    This dissertation reports the project work developed in the Thesis/Dissertation course during the 2nd year of the Master of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the field of Automation and Systems, Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE) at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP). The installation of an Air Handling Unit (AHU) in a work place or a hospital plays an important role in the treatment and maintaining the purity of air. The temperature control is focused in this dissertation. The AHU maintains the temperature of the room or office at a set temperature. The heating and cooling function are done automatically by taking in the reference temperature of the room also depending on the outdoor climate. The main purpose of the AHU is to ensure comfort to the patients, staffs and the employees. In case of the hospitals, the main function of AHU is air cleanliness in hygiene applications. It also includes supplying a sufficient amount of oxygen and removing the carbon dioxide and maintaining a comfortable room climate. They help protect patients and staff from infections. This dissertation will focus on the study of wide range of technologies which will work on the AHU with the Carel electronic controller whose main function is to control the temperature of an office. The unit was installed at Farfetch, Barco, Portugal. The study includes the working of selection criteria of the supply and return fans, inverters, recovery unit, probes, dampers and the controller

In about a decade, our surroundings been digitalized progressively and we are more reliant on electricity than before.Our power grid ought to advance rapidly to adjust the changes that are occurring in our undeniably computerized society. The best answer for this is Smart Grid.They give a more effective, dependable, environment and secure option to our current grid system. Smart grid will be equipped to restore itself after a power outage or a climate related blackout.Smart grids will depend on several new and different innovative technologies. These new technologies will join together with the current grid to make a more productive, efficient and intelligent grid system. Smart grids will depend incredibly on two-way communications. Employing communication technologies into smart grid is difficult task. There is ongoing research for deciding what should be the best communication for smart grid and PLC creates a great interest because, power lines are everywhere and there is no need of installation cost. Power lines will reach to the last mile but problem with it is the noise and this can be reduced by using techniques like OFDM and allows high data rates of data. This model is a combination of communication model, power line model and noise model. The communication model is realized as the OFDM system, power lines are modelled from the transfer function of multipath signal environment and noise model are modelled as white noise. Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks are used to estimate the channel by using gradient decent method

    The design and evaluation of a PLC-based model predictive controller for application in industrial food processes

    Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a viable control strategy for industrial processes that display relatively large variations in the process variable, have complex process variable interactions, or display a large amount of process deadtime. The objective of using MPC in manufacturing is to reduce overall process variability, the result being an increase in process accuracy, precision and efficiency. This study focused on the implementation of model predictive control techniques on an industrial sugar cooking process. The goal was to implement a successful MPC solution directly on a programmable logic controller (PLC) rather than on a personal computer (PC). Although there are many commercially available MPC controllers for implementation on a stand-alone PC, to date there are no control packages for realizing model-based control techniques directly on the ubiquitous PLC. This study implemented and evaluated three PC-based, commercial MPC technologies for the sugar cooking process, and a new model state feedback (MSF) MPC implementation directly on Rockwell Automation\u27s Allen-Bradley ControlLogix ® PLC. A standard proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control implementation was used as a baseline for comparing the MPC strategies. There were three main areas on which the overall comparative analysis focused. These comparison areas were the dynamic response of each strategy at startup, including both temperature rise time and overshoot, and the steady-state disturbance rejection capabilities of each strategy. The test results showed that the MPC strategies controlled the sugar cooking process better than the traditional PID control method in regards to temperature rise time, temperature overshoot, and disturbance rejection based on feed rate disturbances. It was seen that the differences between the various MPC strategies was not significant relative to temperature overshoot and disturbance rejection. The PLC-based MPC strategy was comparable, but not superior, to the PC-based commercial MPC applications. However, this strategy has several benefits such as requiring no external hardware, software, and communications protocols, which may result in a less expensive implementation than the commercial MPC strategies. The PLC-based strategy is also easier and cheaper to maintain because it is developed on the existing, well-known control platform with existing tools

    Data-Intensive Computing in Smart Microgrids

    Microgrids have recently emerged as the building block of a smart grid, combining distributed renewable energy sources, energy storage devices, and load management in order to improve power system reliability, enhance sustainable development, and reduce carbon emissions. At the same time, rapid advancements in sensor and metering technologies, wireless and network communication, as well as cloud and fog computing are leading to the collection and accumulation of large amounts of data (e.g., device status data, energy generation data, consumption data). The application of big data analysis techniques (e.g., forecasting, classification, clustering) on such data can optimize the power generation and operation in real time by accurately predicting electricity demands, discovering electricity consumption patterns, and developing dynamic pricing mechanisms.
