    Implementation and Comparison of Mobility Models in NS-2

    In the performance evaluation of a protocol for an ad hoc network, the protocol should be tested under realistic conditions including, but not limited to, a sensible transmission range, limited buffer space for the storage of messages, representative data traffic models, and realistic movements of the mobile users (i.e., a mobility model). Simulation is universally considered the most effective method of designing and evaluating new network protocols. When developing protocols for mobile networking, the chosen mobility model is one of the key determinants in the success of an accurate simulation. The main role of a mobility model is to mimic the movement behaviors of actual users. Given the critical role of the mobility model in supporting realistic and accurate protocol simulations, its correct design and selection is essential .We have described 3 mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are independent of each other (i.e., entity mobility models). Lastly, we present simulation results that illustrate the importance of choosing a mobility model in the simulation of an ad hoc network protocol. Specifically, we illustrate how the performance results of an ad hoc network protocol drastically change as a result of changing the mobility model simulated

    Reliability of Mobile Agents for Reliable Service Discovery Protocol in MANET

    Recently mobile agents are used to discover services in mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) where agents travel through the network, collecting and sometimes spreading the dynamically changing service information. But it is important to investigate how reliable the agents are for this application as the dependability issues(reliability and availability) of MANET are highly affected by its dynamic nature.The complexity of underlying MANET makes it hard to obtain the route reliability of the mobile agent systems (MAS); instead we estimate it using Monte Carlo simulation. Thus an algorithm for estimating the task route reliability of MAS (deployed for discovering services) is proposed, that takes into account the effect of node mobility in MANET. That mobility pattern of the nodes affects the MAS performance is also shown by considering different mobility models. Multipath propagation effect of radio signal is considered to decide link existence. Transient link errors are also considered. Finally we propose a metric to calculate the reliability of service discovery protocol and see how MAS performance affects the protocol reliability. The experimental results show the robustness of the proposed algorithm. Here the optimum value of network bandwidth (needed to support the agents) is calculated for our application. However the reliability of MAS is highly dependent on link failure probability

    Building Realistic Mobility Models for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self-configuring wireless network in which each node could act as a router, as well as a data source or sink. Its application areas include battlefields and vehicular and disaster areas. Many techniques applied to infrastructure-based networks are less effective in MANETs, with routing being a particular challenge. This paper presents a rigorous study into simulation techniques for evaluating routing solutions for MANETs with the aim of producing more realistic simulation models and thereby, more accurate protocol evaluations. MANET simulations require models that reflect the world in which the MANET is to operate. Much of the published research uses movement models, such as the random waypoint (RWP) model, with arbitrary world sizes and node counts. This paper presents a technique for developing more realistic simulation models to test and evaluate MANET protocols. The technique is animation, which is applied to a realistic scenario to produce a model that accurately reflects the size and shape of the world, node count, movement patterns, and time period over which the MANET may operate. The animation technique has been used to develop a battlefield model based on established military tactics. Trace data has been used to build a model of maritime movements in the Irish Sea. Similar world models have been built using the random waypoint movement model for comparison. All models have been built using the ns-2 simulator. These models have been used to compare the performance of three routing protocols: dynamic source routing (DSR), destination-sequenced distance-vector routing (DSDV), and ad hoc n-demand distance vector routing (AODV). The findings reveal that protocol performance is dependent on the model used. In particular, it is shown that RWP models do not reflect the performance of these protocols under realistic circumstances, and protocol selection is subject to the scenario to which it is applied. To conclude, it is possible to develop a range of techniques for modelling scenarios applicable to MANETs, and these simulation models could be utilised for the evaluation of routing protocols

    Performance of ad hoc networks with two-hop relay routing and limited packet lifetime (extended version)

    We consider a mobile ad hoc network consisting of three types of nodes (source, destination and relay nodes) and using the two-hop relay routing. This type of routing takes advantage of the mobility and the storage capacity of the nodes, called the relay nodes, in order to route packets between a source and a destination. Packets at relay nodes are assumed to have a limited lifetime in the network. Nodes are moving inside a bounded region according to some random mobility model. Closed-form expressions and asymptotic results when the number of nodes is large are provided for the packet delivery delay and for the energy needed to transmit a packet from the source to its destination. We also introduce and evaluate a variant of the two-hop relay protocol that limits the number of generated copies in the network. Our model is validated through simulations for two mobility models (random waypoint and random direction mobility models), and the performance of the two-hop routing and of the epidemic routing protocols are compared.\ud \u

    Benchmarking Wireless Network Protocols: Threat and Challenge Analysis of the AeroRP

    To accommodate the unique conditions of mobile wireless networks, numerous protocols have been designed. Protocols are initially tested through simulation software, but often under non-realistic conditions, using simple or even ideal wireless environments not usually found in the real world. Without challenges and channel impairments, such simulations cannot accurately determine the advantages and disadvantages of the protocol nor can a reliable comparison be made between the performance of any two protocols. New protocols must be tested in a manner consistent with legacy protocols so they can be accurately compared and improved upon. The contributions of this thesis are a set of models that can create more realistic and challenging simulations, including a 3-D implementation of the Gauss-Markov mobility model, and a set of benchmarks that can be used to test the strengths and weaknesses of wireless routing protocols. These benchmarks are then applied to several MANET protocols including AODV, DSR, OLSR, DSDV, and AeroRP that is part of the Aero protocol stack developed at The University of Kansas. AeroRP outperforms the traditional MANET routing protocols in benchmarks that involve either highly-dynamic networks or disruptions in connectivity
