Strengthening the Effectiveness of Pedestrian Detection with Spatially Pooled Features
We propose a simple yet effective approach to the problem of pedestrian
detection which outperforms the current state-of-the-art. Our new features are
built on the basis of low-level visual features and spatial pooling.
Incorporating spatial pooling improves the translational invariance and thus
the robustness of the detection process. We then directly optimise the partial
area under the ROC curve (\pAUC) measure, which concentrates detection
performance in the range of most practical importance. The combination of these
factors leads to a pedestrian detector which outperforms all competitors on all
of the standard benchmark datasets. We advance state-of-the-art results by
lowering the average miss rate from to on the INRIA benchmark,
to on the ETH benchmark, to on the TUD-Brussels

Robust Head-Pose Estimation Based on Partially-Latent Mixture of Linear Regressions
Head-pose estimation has many applications, such as social event analysis,
human-robot and human-computer interaction, driving assistance, and so forth.
Head-pose estimation is challenging because it must cope with changing
illumination conditions, variabilities in face orientation and in appearance,
partial occlusions of facial landmarks, as well as bounding-box-to-face
alignment errors. We propose tu use a mixture of linear regressions with
partially-latent output. This regression method learns to map high-dimensional
feature vectors (extracted from bounding boxes of faces) onto the joint space
of head-pose angles and bounding-box shifts, such that they are robustly
predicted in the presence of unobservable phenomena. We describe in detail the
mapping method that combines the merits of unsupervised manifold learning
techniques and of mixtures of regressions. We validate our method with three
publicly available datasets and we thoroughly benchmark four variants of the
proposed algorithm with several state-of-the-art head-pose estimation methods.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
Activity Recognition based on a Magnitude-Orientation Stream Network
The temporal component of videos provides an important clue for activity
recognition, as a number of activities can be reliably recognized based on the
motion information. In view of that, this work proposes a novel temporal stream
for two-stream convolutional networks based on images computed from the optical
flow magnitude and orientation, named Magnitude-Orientation Stream (MOS), to
learn the motion in a better and richer manner. Our method applies simple
nonlinear transformations on the vertical and horizontal components of the
optical flow to generate input images for the temporal stream. Experimental
results, carried on two well-known datasets (HMDB51 and UCF101), demonstrate
that using our proposed temporal stream as input to existing neural network
architectures can improve their performance for activity recognition. Results
demonstrate that our temporal stream provides complementary information able to
improve the classical two-stream methods, indicating the suitability of our

The Incremental Multiresolution Matrix Factorization Algorithm
Multiresolution analysis and matrix factorization are foundational tools in
computer vision. In this work, we study the interface between these two
distinct topics and obtain techniques to uncover hierarchical block structure
in symmetric matrices -- an important aspect in the success of many vision
problems. Our new algorithm, the incremental multiresolution matrix
factorization, uncovers such structure one feature at a time, and hence scales
well to large matrices. We describe how this multiscale analysis goes much
farther than what a direct global factorization of the data can identify. We
evaluate the efficacy of the resulting factorizations for relative leveraging
within regression tasks using medical imaging data. We also use the
factorization on representations learned by popular deep networks, providing
evidence of their ability to infer semantic relationships even when they are
not explicitly trained to do so. We show that this algorithm can be used as an
exploratory tool to improve the network architecture, and within numerous other

GOGGLES: Automatic Image Labeling with Affinity Coding
Generating large labeled training data is becoming the biggest bottleneck in
building and deploying supervised machine learning models. Recently, the data
programming paradigm has been proposed to reduce the human cost in labeling
training data. However, data programming relies on designing labeling functions
which still requires significant domain expertise. Also, it is prohibitively
difficult to write labeling functions for image datasets as it is hard to
express domain knowledge using raw features for images (pixels).
We propose affinity coding, a new domain-agnostic paradigm for automated
training data labeling. The core premise of affinity coding is that the
affinity scores of instance pairs belonging to the same class on average should
be higher than those of pairs belonging to different classes, according to some
affinity functions. We build the GOGGLES system that implements affinity coding
for labeling image datasets by designing a novel set of reusable affinity
functions for images, and propose a novel hierarchical generative model for
class inference using a small development set.
We compare GOGGLES with existing data programming systems on 5 image labeling
tasks from diverse domains. GOGGLES achieves labeling accuracies ranging from a
minimum of 71% to a maximum of 98% without requiring any extensive human
annotation. In terms of end-to-end performance, GOGGLES outperforms the
state-of-the-art data programming system Snuba by 21% and a state-of-the-art
few-shot learning technique by 5%, and is only 7% away from the fully
