    Localization of sound sources : a systematic review

    Sound localization is a vast field of research and advancement which is used in many useful applications to facilitate communication, radars, medical aid, and speech enhancement to but name a few. Many different methods are presented in recent times in this field to gain benefits. Various types of microphone arrays serve the purpose of sensing the incoming sound. This paper presents an overview of the importance of using sound localization in different applications along with the use and limitations of ad-hoc microphones over other microphones. In order to overcome these limitations certain approaches are also presented. Detailed explanation of some of the existing methods that are used for sound localization using microphone arrays in the recent literature is given. Existing methods are studied in a comparative fashion along with the factors that influence the choice of one method over the others. This review is done in order to form a basis for choosing the best fit method for our use

    Gravitational Clustering: A Simple, Robust and Adaptive Approach for Distributed Networks

    Distributed signal processing for wireless sensor networks enables that different devices cooperate to solve different signal processing tasks. A crucial first step is to answer the question: who observes what? Recently, several distributed algorithms have been proposed, which frame the signal/object labelling problem in terms of cluster analysis after extracting source-specific features, however, the number of clusters is assumed to be known. We propose a new method called Gravitational Clustering (GC) to adaptively estimate the time-varying number of clusters based on a set of feature vectors. The key idea is to exploit the physical principle of gravitational force between mass units: streaming-in feature vectors are considered as mass units of fixed position in the feature space, around which mobile mass units are injected at each time instant. The cluster enumeration exploits the fact that the highest attraction on the mobile mass units is exerted by regions with a high density of feature vectors, i.e., gravitational clusters. By sharing estimates among neighboring nodes via a diffusion-adaptation scheme, cooperative and distributed cluster enumeration is achieved. Numerical experiments concerning robustness against outliers, convergence and computational complexity are conducted. The application in a distributed cooperative multi-view camera network illustrates the applicability to real-world problems.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    A Hybrid Global Minimization Scheme for Accurate Source Localization in Sensor Networks

    We consider the localization problem of multiple wideband sources in a multi-path environment by coherently taking into account the attenuation characteristics and the time delays in the reception of the signal. Our proposed method leaves the space for unavailability of an accurate signal attenuation model in the environment by considering the model as an unknown function with reasonable prior assumptions about its functional space. Such approach is capable of enhancing the localization performance compared to only utilizing the signal attenuation information or the time delays. In this paper, the localization problem is modeled as a cost function in terms of the source locations, attenuation model parameters and the multi-path parameters. To globally perform the minimization, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining the differential evolution algorithm with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Besides the proposed combination of optimization schemes, supporting the technical details such as closed forms of cost function sensitivity matrices are provided. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is examined in several localization scenarios, taking into account the noise in the environment, the multi-path phenomenon and considering the sensors not being synchronized

    Design exploration and performance strategies towards power-efficient FPGA-based achitectures for sound source localization

    Many applications rely on MEMS microphone arrays for locating sound sources prior to their execution. Those applications not only are executed under real-time constraints but also are often embedded on low-power devices. These environments become challenging when increasing the number of microphones or requiring dynamic responses. Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are usually chosen due to their flexibility and computational power. This work intends to guide the design of reconfigurable acoustic beamforming architectures, which are not only able to accurately determine the sound Direction-Of-Arrival (DoA) but also capable to satisfy the most demanding applications in terms of power efficiency. Design considerations of the required operations performing the sound location are discussed and analysed in order to facilitate the elaboration of reconfigurable acoustic beamforming architectures. Performance strategies are proposed and evaluated based on the characteristics of the presented architecture. This power-efficient architecture is compared to a different architecture prioritizing performance in order to reveal the unavoidable design trade-offs

    Optimized Acoustic Localization with SRP-PHAT for Monitoring in Distributed Sensor Networks

    Acoustic localization by means of sensor arrays has a variety of applications, from conference telephony to environment monitoring. Many of these tasks are appealing for implementation on embedded systems, however large dataflows and computational complexity of multi-channel signal processing impede the development of such systems. This paper proposes a method of acoustic localization targeted for distributed systems, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The method builds on an optimized localization algorithm of Steered Response Power with Phase Transform (SRP-PHAT) and simplifies it further by reducing the initial search region, in which the sound source is contained. The sensor array is partitioned into sub-blocks, which may be implemented as independent nodes of WSN. For the region reduction two approaches are handled. One is based on Direction of Arrival estimation and the other - on multilateration. Both approaches are tested on real signals for speaker localization and industrial machinery monitoring applications. Experiment results indicate the method’s potency in both these tasks

    Multi-Step Knowledge-Aided Iterative ESPRIT for Direction Finding

    In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for DOA estimation which iteratively reduces the disturbance factors of the estimated data covariance matrix and incorporates prior knowledge which is gradually obtained on line. An analysis of the MSE of the reshaped data covariance matrix is carried out along with comparisons between computational complexities of the proposed and existing algorithms.
