A survey of comics research in computer science
Graphical novels such as comics and mangas are well known all over the world.
The digital transition started to change the way people are reading comics,
more and more on smartphones and tablets and less and less on paper. In the
recent years, a wide variety of research about comics has been proposed and
might change the way comics are created, distributed and read in future years.
Early work focuses on low level document image analysis: indeed comic books are
complex, they contains text, drawings, balloon, panels, onomatopoeia, etc.
Different fields of computer science covered research about user interaction
and content generation such as multimedia, artificial intelligence,
human-computer interaction, etc. with different sets of values. We propose in
this paper to review the previous research about comics in computer science, to
state what have been done and to give some insights about the main outlooks
3D modeling of indoor environments by a mobile platform with a laser scanner and panoramic camera
One major challenge of 3DTV is content acquisition. Here, we present a method to acquire a realistic, visually convincing D model of indoor environments based on a mobile platform that is equipped with a laser range scanner and a panoramic camera. The data of the 2D laser scans are used to solve the simultaneous lo- calization and mapping problem and to extract walls. Textures for walls and floor are built from the images of a calibrated panoramic camera. Multiresolution blending is used to hide seams in the gen- erated textures. The scene is further enriched by 3D-geometry cal- culated from a graph cut stereo technique. We present experimental results from a moderately large real environment.
Spontaneous Subtle Expression Detection and Recognition based on Facial Strain
Optical strain is an extension of optical flow that is capable of quantifying
subtle changes on faces and representing the minute facial motion intensities
at the pixel level. This is computationally essential for the relatively new
field of spontaneous micro-expression, where subtle expressions can be
technically challenging to pinpoint. In this paper, we present a novel method
for detecting and recognizing micro-expressions by utilizing facial optical
strain magnitudes to construct optical strain features and optical strain
weighted features. The two sets of features are then concatenated to form the
resultant feature histogram. Experiments were performed on the CASME II and
SMIC databases. We demonstrate on both databases, the usefulness of optical
strain information and more importantly, that our best approaches are able to
outperform the original baseline results for both detection and recognition
tasks. A comparison of the proposed method with other existing spatio-temporal

Shallow Triple Stream Three-dimensional CNN (STSTNet) for Micro-expression Recognition
In the recent year, state-of-the-art for facial micro-expression recognition
have been significantly advanced by deep neural networks. The robustness of
deep learning has yielded promising performance beyond that of traditional
handcrafted approaches. Most works in literature emphasized on increasing the
depth of networks and employing highly complex objective functions to learn
more features. In this paper, we design a Shallow Triple Stream
Three-dimensional CNN (STSTNet) that is computationally light whilst capable of
extracting discriminative high level features and details of micro-expressions.
The network learns from three optical flow features (i.e., optical strain,
horizontal and vertical optical flow fields) computed based on the onset and
apex frames of each video. Our experimental results demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed STSTNet, which obtained an unweighted average
recall rate of 0.7605 and unweighted F1-score of 0.7353 on the composite
database consisting of 442 samples from the SMIC, CASME II and SAMM databases.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, Accepted and published in IEEE FG 201
A survey of visual preprocessing and shape representation techniques
Many recent theories and methods proposed for visual preprocessing and shape representation are summarized. The survey brings together research from the fields of biology, psychology, computer science, electrical engineering, and most recently, neural networks. It was motivated by the need to preprocess images for a sparse distributed memory (SDM), but the techniques presented may also prove useful for applying other associative memories to visual pattern recognition. The material of this survey is divided into three sections: an overview of biological visual processing; methods of preprocessing (extracting parts of shape, texture, motion, and depth); and shape representation and recognition (form invariance, primitives and structural descriptions, and theories of attention)
Taking the bite out of automated naming of characters in TV video
We investigate the problem of automatically labelling appearances of characters in TV or film material
with their names. This is tremendously challenging due to the huge variation in imaged appearance of each character and the weakness and ambiguity of available annotation. However, we demonstrate that high precision can be achieved by combining multiple sources of information, both visual and textual. The principal novelties that we introduce are: (i) automatic generation of time stamped character annotation by aligning subtitles and transcripts; (ii) strengthening the supervisory information by identifying
when characters are speaking. In addition, we incorporate complementary cues of face matching and clothing matching to propose common annotations for face tracks, and consider choices of classifier which can potentially correct errors made in the automatic extraction of training data from the weak textual annotation.
