    An experimental synthetic aperture SONAR

    Get PDF
Aperture synthesis is a mature technique that has been used with success in a number of remote sensing fields. Sonars can also potentially benefit from the technique, though to date the limitations of slow acoustic propagation and difficulty in maintaining a stable platform has hindered investigation. This thesis investigates aperture synthesis for high resolution underwater imaging. A prototype sonar is designed and fabricated for the study. The performance of the sonar is assessed in both tank and sea trials and the results presented in this thesis

Synthetic Aperture Techniques for Sonar Systems

Today a good percentage of our planet is known and well mapped. Synthetic aperture techniques used in space and airborne systems has greatly aided to obtain this information. Nevertheless our planet is mostly covered by water and the level of detail of knowledge about this segment is still very far away from that of the land segment

Experimental Synthetic Aperture Radar with Dynamic Metasurfaces

We investigate the use of a dynamic metasurface as the transmitting antenna for a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system. The dynamic metasurface consists of a one-dimensional microstrip waveguide with complementary electric resonator (cELC) elements patterned into the upper conductor. Integrated into each of the cELCs are two diodes that can be used to shift each cELC resonance out of band with an applied voltage. The aperture is designed to operate at K band frequencies (17.5 to 20.3 GHz), with a bandwidth of 2.8 GHz. We experimentally demonstrate imaging with a fabricated metasurface aperture using existing SAR modalities, showing image quality comparable to traditional antennas. The agility of this aperture allows it to operate in spotlight and stripmap SAR modes, as well as in a third modality inspired by computational imaging strategies. We describe its operation in detail, demonstrate high-quality imaging in both 2D and 3D, and examine various trade-offs governing the integration of dynamic metasurfaces in future SAR imaging platforms

The demand to explore the largest and also one of the richest parts of our planet, the advances in signal processing promoted by an exponential growth in computation power and a thorough study of sound propagation in the underwater realm, have lead to remarkable advances in sonar technology in the last years. The work on hand is a sum of knowledge of several authors who contributed in various aspects of sonar technology. This book intends to give a broad overview of the advances in sonar technology of the last years that resulted from the research effort of the authors in both sonar systems and their applications. It is intended for scientist and engineers from a variety of backgrounds and even those that never had contact with sonar technology before will find an easy introduction with the topics and principles exposed here

    Sonar systems for object recognition

The deep sea exploration and exploitation is one of the biggest challenges of the next century. Military, oil & gas, o shore wind farming, underwater mining, oceanography are some of the actors interested in this eld. The engineering and technical challenges to perform any tasks underwater are great but the most crucial element in any underwater systems has to be the sensors. In air numerous sensor systems have been developed: optic cameras, laser scanner or radar systems. Unfortunately electro magnetic waves propagate poorly in water, therefore acoustic sensors are a much preferred tool then optical ones. This thesis is dedicated to the study of the present and the future of acoustic sensors for detection, identi cation or survey. We will explore several sonar con gurations and designs and their corresponding models for target scattering. We will show that object echoes can contain essential information concerning its structure and/or composition

From Statistical Detection to Decision Fusion: Detection of Underwater Mines in High Resolution SAS Images

ISBN 978-3-902613-48-6Many approaches have been proposed in underwater mine detection and classification using sonar images. The goal is to evaluate a confidence that a pixel belongs to a sought object or to the seabed. In the following, considering the object characteristics (size, reflectivity), we will always assume that the detected objects are actual mines. We propose a detection method structured as a data fusion system. This type of architecture is a smart and adaptive structure: the addition or removal of parameters is easily taken into account, without any modification of the global structure. The inputs of the proposed system are the parameters extracted from an SAS image (statistical in our case). The outputs of the system are the areas detected as potentially including an object
