We are interested in controller synthesis for complex tasks defined over belief spaces. Designing such controllers is challenging due to computational complexity and the lack of expressivity of existing specification languages. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic extension to signal temporal logic (STL) that expresses tasks over continuous belief spaces. We present an efficient synthesis algorithm to find a control input that maximises the probability of satisfying a given task.     Strategy Synthesis for Autonomous Agents Using PRISM

    We present probabilistic models for autonomous agent search and retrieve missions derived from Simulink models for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and show how probabilistic model checking and the probabilistic model checker PRISM can be used for optimal controller generation. We introduce a sequence of scenarios relevant to UAVs and other autonomous agents such as underwater and ground vehicles. For each scenario we demonstrate how it can be modelled using the PRISM language, give model checking statistics and present the synthesised optimal controllers. We conclude with a discussion of the limitations when using probabilistic model checking and PRISM in this context and what steps can be taken to overcome them. In addition, we consider how the controllers can be returned to the UAV and adapted for use on larger search areas

    MORPH: A Reference Architecture for Configuration and Behaviour Self-Adaptation

    An architectural approach to self-adaptive systems involves runtime change of system configuration (i.e., the system's components, their bindings and operational parameters) and behaviour update (i.e., component orchestration). Thus, dynamic reconfiguration and discrete event control theory are at the heart of architectural adaptation. Although controlling configuration and behaviour at runtime has been discussed and applied to architectural adaptation, architectures for self-adaptive systems often compound these two aspects reducing the potential for adaptability.     Provably-Correct Task Planning for Autonomous Outdoor Robots

    Autonomous outdoor robots should be able to accomplish complex tasks safely and reliably while considering constraints that arise from both the environment and the physical platform. Such tasks extend basic navigation capabilities to specify a sequence of events over time. For example, an autonomous aerial vehicle can be given a surveillance task with contingency plans while complying with rules in regulated airspace, or an autonomous ground robot may need to guarantee a given probability of success while searching for the quickest way to complete the mission. A promising approach for the automatic synthesis of trusted controllers for complex tasks is to employ techniques from formal methods. In formal methods, tasks are formally specified symbolically with temporal logic. The robot then synthesises a controller automatically to execute trusted behaviour that guarantees the satisfaction of specified tasks and regulations. However, a difficulty arises from the lack of expressivity, which means the constraints affecting outdoor robots cannot be specified naturally with temporal logic. The goal of this thesis is to extend the capabilities of formal methods to express the constraints that arise from outdoor applications and synthesise provably-correct controllers with trusted behaviours over time. This thesis focuses on two important types of constraints, resource and safety constraints, and presents three novel algorithms that express tasks with these constraints and synthesise controllers that satisfy the specification. Firstly, this thesis proposes an extension to probabilistic computation tree logic (PCTL) called resource threshold PCTL (RT-PCTL) that naturally defines the mission specification with continuous resource threshold constraints; furthermore, it synthesises an optimal control policy with respect to the probability of success. With RT-PCTL, a state with accumulated resource out of the specified bound is considered to be failed or saturated depending on the specification. The requirements on resource bounds are naturally encoded in the symbolic specification, followed by the automatic synthesis of an optimal controller with respect to the probability of success. Secondly, the thesis proposes an online algorithm called greedy Buchi algorithm (GBA) that reduces the synthesis problem size to avoid the scalability problem. A framework is then presented with realistic control dynamics and physical assumptions in the environment such as wind estimation and fuel constraints. The time and space complexity for the framework is polynomial in the size of the system state, which is efficient for online synthesis. Lastly, the thesis proposes a synthesis algorithm for an optimal controller with respect to completion time given the minimum safety constraints. The algorithm naturally balances between completion time and safety. This work proves an analytical relationship between the probability of success and the conditional completion time given the mission specification. The theoretical contributions in this thesis are validated through realistic simulation examples. This thesis identifies and solves two core problems that contribute to the overall vision of developing a theoretical basis for trusted behaviour in outdoor robots. These contributions serve as a foundation for further research in multi-constrained task planning where a number of different constraints are considered simultaneously within a single framework

We provide a novel approach,particularly suited for tasks specifications with universallyquantified locations, that has constant time with respect tothenumber of locations, enabling synthesis of plans for an arbitrarynumber of them. We propose a hybrid control framework thatuses an iterator to manage the discretised workspace hidingitfrom a plan enacted by a discrete event controller. A downsideof our approach is that it incurs in increased overhead whenexecuting a synthesised plan. We demonstrate that the overheadis reasonable for missions of a fixed-wing Unmanned AerialVehicle in simulated and real scenarios for up to700 000locations

    Unified devs-based platform for modelling and simulation of hybrid control systems

    Recent robotic research has led to different architectural approaches that support enactment of automatically synthesized discrete event controllers from user specifications over low-level continuous variable controllers. Simulation of these hybrid control approaches to robotics can be a useful validation tool for robot users and architecture designers, but presents the key challenge of working with discrete and continuous representations of the robot, its environment and its mission plans. In this work we address this challenge showcasing a unified DEVS-based hybrid simulation platform. We model and simulate the hybrid robotic software architecture of a fixed-wing UAV, including the full stack of controllers involved: discrete, hybrid and continuous. We validate the approach experimentally on a typical UAV mapping mission and show that with our unified approach we are able to achieve simulation speed-ups up to one order of magnitude above our previous Software In The Loop simulation setup

    Quadrotor control for persistent surveillance of dynamic environments

    Thesis (M.S.)--Boston UniversityThe last decade has witnessed many advances in the field of small scale unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In particular, the quadrotor has attracted significant attention. Due to its ability to perform vertical takeoff and landing, and to operate in cluttered spaces, the quadrotor is utilized in numerous practical applications, such as reconnaissance and information gathering in unsafe or otherwise unreachable environments. This work considers the application of aerial surveillance over a city-like environment. The thesis presents a framework for automatic deployment of quadrotors to monitor and react to dynamically changing events. The framework has a hierarchical structure. At the top level, the UAVs perform complex behaviors that satisfy high- level mission specifications. At the bottom level, low-level controllers drive actuators on vehicles to perform the desired maneuvers. In parallel with the development of controllers, this work covers the implementation of the system into an experimental testbed. The testbed emulates a city using physical objects to represent static features and projectors to display dynamic events occurring on the ground as seen by an aerial vehicle. The experimental platform features a motion capture system that provides position data for UAVs and physical features of the environment, allowing for precise, closed-loop control of the vehicles. Experimental runs in the testbed are used to validate the effectiveness of the developed control strategies
