    The wide availability of mobile devices capable of computing high fidelity graphics in real-time has sparked a renewed interest in the development and research of Augmented Reality applications. Within the large spectrum of mixed real and virtual elements one specific area is dedicated to produce realistic augmentations with the aim of presenting virtual copies of real existing objects or soon to be produced products. Surprisingly though, the current state of this area leaves much to be desired: Augmenting objects in current systems are often presented without any reconstructed lighting whatsoever and therefore transfer an impression of being glued over a camera image rather than augmenting reality. In light of the advances in the movie industry, which has handled cases of mixed realities from one extreme end to another, it is a legitimate question to ask why such advances did not fully reflect onto Augmented Reality simulations as well. Generally understood to be real-time applications which reconstruct the spatial relation of real world elements and virtual objects, Augmented Reality has to deal with several uncertainties. Among them, unknown illumination and real scene conditions are the most important. Any kind of reconstruction of real world properties in an ad-hoc manner must likewise be incorporated into an algorithm responsible for shading virtual objects and transferring virtual light to real surfaces in an ad-hoc fashion. The immersiveness of an Augmented Reality simulation is, next to its realism and accuracy, primarily dependent on its responsiveness. Any computation affecting the final image must be computed in real-time. This condition rules out many of the methods used for movie production. The remaining real-time options face three problems: The shading of virtual surfaces under real natural illumination, the relighting of real surfaces according to the change in illumination due to the introduction of a new object into a scene, and the believable global interaction of real and virtual light. This dissertation presents contributions to answer the problems at hand. Current state-of-the-art methods build on Differential Rendering techniques to fuse global illumination algorithms into AR environments. This simple approach has a computationally costly downside, which limits the options for believable light transfer even further. This dissertation explores new shading and relighting algorithms built on a mathematical foundation replacing Differential Rendering. The result not only presents a more efficient competitor to the current state-of-the-art in global illumination relighting, but also advances the field with the ability to simulate effects which have not been demonstrated by contemporary publications until now

    Theory and algorithms for efficient physically-based illumination

    Realistic image synthesis is one of the central fields of study within computer graphics. This thesis treats efficient methods for simulating light transport in situations where the incident illumination is produced by non-pointlike area light sources and distant illumination described by environment maps. We describe novel theory and algorithms for physically-based lighting computations, and expose the design choices and tradeoffs on which the techniques are based. Two publications included in this thesis deal with precomputed light transport. These techniques produce interactive renderings of static scenes under dynamic illumination and full global illumination effects. This is achieved through sacrificing the ability to freely deform and move the objects in the scene. We present a comprehensive mathematical framework for precomputed light transport. The framework, which is given as an abstract operator equation that extends the well-known rendering equation, encompasses a significant amount of prior work as its special cases. We also present a particular method for rendering objects in low-frequency lighting environments, where increased efficiency is gained through the use of compactly supported function bases. Physically-based shadows from area and environmental light sources are an important factor in perceived image realism. We present two algorithms for shadow computation. The first technique computes shadows cast by low-frequency environmental illumination on animated objects at interactive rates without requiring difficult precomputation or a priori knowledge of the animations. Here the capability to animate is gained by forfeiting indirect illumination. Another novel shadow algorithm for off-line rendering significantly enhances a previous physically-based soft shadow technique by introducing an improved spatial hierarchy that alleviates redundant computations at the cost of using more memory. This thesis advances the state of the art in realistic image synthesis by introducing several algorithms that are more efficient than their predecessors. Furthermore, the theoretical contributions should enable the transfer of ideas from one particular application to others through abstract generalization of the underlying mathematical concepts.Tämä tutkimus käsittelee realististen kuvien syntetisointia tietokoneella tilanteissa, jossa virtuaalisen ympäristön valonlähteet ovat fysikaalisesti mielekkäitä. Fysikaalisella mielekkyydellä tarkoitetaan sitä, että valonlähteet eivät ole idealisoituja eli pistemäisiä, vaan joko tavanomaisia pinta-alallisia valoja tai kaukaisia ympäristövalokenttiä (environment maps). Väitöskirjassa esitetään uusia algoritmeja, jotka soveltuvat matemaattisesti perusteltujen valaistusapproksimaatioiden laskentaan erilaisissa käyttötilanteissa. Esilaskettu valonkuljetus on yleisnimi reaaliaikaisille menetelmille, jotka tuottavat kuvia staattisista ympäristöistä siten, että valaistus voi muuttua ajon aikana vapaasti ennalta määrätyissä rajoissa. Tässä työssä esitetään esilasketulle valonkuljetukselle kattava matemaattinen kehys, joka selittää erikoistapauksinaan suuren määrän aiempaa tutkimusta. Kehys annetaan abstraktin lineaarisen operaattoriyhtälön muodossa, ja se yleistää tunnettua kuvanmuodostusyhtälöä (rendering equation). Työssä esitetään myös esilasketun valonkuljetuksen algoritmi, joka parantaa aiempien vastaavien menetelmien tehokkuutta esittämällä valaistuksen funktiokannassa, jonka ominaisuuksien vuoksi ajonaikainen laskenta vähenee huomattavasti. Fysikaalisesti mielekkäät valonlähteet tuottavat pehmeäreunaisia varjoja. Työssä esitetään uusi algoritmi pehmeiden varjojen laskemiseksi liikkuville ja muotoaan muuttaville kappaleille, joita valaisee matalataajuinen ympäristövalokenttä. Useimmista aiemmista menetelmistä poiketen algoritmi ei vaadi esitietoa siitä, kuinka kappale voi muuttaa muotoaan ajon aikana. Muodonmuutoksen aiheuttaman suuren laskentakuorman vuoksi epäsuoraa valaistusta ei huomioida. Työssä esitetään myös toinen uusi algoritmi pehmeiden varjojen laskemiseksi, jossa aiemman varjotilavuuksiin (shadow volumes) perustuvan algoritmin tehokkuutta parannetaan merkittävästi uuden hierarkkisen avaruudellisen hakurakenteen avulla. Uusi rakenne vähentää epäoleellista laskentaa muistinkulutuksen kustannuksella. Työssä esitetään aiempaa tehokkaampia algoritmeja fysikaalisesti perustellun valaistuksen laskentaan. Niiden lisäksi työn esilaskettua valonkuljetusta koskevat teoreettiset tulokset yleistävät suuren joukon aiempaa tutkimusta ja mahdollistavat näin ideoiden siirron erityisalalta toiselle.reviewe

This research introduces the Dobashi method of sky luminance; additionally, Radiosity Caster Culling is applied to the virtual objects as the second thought for outside illumination. Pre-Computed Radiance Transfer is connected to ascertain the division of patches. Moreover, for real sky shading, the Perez model is utilized. By pre-ascertaining sky shading vitality and outside light, the vitality of the entire open air is figured ahead of time. The open air vitality is shared on virtual articles to make the situations more practical.     Dynamic Illumination for Augmented Reality with Real-Time Interaction

    Current augmented and mixed reality systems suffer a lack of correct illumination modeling where the virtual objects render the same lighting condition as the real environment. While we are experiencing astonishing results from the entertainment industry in multiple media forms, the procedure is mostly accomplished offline. The illumination information extracted from the physical scene is used to interactively render the virtual objects which results in a more realistic output in real-time. In this paper, we present a method that detects the physical illumination with dynamic scene, then uses the extracted illumination to render the virtual objects added to the scene. The method has three steps that are assumed to be working concurrently in real-time. The first is the estimation of the direct illumination (incident light) from the physical scene using computer vision techniques through a 360° live-feed camera connected to AR device. The second is the simulation of indirect illumination (reflected light) from the real-world surfaces to virtual objects rendering using region capture of 2D texture from the AR camera view. The third is defining the virtual objects with proper lighting and shadowing characteristics using shader language through multiple passes. Finally, we tested our work with multiple lighting conditions to evaluate the accuracy of results based on the shadow falling from the virtual objects which should be consistent with the shadow falling from the real objects with a reduced performance cost

    Measuring and understanding light in real life scenarios

    Lighting design and modelling (the efficient and aesthetic placement of luminaires in a virtual or real scene) or industrial applications like luminaire planning and commissioning (the luminaire's installation and evaluation process along to the scene's geometry and structure) rely heavily on high realism and physically correct simulations. The current typical approaches are based only on CAD modeling simulations and offline rendering, with long processing times and therefore inflexible workflows. In this thesis we examine whether different camera-aided light modeling and numerical optimization approaches could be used to accurately understand, model and measure the light distribution in real life scenarios within real world environments. We show that factorization techniques could play a semantic role for light decomposition and light source identification, while we contribute a novel benchmark dataset and metrics for it. Thereafter we adapt a well known global illumination model (i.e. radiosity) and we extend it so that to overcome some of its basic limitations related to the assumption of point based only light sources or the adaption of only isotropic light perception sensors. We show that this extended radiosity numerical model can challenge the state-of-the-art in obtaining accurate dense spatial light measurements over time and in different scenarios. Finally we combine the latter model with human-centric sensing information and present how this could be beneficial for smart lighting applications related to quality lighting and power efficiency. Thus, with this work we contribute by setting the baselines for using an RGBD camera input as the only requirement to light modeling methods for light estimation in real life scenarios, and open a new applicability where the illumination modeling can be turned into an interactive process, allowing for real-time modifications and immediate feedback on the spatial illumination of a scene over time towards quality lighting and energy efficient solutions

    Die Erzeugung realistischer Bilder ist ein wichtiges Ziel der Computergrafik, mit Anwendungen u.a. in der Spielfilmindustrie, Architektur und Medizin. Die physikalisch basierte Bildsynthese, welche in letzter Zeit anwendungsübergreifend weiten Anklang findet, bedient sich der numerischen Simulation des Lichttransports entlang durch die geometrische Optik vorgegebener Ausbreitungspfade; ein Modell, welches für übliche Szenen ausreicht, Photorealismus zu erzielen. Insgesamt gesehen ist heute das computergestützte Verfassen von Bildern und Animationen mit wohlgestalteter und theoretisch fundierter Schattierung stark vereinfacht. Allerdings ist bei der praktischen Umsetzung auch die Rücksichtnahme auf Details wie die Struktur des Ausgabegeräts wichtig und z.B. das Teilproblem der effizienten physikalisch basierten Bildsynthese in partizipierenden Medien ist noch weit davon entfernt, als gelöst zu gelten. Weiterhin ist die Bildsynthese als Teil eines weiteren Kontextes zu sehen: der effektiven Kommunikation von Ideen und Informationen. Seien es nun Form und Funktion eines Gebäudes, die medizinische Visualisierung einer Computertomografie oder aber die Stimmung einer Filmsequenz -- Botschaften in Form digitaler Bilder sind heutzutage omnipräsent. Leider hat die Verbreitung der -- auf Simulation ausgelegten -- Methodik der physikalisch basierten Bildsynthese generell zu einem Verlust intuitiver, feingestalteter und lokaler künstlerischer Kontrolle des finalen Bildinhalts geführt, welche in vorherigen, weniger strikten Paradigmen vorhanden war. Die Beiträge dieser Dissertation decken unterschiedliche Aspekte der Bildsynthese ab. Dies sind zunächst einmal die grundlegende Subpixel-Bildsynthese sowie effiziente Bildsyntheseverfahren für partizipierende Medien. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit stehen jedoch Ansätze zum effektiven visuellen Verständnis der Lichtausbreitung, die eine lokale künstlerische Einflussnahme ermöglichen und gleichzeitig auf globaler Ebene konsistente und glaubwürdige Ergebnisse erzielen. Hierbei ist die Kernidee, Visualisierung und Bearbeitung des Lichts direkt im alle möglichen Lichtpfade einschließenden "Pfadraum" durchzuführen. Dies steht im Gegensatz zu Verfahren nach Stand der Forschung, die entweder im Bildraum arbeiten oder auf bestimmte, isolierte Beleuchtungseffekte wie perfekte Spiegelungen, Schatten oder Kaustiken zugeschnitten sind. Die Erprobung der vorgestellten Verfahren hat gezeigt, dass mit ihnen real existierende Probleme der Bilderzeugung für Filmproduktionen gelöst werden können

    Real-time Illumination and Visual Coherence for Photorealistic Augmented/Mixed Reality

    A realistically inserted virtual object in the real-time physical environment is a desirable feature in augmented reality (AR) applications and mixed reality (MR) in general. This problem is considered a vital research area in computer graphics, a field that is experiencing ongoing discovery. The algorithms and methods used to obtain dynamic and real-time illumination measurement, estimating, and rendering of augmented reality scenes are utilized in many applications to achieve a realistic perception by humans. We cannot deny the powerful impact of the continuous development of computer vision and machine learning techniques accompanied by the original computer graphics and image processing methods to provide a significant range of novel AR/MR techniques. These techniques include methods for light source acquisition through image-based lighting or sampling, registering and estimating the lighting conditions, and composition of global illumination. In this review, we discussed the pipeline stages with the details elaborated about the methods and techniques that contributed to the development of providing a photo-realistic rendering, visual coherence, and interactive real-time illumination results in AR/MR

    Illumination Invariant Outdoor Perception

    This thesis proposes the use of a multi-modal sensor approach to achieve illumination invariance in images taken in outdoor environments. The approach is automatic in that it does not require user input for initialisation, and is not reliant on the input of atmospheric radiative transfer models. While it is common to use pixel colour and intensity as features in high level vision algorithms, their performance is severely limited by the uncontrolled lighting and complex geometric structure of outdoor scenes. The appearance of a material is dependent on the incident illumination, which can vary due to spatial and temporal factors. This variability causes identical materials to appear differently depending on their location. Illumination invariant representations of the scene can potentially improve the performance of high level vision algorithms as they allow discrimination between pixels to occur based on the underlying material characteristics. The proposed approach to obtaining illumination invariance utilises fused image and geometric data. An approximation of the outdoor illumination is used to derive per-pixel scaling factors. This has the effect of relighting the entire scene using a single illuminant that is common in terms of colour and intensity for all pixels. The approach is extended to radiometric normalisation and the multi-image scenario, meaning that the resultant dataset is both spatially and temporally illumination invariant. The proposed illumination invariance approach is evaluated on several datasets and shows that spatial and temporal invariance can be achieved without loss of spectral dimensionality. The system requires very few tuning parameters, meaning that expert knowledge is not required in order for its operation. This has potential implications for robotics and remote sensing applications where perception systems play an integral role in developing a rich understanding of the scene
