    “Time Is Not Real”: Revitalizing Vintage Recording Techniques for the Here and Now

    This project aims to revitalize vintage recording techniques in the contemporary hybrid model of music production. Modern popular music has become increasingly electronic. While the current trend is to do everything “in the box”, this project seeks to find the best balance between analog and digital. Two full length albums will be recorded and mixed focusing on blending old and new. The coloration of tape machines, analog consoles, and vintage outboard gear will collide with modern immersive audio techniques and digital editing within ProTools and Ableton Live. The first album is a 13 song collection of jazz fusion compositions performed live in studio with the MarcO Poingt Trio and was recorded on a vintage Neve console. The second album is a 9 song psychedelic rock odyssey under the name Cloudgazer, which was initially mixed in the box but finalized through a 24 track tape machine, SSL console, and various hardware compressors. The author performed on, engineered, and mixed both albums and also produced one music video to accompany one song on the Cloudgazer album.     Design and real time implementation of nonlinear minimum variance filter

    In this paper, the design and real time implementation of a Nonlinear Minimum Variance (NMV) estimator is presented using a laboratory based ball and beam system. The real time implementation employs a LabVIEW based tool. The novelty of this work lies in the design steps and the practical implementation of the NMV estimation technique which up till now only investigated using simulation studies. The paper also discusses the advantages and limitations of the NMV estimator based on the real time application results. These are compared with results obtained using an extended Kalman filter

    Is the Universe anisotropic right now? Comparing the real Universe with the Kasner's space-time

    We investigate possible astronomical manifestations of space-time anisotropy. The homogeneous vacuum Kasner solution was chosen as a reference anisotropic cosmological model because there are no effects caused by inhomogeneity in this simple model with a constant degree of anisotropy. This anisotropy cannot become weak. The study of its geodesic structure made it possible to clarify the properties of this space-time. It showed that the degree of manifestation of anisotropy varies significantly depending on the travel time of the light from the observed object. For nearby objects, for which it does not exceed half the age of the universe, the manifestations of anisotropy are very small. Distant objects show more pronounced manifestations, for example, in the distribution of objects over the sky and over photometric distances. These effects for each of the individual objects decrease with time, but in general, the manifestations of anisotropy in the Kasner space-time remain constant due to the fact that new sources emerging from beyond the cosmological horizon.We analyse observable signatures of the Kasner-type anisotropy and compare it to observations. These effects were not found in astronomical observations, including the study of the CMB. We can assume that the Universe has always been isotropic or almost isotropic since the recombination era. This does not exclude the possibility of its significant anisotropy at the moment of the Big Bang followed by rapid isotropization during the inflationary epoch.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure

In the United States, a newly elected President and a Congress presumably controlled by the Democratic Party will assume power in 2009. These political developments bring with them the potential for change in U.S. - Cuba relations. Opportunities are available even today for U.S. investment in the Cuban real estate market. This thesis identifies why now is the right time for Americans to move forward with their investment plans. It explains how real estate transactions are currently being conducted on the island and the challenges of investing in Cuban real estate according to Cubans and foreign investors.     A Macroscopic Mathematical Model For Cell Migration Assays Using A Real-Time Cell Analysis

    Experiments of cell migration and chemotaxis assays have been classically performed in the so-called Boyden Chambers. A recent technology, xCELLigence Real Time Cell Analysis, is now allowing to monitor the cell migration in real time. This technology measures impedance changes caused by the gradual increase of electrode surface occupation by cells during the course of time and provide a Cell Index which is proportional to cellular morphology, spreading, ruffling and adhesion quality as well as cell number. In this paper we propose a macroscopic mathematical model, based on \emph{advection-reaction-diffusion} partial differential equations, describing the cell migration assay using the real-time technology. We carried out numerical simulations to compare simulated model dynamics with data of observed biological experiments on three different cell lines and in two experimental settings: absence of chemotactic signals (basal migration) and presence of a chemoattractant. Overall we conclude that our minimal mathematical model is able to describe the phenomenon in the real time scale and numerical results show a good agreement with the experimental evidences

    Using aircraft location data to estimate current economic activity

    Aviation is a key sector of the economy, contributing at least 3% to gross domestic product (GDP) in the UK and the US. Currently, airline performance statistics are published with a three month delay. However, aircraft now broadcast their location in real-time using the Automated Dependent Surveillance Broadcast system (ADS-B). In this paper, we analyse a global dataset of flights since July 2016. We first show that it is possible to accurately estimate airline flight volumes using ADS-B data, which is available immediately. Next, we demonstrate that real-time knowledge of flight volumes can be a leading indicator for aviation’s direct contribution to GDP in both the UK and the US. Using ADS-B data could therefore help move us towards real-time estimates of GDP, which would equip policymakers with the information to respond to shocks more quickly

    Nonperturbative calculation of the shear viscosity in hot phi**4 theory in real time

    Starting from the Kubo formula we calculate the shear viscosity in hot phi**4 theory nonperturbatively by resumming ladders with a real-time version of the Bethe-Salpeter equation at finite temperature. In the weak coupling limit, the generalized Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem is shown to decouple the Bethe-Salpeter equations for the different real-time components of the 4-point function. The resulting scalar integral equation is identical with the one obtained by Jeon using diagrammatic ``cutting rules'' in the Imaginary Time Formalism.Comment: 4 pages LateX.     Fast radio bursts: recent discoveries and future prospects

    Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are quickly becoming a subject of intense interest in time-domain astronomy. The progenitors of FRBs remain unknown but a wide variety of models exist from cataclysmic to repeating scenarios. Advances in FRB detection using current and next-generation radio telescopes will enable the growth of the population in the next few years. Real-time discovery of FRBs is now possible with 6 sources detected in real-time within the past 2 years at the Parkes telescope. Here we discuss the developing strategies for maximising real-time science with FRBs including polarisation capture and multi-wavelength follow-up, with particular focus on real-time detections with the Parkes telescope as a test bed for fast radio burst science.
