    Current issue in corporate waqf in Malaysia

    Corporate waqf is still new for the contemporary Islamic studies in Malaysia. There are limited resources and guidance to explain about corporate waqf. The purposes of this study are to explore the issues, concept and development of corporate waqf. Current structure for corporate waqf also being explored as part of case studies. This paper provides several perspectives and suggestions to this issue. The methodology for this study is secondary data approach by using the data analysis from the related journal and paper. The subject for this study is Selangor Muamalat. This paper come out with the concept and development of the contemporary waqf focused on corporate waqf and there are five current issues identified in the contemporary waqf. Next, seven proposed action plans are suggested to cover the issues. Lastly, the structure of Selangor Muamalat is analyses by focusing on the management structure, financial and operational framework and the Shariah consideration towards Selangor Muamalat structure

    Fixtureless automated incremental sheet metal forming

    Die-based forming is a technology used by many industries to form metal panels. However, this method of forming lacks flexibility and cost effectiveness. In such cases, manual panel beating is typically undertaken for incremental forming of metal panels. Manual panel forming is a highly skilled operation with very little documentation and is disappearing due to non-observance and a lack of interest. Confederation of British Metal forming (CBM) and Institution of Sheet Metal Engineering (ISME) have realised the need for capturing and understanding manual skills used by panel beaters to preserve the knowledge. At the same time, industries seek for alternative panel forming solutions to produce high quality and cost-effective parts at low volume and reduce the repetitive, yet adaptive parts of the panel forming process to free up skilled workers to concentrate on the forming activities that are more difficult to automate. Incremental forming technologies, currently in practice, lack adaptability as they require substantial fixtures and dedicated tools. In this research a new proof-of-concept fixtureless automated sheet metal forming approach was developed on the basis of human skills captured from panel beaters. The proposed novel approach, named Mechatroforming®, consists of integrated mechanisms to form simple sheet metal parts by manipulating the workpiece using a robotic arm under a repetitive hammering tool. Predictive motion planning based on FEA was analysed and the manual forming skills were captured using a motion capture system. This facilitated the coordinated hammering and motion of the part to produce the intended shape accurately. A 3D measurement system with a vertical resolution of 50μm was also deployed to monitor the formation of the parts and make corrections to the forming path if needed. Therefore, the developed mechatronic system is highly adjustable by robotic motion and was closed loop via the 3D measurement system. The developed automated system has been tested rigorously, initially for bowl shape parts to prove the principle. The developed system which is 98% repeatable for depth and diameter, is able to produce targeted bowl shape parts with ±1% dimensional accuracy, high surface quality, and uniform material thickness of 0.95mm when tested with aluminium. It is envisaged that by further research, the proposed approach can be extended to form irregular and more complicated shapes that are highly in demand in various industries

    Surface and Sub-Surface Analyses for Bridge Inspection

    The development of bridge inspection solutions has been discussed in the recent past. In this dissertation, significant development and improvement on the state-of-the-art in the field of bridge inspection using multiple sensors (e.g. ground penetrating radar (GPR) and visual sensor) has been proposed. In the first part of this research (discussed in chapter 3), the focus is towards developing effective and novel methods for rebar detection and localization for sub-surface bridge inspection of steel rebars. The data has been collected using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) sensor on real bridge decks. In this regard, a number of different approaches have been successively developed that continue to improve the state-of-the-art in this particular research area. The second part (discussed in chapter 4) of this research deals with the development of an automated system for steel bridge defect detection system using a Multi-Directional Bicycle Robot. The training data has been acquired from actual bridges in Vietnam and validation is performed on data collected using Bicycle Robot from actual bridge located in Highway-80, Lovelock, Nevada, USA. A number of different proposed methods have been discussed in chapter 4. The final chapter of the dissertation will conclude the findings from the different parts and discuss ways of improving on the existing works in the near future

    Evaluation of new technologies to support asset management of metro systems

    Since 1930, London Underground Limited (LUL) has performed visual inspections to understand the condition of the physical assets such as tunnels, bridges and structures. The major problem with this kind of inspection is the lack in quality of the data, as it depends on the ability of the inspector to assess and interpret the condition of the asset both accurately and with repeatability. In addition, data collection is time-consuming and, therefore, costly when the whole of the metro network needs to be regularly inspected and there are limited periods when access is available. The problems associated with access to the infrastructure have increased significantly with the implementation of the night tube and will increase further as the night tube is extended over the next 5 to 10 years. To determine the condition of metro assets and to predict the need for intervention, monitoring the changes in the assets’ condition is key to any further evaluation and maintenance planning. This thesis presents the outcomes of using new technologies such as Thermography, Kinematic and Static Laser Scanning, Close-Range Photogrammetry and Total Station to measure defects, such as water seepage, mortar loss in joints, lining face loss (in brick tunnels), cracks, corrosion, voids, cavities and spalls. Each technique is explored through three case studies that evaluate the performance and limitation in the determination of the asset condition. The first case study was performed to compare and contrast the use of Euroconsult’s high definition laser survey against a Principal Inspection Report to determine the level of consistency in predicting the asset condition. During this case study, reports from laser surveys and principal inspections of brick tunnels and covered ways were compared. This analysis showed that a direct comparison between the two inspections is not appropriate because the laser inspection does not capture all the defects mentioned in the Engineering Standard S1060. It also showed that to close the gap between the laser survey and visual inspection, laser surveys would have to be performed every year in brick tunnels and then compare any changes in asset condition with that from the previous scan. The second case study was performed using Infrared Thermography (IRT) to identify water seepage in the brick tunnels as well as test the system in a configuration that would allow the survey to be done from an engineering train. A set of calibration tests were performed in the lab and later the technique was trialled on an engineering train. The results showed that it is possible to measure the level of moisture on specific parts of the lining and that the comparison of surveys performed at different times can allow asset managers to react before a seepage is established, potentially reducing the risk of system disruption caused by water ingress in tunnels. The data also revealed that this technique could be used for other purposes, such as examining the condition of other assets such as brackets, cable supports and broken light bulbs. The third case study was performed using a Terrestrial Laser Scanner, Close-Range Photogrammetry and Total Station Survey to identify defects in structures. In order to test these technologies, a wing wall, located on the north-east wing of the HC3 underbridge at Ladbroke Grove Station, was chosen. This case study demonstrated that LUL can easily implement this type of technology to inspect rapidly their buildings and structures, being able to identify defects and monitor their assets for translation, rotation and changes in shape during changes in loading or the decay of the structure (insidious decline) and the construction of nearby assets. In this research, a large volume of data was captured, and further work is needed in order to manage the data using ‘big data’ concepts. Although it may not be possible to fully understand the insidious decline of an asset, the use of these techniques allows us to better understand how a civil asset behaves, potentially reducing the amount of reactive maintenance to a minimum, consequently reducing service costs and falls in revenue due to disruptions in the system. To successfully analyse the data from new technologies a combination of skills is required and different or retrained personal will be needed

    The objectives of this project are; to study the failure of steam trap in plant (PPMSB) and determine the root cause of the problem. Previously, according to the data that had been collected, the numbers of failure rate of steam trap in plant are too high. The intention of this project is to analyze the existing problem of steam trap in the plant and finally come out with the solution to make sure the numbers failure rate of steam trap will be reduced. This is very important to increase the efficiency of steam trap to remove condensate, air and other non-condensable gases, while not losing any live steam. Besides, this project also will focus on the function and the working principle of steam trap. Area 5 (utilities) on Production Services Department (PSD) is selected as data references which is located at PETRONAS Penapisan melaka (PPMSB). Steam trap is the equipment function to trap the live steam and to remove condensate, air and other non-condensable gases. Basically there have three common types of steam trap which is Mechanical steam trap, Thermostatic steam trap and Thermodynamic steam trap. All of these types have same function but different characteristic and working principle. In completing this project some of the experiment and trouble shooting have been done in order to identify the steam trap failure. Some calculation also will be involved to calculate the piping arrangement of steam trap. Microsoft office Excel and other engineering software such as ANSYS will be utilized to analyze the steam trap data and to do steam trap simulation. Other methods such as research from the internet, journals and thesis will be used for reference purposes

    Development of Non-Destructive Testing by Eddy Currents for Highly Demanding Engineering Applications

    Defect detection with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is essential in accidents prevention, requiring R&TD to generate new scientific and procedural knowledge for new products with high safety requirements. A current challenge lies in the detection of surface and sub-surface micro defects with NDT by Eddy Currents (EC). The main objective of this work was the development of applied research, technological innovation and experimental validation of EC customized systems for three highly demanding inspection scenarios: micro defects in tubular geometries; brazed joints for the automotive industry; and high-speed moving composite materials. This objective implied starting from the scientific fundamentals of NDT by EC to design and simulate EC probes and the prototypes developed were tested in industrial environment, reaching a TRL ≈ 5. Another objective, of a more scientific and disruptive nature, was to test a new technique for the creation of EC in the materials to be inspect, named Magnetic Permeability Pattern Substrate (MPPS). This technique consists on the development of substrates/films with patterns of different magnetic permeabilities rather than the use of excitation bobbin coils or filaments of complex geometry. The experimental results demonstrated that the prototypes developed for the three industrial applications studied outperformed the state of the art, allowing the detection of target defects with a very good signal-to-noise ratio: in tubular geometries defects with depth of 0.5 mm and thickness of 0.2 mm in any scanning position; in the laser brazed weld beads pores with 0.13 mm diameter and internal artificial defects 1 mm from the weld surface; in composite materials defects under 1 mm at speeds up to 4 m/s and 3 mm lift-off. The numerical simulations assisted the probe design, allowing to describe and characterize electrical and magnetic phenomena. The new MPPS concept for the introduction of EC was validated numerically and experimentally

    The Legacy of Space Shuttle Flight Software

    The initial goals of the Space Shuttle Program required that the avionics and software systems blaze new trails in advancing avionics system technology. Many of the requirements placed on avionics and software were accomplished for the first time on this program. Examples include comprehensive digital fly-by-wire technology, use of a digital databus for flight critical functions, fail operational/fail safe requirements, complex automated redundancy management, and the use of a high-order software language for flight software development. In order to meet the operational and safety goals of the program, the Space Shuttle software had to be extremely high quality, reliable, robust, reconfigurable and maintainable. To achieve this, the software development team evolved a software process focused on continuous process improvement and defect elimination that consistently produced highly predictable and top quality results, providing software managers the confidence needed to sign each Certificate of Flight Readiness (COFR). This process, which has been appraised at Capability Maturity Model (CMM)/Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 5, has resulted in one of the lowest software defect rates in the industry. This paper will present an overview of the evolution of the Primary Avionics Software System (PASS) project and processes over thirty years, an argument for strong statistical control of software processes with examples, an overview of the success story for identifying and driving out errors before flight, a case study of the few significant software issues and how they were either identified before flight or slipped through the process onto a flight vehicle, and identification of the valuable lessons learned over the life of the project

    Non-Destructive Methods for the Detection of Delaminations in Concrete Bridge Decks

    To detect delaminations in concrete bridge decks, the non-destructive techniques (NDT) permit a frequent inspection of the slabs without damaging the structures. Within this study, twelve samples were realized, presenting diverse horizontal defects simulating delaminations. They were scanned with high frequency GPR with the common offset (CO) and common mid point (CMP) methods. The electromagnetic waves speed and defects depth were determined from the CMPs. A 3D visualization program was also created to display the CO measurements. The visibility of the inserted defects revealed to be dependent on their lateral extension, their thickness and especially their constitutive material
