Development and evaluation of low cost 2-d lidar based traffic data collection methods
Traffic data collection is one of the essential components of a transportation planning exercise. Granular traffic data such as volume count, vehicle classification, speed measurement, and occupancy, allows managing transportation systems more effectively. For effective traffic operation and management, authorities require deploying many sensors across the network. Moreover, the ascending efforts to achieve smart transportation aspects put immense pressure on planning authorities to deploy more sensors to cover an extensive network. This research focuses on the development and evaluation of inexpensive data collection methodology by using two-dimensional (2-D) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. LiDAR is adopted since it is economical and easily accessible technology. Moreover, its 360-degree visibility and accurate distance information make it more reliable.
To collect traffic count data, the proposed method integrates a Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) into a single framework. Proof-of-Concept (POC) test is conducted in three different places in Newark, New Jersey to examine the performance of the proposed method. The POC test results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves acceptable performances, resulting in 83% ~ 94% accuracy. It is discovered that the proposed method\u27s accuracy is affected by the color of the exterior surface of a vehicle since some colored surfaces do not produce enough reflective rays. It is noticed that the blue and black colors are less reflective, while white-colored surfaces produce high reflective rays.
A methodology is proposed that comprises K-means clustering, inverse sensor model, and Kalman filter to obtain trajectories of the vehicles at the intersections. The primary purpose of vehicle detection and tracking is to obtain the turning movement counts at an intersection. A K-means clustering is an unsupervised machine learning technique that clusters the data into different groups by analyzing the smallest mean of a data point from the centroid. The ultimate objective of applying K-mean clustering is to identify the difference between pedestrians and vehicles. An inverse sensor model is a state model of occupancy grid mapping that localizes the detected vehicles on the grid map. A constant velocity model based Kalman filter is defined to track the trajectory of the vehicles. The data are collected from two intersections located in Newark, New Jersey, to study the accuracy of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has an average accuracy of 83.75%. Furthermore, the obtained R-squared value for localization of the vehicles on the grid map is ranging between 0.87 to 0.89.
Furthermore, a primary cost comparison is made to study the cost efficiency of the developed methodology. The cost comparison shows that the proposed methodology based on 2-D LiDAR technology can achieve acceptable accuracy at a low price and be considered a smart city concept to conduct extensive scale data collection
Coronal Mass Ejection Detection using Wavelets, Curvelets and Ridgelets: Applications for Space Weather Monitoring
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions of plasma and
magnetic feld that can produce adverse space weather at Earth and other
locations in the Heliosphere. Due to the intrinsic multiscale nature of
features in coronagraph images, wavelet and multiscale image processing
techniques are well suited to enhancing the visibility of CMEs and supressing
noise. However, wavelets are better suited to identifying point-like features,
such as noise or background stars, than to enhancing the visibility of the
curved form of a typical CME front. Higher order multiscale techniques, such as
ridgelets and curvelets, were therefore explored to characterise the morphology
(width, curvature) and kinematics (position, velocity, acceleration) of CMEs.
Curvelets in particular were found to be well suited to characterising CME
properties in a self-consistent manner. Curvelets are thus likely to be of
benefit to autonomous monitoring of CME properties for space weather

A Multiresolution Census Algorithm for Calculating Vortex Statistics in Turbulent Flows
The fundamental equations that model turbulent flow do not provide much
insight into the size and shape of observed turbulent structures. We
investigate the efficient and accurate representation of structures in
two-dimensional turbulence by applying statistical models directly to the
simulated vorticity field. Rather than extract the coherent portion of the
image from the background variation, as in the classical signal-plus-noise
model, we present a model for individual vortices using the non-decimated
discrete wavelet transform. A template image, supplied by the user, provides
the features to be extracted from the vorticity field. By transforming the
vortex template into the wavelet domain, specific characteristics present in
the template, such as size and symmetry, are broken down into components
associated with spatial frequencies. Multivariate multiple linear regression is
used to fit the vortex template to the vorticity field in the wavelet domain.
Since all levels of the template decomposition may be used to model each level
in the field decomposition, the resulting model need not be identical to the
template. Application to a vortex census algorithm that records quantities of
interest (such as size, peak amplitude, circulation, etc.) as the vorticity
field evolves is given. The multiresolution census algorithm extracts coherent
structures of all shapes and sizes in simulated vorticity fields and is able to
reproduce known physical scaling laws when processing a set of voriticity
fields that evolve over time
Moving Object Tracking Using Symmetric Mask-Based Scheme
[[abstract]]This work presents a new approach, symmetric mask-based scheme (SMBS), for moving object detection and tracking based on the symmetric mask-based discrete wavelet transform (SMDWT). This work presents a fast algorithm, called 2D SMDWT, to improve the critical issue of the 2D lifting-based Discrete Wavelet Transform (LDWT), and then obtains the benefit of low latency, reduced complexity, and low transpose memory for object detection. The successful moving object detection in a real surrounding environment is a difficult task due to noise issues such as fake motion or Gaussian noise. The SMBS approach can effectively reduce noises with low computing cost in both indoor and outdoor environments. Multi-scale Discriminant Saliency with Wavelet-based Hidden Markov Tree Modelling
The bottom-up saliency, an early stage of humans' visual attention, can be
considered as a binary classification problem between centre and surround
classes. Discriminant power of features for the classification is measured as
mutual information between distributions of image features and corresponding
classes . As the estimated discrepancy very much depends on considered scale
level, multi-scale structure and discriminant power are integrated by employing
discrete wavelet features and Hidden Markov Tree (HMT). With wavelet
coefficients and Hidden Markov Tree parameters, quad-tree like label structures
are constructed and utilized in maximum a posterior probability (MAP) of hidden
class variables at corresponding dyadic sub-squares. Then, a saliency value for
each square block at each scale level is computed with discriminant power
principle. Finally, across multiple scales is integrated the final saliency map
by an information maximization rule. Both standard quantitative tools such as
NSS, LCC, AUC and qualitative assessments are used for evaluating the proposed
multi-scale discriminant saliency (MDIS) method against the well-know
information based approach AIM on its released image collection with
eye-tracking data. Simulation results are presented and analysed to verify the
validity of MDIS as well as point out its limitation for further research

Video content analysis for automated detection and tracking of humans in CCTV surveillance applications
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The problems of achieving high detection rate with low false alarm rate for human detection and tracking in video sequence, performance scalability, and improving response time are addressed in this thesis. The underlying causes are the effect of scene complexity, human-to-human interactions, scale changes, and scene background-human interactions. A two-stage processing solution, namely, human detection, and human tracking with two novel pattern classifiers is presented. Scale independent human detection is achieved by processing in the wavelet domain using square wavelet features. These features used to characterise human silhouettes at different scales are similar to rectangular features used in [Viola 2001]. At the detection stage two detectors are combined to improve detection rate. The first detector is based on shape-outline of humans extracted from the scene using a reduced complexity outline extraction algorithm. A Shape mismatch measure is used to differentiate between the human and the background class. The second detector uses rectangular features as primitives for silhouette description in the wavelet domain. The marginal distribution of features collocated at a particular position on a candidate human (a patch of the image) is used to describe statistically the silhouette. Two similarity measures are computed between a candidate human and the model histograms of human and non human classes. The similarity measure is used to discriminate between the human and the non human class. At the tracking stage, a tracker based on joint probabilistic data association filter (JPDAF) for data association, and motion correspondence is presented. Track clustering is used to reduce hypothesis enumeration complexity. Towards improving response time with increase in frame dimension, scene complexity, and number of channels; a scalable algorithmic architecture and operating accuracy prediction technique is presented. A scheduling strategy for improving the response time and throughput by parallel processing is also presented
