    Health-related websites provide valuable information, resources, and support for individuals seeking to improve their health and make informed decisions about their well-being. Graphical content makes websites visually appealing and helps create a positive first impression. Relevant and high-quality graphical content can immediately capture visitors attention and make the website more attractive and memorable. However, irrelevant graphical content on web pages also indicates poor readability, distracting readers from the texts focus. This papers primary objective is to assess the effect of irrelevant or low-quality graphical content on the readability of a health-related website. The relevance of graphical content on a website was computed using a tool proposed in our previous research. A user study comprised of end-user evaluation and heuristic evaluation by readability experts was conducted using a variety of question categories. Both evaluation methods yielded comparable results, confirming that the pertinent graphical content enhances the readability of the web page

    Computer vision reading on stickers and direct part marking on horticultural products : challenges and possible solutions

    Traceability of products from production to the consumer has led to a technological advancement in product identification. There has been development from the use of traditional one-dimensional barcodes (EAN-13, Code 128, etc.) to 2D (two-dimensional) barcodes such as QR (Quick Response) and Data Matrix codes. Over the last two decades there has been an increased use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Direct Part Marking (DPM) using lasers for product identification in agriculture. However, in agriculture there are still considerable challenges to adopting barcodes, RFID and DPM technologies, unlike in industry where these technologies have been very successful. This study was divided into three main objectives. Firstly, determination of the effect of speed, dirt, moisture and bar width on barcode detection was carried out both in the laboratory and a flower producing company, Brandkamp GmbH. This study developed algorithms for automation and detection of Code 128 barcodes under rough production conditions. Secondly, investigations were carried out on the effect of low laser marking energy on barcode size, print growth, colour and contrast on decoding 2D Data Matrix codes printed directly on apples. Three different apple varieties (Golden Delicious, Kanzi and Red Jonaprince) were marked with various levels of energy and different barcode sizes. Image processing using Halcon 11.0.1 (MvTec) was used to evaluate the markings on the apples. Finally, the third objective was to evaluate both algorithms for 1D and 2D barcodes. According to the results, increasing the speed and angle of inclination of the barcode decreased barcode recognition. Also, increasing the dirt on the surface of the barcode resulted in decreasing the successful detection of those barcodes. However, there was 100% detection of the Code 128 barcode at the company’s production speed (0.15 m/s) with the proposed algorithm. Overall, the results from the company showed that the image-based system has a future prospect for automation in horticultural production systems. It overcomes the problem of using laser barcode readers. The results for apples showed that laser energy, barcode size, print growth, type of product, contrast between the markings and the colour of the products, the inertia of the laser system and the days of storage all singularly or in combination with each other influence the readability of laser Data Matrix codes and implementation on apples. There was poor detection of the Data Matrix code on Kanzi and Red Jonaprince due to the poor contrast between the markings on their skins. The proposed algorithm is currently working successfully on Golden Delicious with 100% detection for 10 days using energy 0.108 J mm-2 and a barcode size of 10 × 10 mm2. This shows that there is a future prospect of not only marking barcodes on apples but also on other agricultural products for real time production

    Patch-based methods for variational image processing problems

    Image Processing problems are notoriously difficult. To name a few of these difficulties, they are usually ill-posed, involve a huge number of unknowns (from one to several per pixel!), and images cannot be considered as the linear superposition of a few physical sources as they contain many different scales and non-linearities. However, if one considers instead of images as a whole small blocks (or patches) inside the pictures, many of these hurdles vanish and problems become much easier to solve, at the cost of increasing again the dimensionality of the data to process. Following the seminal NL-means algorithm in 2005-2006, methods that consider only the visual correlation between patches and ignore their spatial relationship are called non-local methods. While powerful, it is an arduous task to define non-local methods without using heuristic formulations or complex mathematical frameworks. On the other hand, another powerful property has brought global image processing algorithms one step further: it is the sparsity of images in well chosen representation basis. However, this property is difficult to embed naturally in non-local methods, yielding algorithms that are usually inefficient or circonvoluted. In this thesis, we explore alternative approaches to non-locality, with the goals of i) developing universal approaches that can handle local and non-local constraints and ii) leveraging the qualities of both non-locality and sparsity. For the first point, we will see that embedding the patches of an image into a graph-based framework can yield a simple algorithm that can switch from local to non-local diffusion, which we will apply to the problem of large area image inpainting. For the second point, we will first study a fast patch preselection process that is able to group patches according to their visual content. This preselection operator will then serve as input to a social sparsity enforcing operator that will create sparse groups of jointly sparse patches, thus exploiting all the redundancies present in the data, in a simple mathematical framework. Finally, we will study the problem of reconstructing plausible patches from a few binarized measurements. We will show that this task can be achieved in the case of popular binarized image keypoints descriptors, thus demonstrating a potential privacy issue in mobile visual recognition applications, but also opening a promising way to the design and the construction of a new generation of smart cameras

    Video Filtering Using Separable Four-Dimensional Nonlocal Spatiotemporal Transforms

    The large number of practical application involving digital videos has motivated a significant interest in restoration or enhancement solutions to improve the visual quality under the presence of noise. We propose a powerful video denoising algorithm that exploits temporal and spatial redundancy characterizing natural video sequences to reduce the effects of noise. The algorithm implements the paradigm of nonlocal grouping and collaborative filtering, where a four-dimensional transform- domain representation is leveraged to enforce sparsity and thus regularize the data. Moreover we present an extension of our algorithm that can be effectively used as a deblocking and deringing filter to reduce the artifacts introduced by most of the popular video compression techniques. Our algorithm, termed V-BM4D, at first constructs three-dimensional volumes, by tracking blocks along trajectories defined by the motion vectors, and then groups together mutually similar volumes by stacking them along an additional fourth dimension. Each group is transformed through a decorrelating four-dimensional separable transform, and then it is collaboratively filtered by coeffcients shrinkage. The effectiveness of shrinkage is due to the sparse representation of the transformed group. Sparsity is achieved because of different type of correlation among the groups: local correlation along the two dimensions of the blocks, temporal correlation along the motion trajectories, and nonlocal spatial correlation along the fourth dimension. As a conclusive step, the different estimates of the filtered groups are adaptively aggregated and subsequently returned to their original position, to produce a final estimate of the original video. The proposed filtering procedure leads to excellent results in both objective and subjective visual quality, since in the restored video sequences the effect of the noise or of the compression artifacts is noticeably reduced, while the significant features are preserved. As demonstrated by experimental results, V-BM4D outperforms the state of the art in video denoising. /Kir1

    The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively.
