    Gaze and Gestures in Telepresence: multimodality, embodiment, and roles of collaboration

    This paper proposes a controlled experiment to further investigate the usefulness of gaze awareness and gesture recognition in the support of collaborative work at a distance.     Annotations of maps in collaborative work at a distance

    This thesis inquires how map annotations can be used to sustain remote collaboration. Maps condense the interplay of space and communication, solving linguistic references by linking conversational content to the actual places to which it refers. This is a mechanism people are accustomed to. When we are face-to-face, we can point to things around us. However, at a distance, we need to recreate a context that can help disambiguate what we mean. A map can help recreate this context. However other technological solutions are required to allow deictic gestures over a shared map when collaborators are not co-located. This mechanism is here termed Explicit Referencing. Several systems that allow sharing maps annotations are reviewed critically. A taxonomy is then proposed to compare their features. Two filed experiments were conducted to investigate the production of collaborative annotations of maps with mobile devices, looking for the reasons why people might want to produce these notes and how they might do so. Both studies led to very disappointing results. The reasons for this failure are attributed to the lack of a critical mass of users (social network), the lack of useful content, and limited social awareness. More importantly, the study identified a compelling effect of the way messages were organized in the tested application, which caused participants to refrain from engaging in content-driven explorations and synchronous discussions. This last qualitative observation was refined in a controlled experiment where remote participants had to solve a problem collaboratively, using chat tools that differed in the way a user could relate an utterance to a shared map. Results indicated that team performance is improved by the Explicit Referencing mechanisms. However, when this is implemented in a way that is detrimental to the linearity of the conversation, resulting in the visual dispersion or scattering of messages, its use has negative consequences for collaborative work at a distance. Additionally, an analysis of the eye movements of the participants over the map helped to ascertain the interplay of deixis and gaze in collaboration. A primary relation was found between the pair's recurrence of eye movements and their task performance. Finally, this thesis presents an algorithm that detects misunderstandings in collaborative work at a distance. It analyses the movements of collaborators' eyes over the shared map, their utterances containing references to this workspace, and the availability of "remote" deictic gestures. The algorithm associates the distance between the gazes of the emitter and gazes of the receiver of a message with the probability that the recipient did not understand the message

    Gaze Awareness in Computer-Mediated Collaborative Physical Tasks

    Human eyes play an important role in everyday social interactions. However, the cues provided by eye movements are often missing or difficult to interpret in computer-mediated remote collaboration. Motivated by the increasing availability of gaze-tracking devices in the consumer market and the growing need for improved remotecollaboration systems, this thesis evaluated the value of gaze awareness in a number of video-based remote-collaboration situations. This thesis comprises six publications which enhance our understanding of the everyday use of gaze-tracking technology and the value of shared gaze to remote collaborations in the physical world. The studies focused on a variety of collaborative scenarios involving different camera configurations (stationary, handheld, and head-mounted cameras), display setups (screen-based and projection displays), mobility requirements (stationary and mobile tasks), and task characteristics (pointing and procedural tasks). The aim was to understand the costs and benefits of shared gaze in video-based collaborative physical tasks. The findings suggest that gaze awareness is useful in remote collaboration for physical tasks. Shared gaze enables efficient communication of spatial information, helps viewers to predict task-relevant intentions, and enables improved situational awareness. However, different contextual factors can influence the utility of shared gaze. Shared gaze was more useful when the collaborative task involved communicating pointing information instead of procedural information, the collaborators were mutually aware of the shared gaze, and the quality of gaze-tracking was accurate enough to meet the task requirements. In addition, the results suggest that the collaborators’ roles can also affect the perceived utility of shared gaze. Methodologically, this thesis sets a precedent in shared gaze research by reporting the objective gaze data quality achieved in the studies and also provides tools for other researchers to objectively view gaze data quality in different research phases. The findings of this thesis can contribute towards designing future remote-collaboration systems; towards the vision of pervasive gaze-based interaction; and towards improved validity, repeatability, and comparability of research involving gaze trackers

    Realtourist - a study of augmenting human-human and human-computer dialogue with eye-gaze overlay

    Abstract. We developed and studied an experimental system, RealTourist, which lets a user to plan a conference trip with the help of a remote tourist consultant who could view the tourist’s eye-gaze superimposed onto a shared map. Data collected from the experiment were analyzed in conjunction with literature review on speech and eye-gaze patterns. This inspective, exploratory research identified various functions of gaze-overlay on shared spatial material including: accurate and direct display of partner’s eye-gaze, implicit deictic referencing, interest detection, common focus and topic switching, increased redundancy and ambiguity reduction, and an increase of assurance, confidence, and understanding. This study serves two purposes. The first is to identify patterns that can serve as a basis for designing multimodal human-computer dialogue systems with eye-gaze locus as a contributing channel. The second is to investigate how computer-mediated communication can be supported by the display of the partner’s eye-gaze.
