Probabilistic Convergent Network (EPCN). To solve the problem of speed and performances when large-class databases are employed in data analysis, multi-classifiers are designed whose composition vary depending on problem complexity. It also leads to the introduction of a novel gating function with application of EPCN as an intelligent combiner. For databases which are not very large, single classifiers suffices. Speed and ease of application in adverse condition were considered as improvement which has led to the design of EPCN in hardware. A novel hashing function is implemented and tested on hardware-based EPCN. Results obtained have indicated the utility of employing weightless neural systems. The results obtained also indicate significant new possible areas of application of weightless neural systems

Data mining reduction methods and performances of rules

In data mining the accuracy of models are associated with the strength of the rules. However, most machine learning techniques produce a large number of rules. The consequence is with large number of rules generated, processing time is much longer. This study examines rules of different lengths of attributes in terms of performance based on percentage of accuracy. The research adopts the Knowledge Discovery in Databases “KDD” methodology for analysis and applies various data mining techniques in the experiments.Data of 50 hardware dataset companies which, contains 31 attributes and 400 records have been used. In summary, results show that in terms of performance of rules, Genetic Algorithm has produced the highest number of rules followed by Johnson’s Algorithm and Holte’s 1R.The best classifier for extracting rules in this study is VOT (Voting of Object Tracking). In terms of performance of rules, best results comes from rules with 30 attributes, followed by rules with 1 intersection attribute and lastly rules with 3 intersection attributes. Among the three sets of attributes, the 3 intersection attributes are considered as the attributes that can be used as predictor attributes

LearnFCA: A Fuzzy FCA and Probability Based Approach for Learning and Classification

Formal concept analysis(FCA) is a mathematical theory based on lattice and order theory used for data analysis and knowledge representation. Over the past several years, many of its extensions have been proposed and applied in several domains including data mining, machine learning, knowledge management, semantic web, software development, chemistry ,biology, medicine, data analytics, biology and ontology engineering. This thesis reviews the state-of-the-art of theory of Formal Concept Analysis(FCA) and its various extensions that have been developed and well-studied in the past several years. We discuss their historical roots, reproduce the original definitions and derivations with illustrative examples. Further, we provide a literature review of it’s applications and various approaches adopted by researchers in the areas of dataanalysis, knowledge management with emphasis to data-learning and classification problems. We propose LearnFCA, a novel approach based on FuzzyFCA and probability theory for learning and classification problems. LearnFCA uses an enhanced version of FuzzyLattice which has been developed to store class labels and probability vectors and has the capability to be used for classifying instances with encoded and unlabelled features. We evaluate LearnFCA on encodings from three datasets - mnist, omniglot and cancer images with interesting results and varying degrees of success. Adviser: Dr Jitender Deogu
